First aid kits are located on the wall of the kitchen in the Large Hall behind the church and in the choir vestry. People needing wheelchair access can enter St Paul s most conveniently by the door at the base of the belltower. Name badges help make St Paul s an inclusive community. If you need a new name badge, fill in the form inside the pew sheet, send it to the parish office, and one will be made and left in church for you. Please turn your mobile phone off or on to silent before the service starts. It ll save you much embarrassment later on. Toilets are available at the entrance to the parish hall, which is located behind the church. Ask a member of the clergy or anyone who s wearing a name badge. We re here to help. Children are welcome in church at any service. There is a selection of children s books and toys at the back of the church near the font and there are also kids activity sheets and pencils available at the back of the church where the pew sheets and prayer books are. Children s Church runs during Term Time. Meet at the back of the church at the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist. Please feel free to bring your children to the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to receive Communion if they have been admitted to the sacrament. As you take your place in your pew, please make yourself aware of the route to the nearest emergency exit. Should there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right, and assemble by the roundabout on Burwood Road. Please do not take photos inside the church or during the services of worship without permission.

The weather report for the bus trip on Friday 28th October predicted rain, if this occurred it would be the first time of the thirteen trips we have been on. Our prayers were answered when it dawned overcast on the morning, but no rain. 32 travellers gathered in Burwood Road opposite the church ready to depart at 8.45am. The trip from Burwood to the M4 was slow and became even slower as we joined it. The predicted one hour and forty minutes trip to the Hydro Majestic, Medlow Bath by 11am was looking grim. Luckily once we had passed Parramatta the traffic thinned out and we made good time arriving by 10.40am. Here we met our 33rd tripper who was travelling independently. Our guide for the tour of the Hydro was very knowledgeable and able to answer any questions thrown at him. We moved slowly through the one kilometre long building corridors, hearing about the history and wonderful restoration. The tour ended in the new section, which had a live hanging wall garden and panoramic pictures on the ceiling. This is used as a bar, and for functions. We moved onto the Pavilion, which is a café, shop and museum. This was full of lots of interesting historic artifacts from the original Hotel. The beautiful view over the Megalong Valley, which the Hydro is renowned for was covered in mountain mist, so anyone hoping to see the view will have to return on a fine day. Everyone was impressed by the grandeur and how much forethought Mark Foy had in his visions. The next stop was Leura. Our paper bag lunch was taken in the hall of the Uniting Church. The church, which is attached to the hall, is small but well designed for easy participation in their services. After lunch people could visit the beautifully restored St Alban s Anglican Church, the Teapot Museum and shop or wander down The

Mall and enjoy the quaintness of the village. The famous lolly shop was very popular. Everything was within easy walking distance and the freedom to do their own thing was very much enjoyed. The trip home was less stressful with no major holdups. This was another successful trip despite some organisational headaches, which was all worth the trouble. Thank you to everyone who came to make it the success it was and to the sandwich makers, sweet delicacy bakers, raffle seller and to all who pitched in and helped when needed. A special thank you to Father James for his support at all times. Watch this space for the next trip in March Pam Brock

The tickets will be on sale shortly for the Christmas raffle. The main prize will be a wonderful Christmas hamper. Could we have donations of Christmas fair to fill it with? Suggestions - plum puddings, biscuits, canned fruit, Cranberry sauce, Christmas decorations, smoked oysters, serviettes, anything you might like to use at Christmas. The tickets will be $2 each or 3 for $5. Please place these in the washing basket which will be at the back of the church at each service or give to Pam or leave at the Church Office and mark for Christmas Hamper. Dear Fr James and friends at St Pauls, Our first destination in South America was Peru. We stayed briefly in the capital, Lima, before flying to Cusco. In the mountains around Cusco are many centuries old ruins from the time of the Incas. The Incas were amazing stone masons and built extensive stone cities in many places. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived they set about demolishing as much as possible but they built their churches and other buildings on the Incan foundations, so there is still much Incan stone work to see. Machu Picchu is the finest of the Incan ruins as well as being in a spectacular mountain setting. We then travelled to Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world ( and one of the largest). Here we were introduced to the people of the Uros Islands. These islands are made by the people, entirely of reeds, which they harvest from around the lake. The islands float but the Uros people tether them so they remain in one place. The next day, we crossed the border into Bolivia and visited the Bolivian section of the lake by hydrofoil. We also spent some time in the mountainous capital of La Paz. We are now in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro. Our hotel is across the road from Copacabana Beach which must be one of the most beautiful locations in the world. Yesterday we visited the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer as well as the modern cathedral in Rio. Love and best wishes, Elizabeth

We have had another cushion completed for the Chapel of our Lady. It will not be long before all 6 are in place. Would you like to donate a kneeler as a thank offering to God or in memory of someone or to dedicate one to someone? These kneelers are $175 each and you can make them yourself or we can ask someone to make one for you. We have many people who are looking forward to working some more kneelers. Collection given at St Paul s on Sunday 30th of October: $1855 Other collection given: New Life Centre Nepal: $20 Parish Pantry - $20 Heritage Appeal: $100 Votive Candles: $72 TOTAL: $2067 Thank you for responding to God s generous love. If you would like to order one just speak to Rosemary. Thank you to those of you who make such very generous donations to the Parish Pantry each week but as Fr James tells us the need keeps growing. Currently the urgent need is for Up & Go and chunky tins of food. Foods always needed are: coffee, tinned ham, spam, cereal, Up and Go & full cream milk. tins of chunky soups, pasta, tins of tuna, spreads and sweet biscuits. We also seem to get through a lot of safety razors. Currently we are also in need of toothbrushes and toothpaste. If you are able to contribute any of the above items it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Dear Fr Collins, Please accept these flowers to place in your church they are in memory of my cousin Neil Bryce Crawford. Him & his mother Daisy are in the Columbarium walls in the church grounds (Block J, Row G, Niche 2 & 3). You may remember myself and Kensi visited in June. Sad but happy memories of Neil Bryce Crawford from his cousin Eunice & 2nd cousin Kensi. Thank you so much. On Sunday 13th November we will be asking each of you to fill out the National Church Life Survey. This survey gives important information about church attendance across the country. From it can be plotted trends such as movements between denominations, referred to as denominational switching, which age groups attend the different types of services and which churches are growing and which are declining. All this information and much more is used to build up a picture of the religious landscape of Australia from a Christian perspective. This information is used by the churches themselves to help address issues pertinent to their respective parishes. It also fullfils a wider use when combined with data from other sources to further the academic understanding of Australia and its religious landscape, particularly noting areas affected by immigration and changes in economic growth. So please come along on the 13th November prepared to take 15 minutes during the service to fill out this survey. So that the service does not take any longer than usual there will be no sermon and we will use that time to fill out the survey. Please don't miss this opportunity to help in this very important collection of data. Please bring a pen.

For our young people in the parish, for those who are facing exams and their results and what is means for their future. Every year Head students at schools across Sydney give their farewell speeches that look back on the past and look to the future, They say all types of clever and aeseteric things and occasionally are very wise as is this message from the Head Prefect, Lorane Gaborit, from Queenwood School in Mosman People often ask me what advice I would give my younger self if I were ever to cross paths with her. Most of the time I d tell her to stop worrying about how she looks, how good her grades are, and about what other people think of her. But that s easier said than done. Among young women in particular the pressure to be perfect, to live up to the expectations and standards of others, pervades our culture and society. I d argue that perfectionism affects every single person whether they like to admit it or not, or even whether they are aware of it or not. Simply ask your netballers and soccer players why they can t help but say sorry every time they miss the shot at goal, in spite of the goals they do score and their commitment to the team. Ask the girls who were disappointed they were not receiving an award tonight, forgetting all to quickly their hard work and dedication throughout the rest of the year. Ask the family members in the audience who have to balance work and parenthood on a daily basis, but never show the signs of how hard it is,

even though they d like to. Or maybe ask the year 12s, seen madly studying in the library for months, why they still told everybody the day before their exam that they were definitely going to fail. Were you just being modest? Or did you genuinely believe that failure would be the only alternative to not receiving full marks. More importantly, did you ever want to get full marks? Or was it just what you thought was expected of you, something that would impress your peers, your parents and your teachers. Lastly, ask me. Ask me why I can t help but finish my sentences with the words I don t know or does that make sense? in case I m wrong, or why I spend way to much time writing and rewriting this speech, even though the first draft was probably fine. Ask me why, even though I m older and wiser than my younger self, I still care just as much about how I look, how good my grades are, and what other people think. Too often we stop ourselves from contributing, because we are afraid of the judgement or the reaction of our peers. We spend hours overworking things, because something might not seem quite right to us, even though no one else seems to notice. But does that really make us perfect? It s true that we are praised when we do well. Applauded for our successes at events not too different from this one, and constantly exposed to individuals who seem to have it all under control, whether it be in the media or in our own lives. But in striving to be perfect, what we are really doing is restricting ourselves from something much greater. Imperfection isn t just another word for weakness, or failure. To me it means strength, and it certainly doesn t exclude being hardworking, loyal and caring and following the values of truth, courage and service. It can be dangerous to define yourself by your successes or how well you

live up to the standards you think you are expected to meet, because the reality is so much more complicated and fulfilling than a tangible title, certificate or compliment. Your mindset and actions speak much louder than your achievements ever could. But knowing all of this, like I said, is easier said than done. So tonight I d like to set you all a challenge, the same challenge I wish I had been given when I was eleven, or even this time last year. I d like to challenge you all to learn to say It s good enough, and never to be ashamed of working hard. I d like to challenge you to stop starting sentences with this is probably wrong and to never apologise for asking questions. I d like to challenge you to find the bravery it takes to stop being afraid of failing or falling short of other people s expectations, without ever compromising on your own. And I d like to challenge you all to prioritise whatever makes you happy, over whatever you feel pressured to be or to do, because even if your achievement looks good to the world, if it doesn t feel good in your heart it isn t really an achievement at all. And finally, to the people who ask me what advice I d give my younger self, this is something that I now tell myself every single day. Strive for the stars. But make sure they are the stars you actually want to reach, and not just the ones that other people say are bright. Make sure they are the stars that make you, the unaltered, unique, and imperfect you, shine. And make sure you remember to enjoy the richness of all that you experience on your way there, the place you have come from, and the people that surround you no matter how you look, how good your grades are, or what other people think of you.

[ACNS, by Gavin Drake] Australia s faith communities should be allowed to help settle and provide care for those asylum seekers still being held in offshore detention centres on Nauru and Manus Island, the National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA) has said. The Bishop of Oodthenong in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, Philip Huggins, is the president of the NCCA. In a joint statement with NCCA general secretary, Sister Elizabeth Delaney, he said this week: Hospitality and compassion are shared core values of the major world religions, notwithstanding our many mistakes and failures. We are writing to the Prime Minister and Minister of Immigration and Border Protection, asking that they meet us so we can clarify how together we can co- operate to settle and care for these people. The continuing reports out of both places are a source of deep concern. Plainly, it has not been possible to find a third country able to resettle them. The worsening situation in Syria has made this impossible. The pair hope to convene a meeting with other faith leaders and leaders from Christian overseas and domestic aid and welfare organisations, with the prime minister and government officials to work out how the faith communities can assist. We have considerable expertise and good will which we can bring to this task, they said. We understand and share the Government s concern about people-traffickers. However, the need to resettle in Australia those refugees on Nauru and Manus outweighs and must now be separated from other considerations. We hope and pray our Government will partner with us to resettle these people and thus promote both their healing and ours.

Offertory Envelopes for the next 12 months are available today from the back of the Church and come into use from NEXT SUNDAY, 6th November. The use of Offertory Envelopes is a systematic means of giving to the work of the Church week by week (even when not present on a particular Sunday) so if you wish please collect a new Set of Envelopes as you leave today. If everyone gave electronically it would mean that the Parish would further benefit by receiving giving each week from every person rather than only receiving giving when each person can physically put their financial gift into the collection bag. Why not give it a go? The bank details are: Account name: St Pauls Anglican Church BSB number: Account number: Reference: e.g. offertory, kneelers, parish pantry, choir, organ, church building, etc.. Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these or a similar form of words: "I bequeath the sum of $... to the Rector and Wardens of the Anglican Parish of St Paul s, Burwood, to be used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the parish."

Anointing of the Sick is available at any of our Services. In James 5: we read: 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. (NRSV) If you would like to be anointed and to be prayed for then please ask one of the Priests in the Parish so that you can be anointed during any of our Services. 24 Haggai 1.15b-2.9; Psalm , or Psalm 98; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17; Luke 20:27-40 The older Israelites who had returned from the Exile in ancient Babylon remembered the glory of Solomon s temple, incomparable in splendour to that crafted under the younger Zerubbabel. This is echoed by the Psalmist who wrote: one generation will declare your works to the next. Our families and churches should be places where all ages share with one another the works of God in their lives, for while families can be close, God is closer and he is always near to all who call upon him. Thank God that he is righteous in all his ways and gracious in all his acts. Pray that God will hear the cries of the helpless, raise up the oppressed and guard all who love him. Give thanks for the work of VIMROD the Visayas Mindanao Regional Office for Development of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, the Philippine Independent Church.
