What would have happened if it had been three wise women instead of three wise men whom visited Jesus? They would have asked directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and brought practical gifts. Although this hypothetical scenario is to be taken as a joke filled with satire, there is much to be said in defence for the three wise men (actually, we do not know how many Magi visited, only that there were three gifts, hence the tradition that they were three wise men). Yet unfortunately, we only have room here for one rebuttal. On first appearance, the gifts which were presented to Jesus do seem odd. I mean, what use does a youngster have with gold, frankincense and myrrh? Now whilst it is true that these gifts were not practical, they were nevertheless appropriate, as each gift reveals something of Jesus identity and purpose. Gold is the gift to present to a king, which emphasises Jesus identity as the long awaited messiah, the anointed king, frankincense is the fitting offering to God, which implies Jesus divine nature and most surprising of all, myrrh was used in the embalming process of the deceased, which points to Jesus purpose for coming, his atoning death on the cross. Not only did the Magi give such costly and appropriate treasures, but they also gave of their time (about a four month journey of over fifteen hundred kilometres) and their talents (their astrological ability to know of and follow the significance of the guiding star). Even today, in fact, in every age, the appropriate response to Jesus, as was the Magi s, is to give him our three T s; our treasure, time and talent. As we commence the New Year, may we follow the lead of the Magi by giving of ourselves entirely to the one who gave himself entirely for us. 2

I pray that, at this Christmas-tide and through the coming year, you will all experience the love of Jesus Christ, the One who comes to us in such humility, and that the tenderness and gentleness of Mary, Jesus' Mother, will fill your lives, and that you will know the peace of God, Jesus' Father and our Heavenly Father, and that God's peace will strengthen and sustain you both now and forever more. Amen. Fr James Isaiah The OT Reading Isaiah Psalm 96 The Psalm Psalm 97 Titus The Epistle Hebrews Luke (15-20) The Gospel Luke (15-20) 3

Thank you for the time and effort that you have devoted to preparing for our Services of Lessons and Carols on Saturday and Sunday as well as for our Services for Christmas. I am grateful to each of our Choir Members for your devotion to God and for your help in leading our beautiful worship each week. Sheryl is such a blessing to us and I thank you, Sheryl, for all that you do to nurture the offering of such fine music in praise of God each week. Sheryl, Edwin, and our wonderful Choir are a great blessing and I thank each of you for your contribution to our community of faith. It is greatly appreciated. We have been successful with our application to have the Council install two Disabled Parking bays outside the Church on Burwood Road. This is very kind of the Council to do this on our behalf. Further to this, I recently met with a builder who will undertake ongoing maintenance on our grounds and buildings as a gift to God and to the Parish. In the first instance, as a high priority, the floors in the Rectory and Hall will be properly underpinned, all of the overgrown trees in our grounds will be lopped, a more effective pest control treatment will be applied, and a stone mason will come and consult with us about the need to re-point the exterior of the Church. It is very generous of the builder to do this for us and the work listed above is only the beginning of more needing to be done over the coming years. The money raised from the fundraising in 2015, being approximately $10,000.00, will go towards the heritage project. This money will be matched dollar for dollar by a kind friend of the parish. We are most grateful to Caitlyn and Alan Melrose for taking the time to select books for our children. We 4

pray that our children will know God's love for them all the days of their lives. We are deeply grateful to all those who came to our busy bee to clean, polish, dust, and garden to make our Church and grounds so beautiful as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. On behalf of the Choir and Edwin, I wish you all a happy and holy Christmas. Thank you for your continued appreciation of our contribution to St Paul's. My personal thanks to our singing friends who joined us for our splendid Carol Services. I am most grateful to Fr James for his encouragement at all times, and to Rosemary, Caroline, the Wardens and Parish Council for their support. On a personal note, thank you for your prayers for me during last few weeks. I look forward to seeing you all in Sheryl Southwood Director of Music Thank you to all who bought and sold tickets and donated all the wonderful things to put in the hamper. We made a resounding $ Some of the winners are: Barbara Hawkins, Jane Woods, Elsa Sorenson, Andrew Connelly. If anyone has a mango tree or any other fruit suitable for making chutney, jam or pickles, please let Pam Brock know. Thank you. Fr James, our Rector will be on leave from 27th of December until 2nd of January Rosemary, our Lay Minister will be on leave from 27th of December until 2nd of January Caroline, Our Office Secretary will be on leave from Christmas Eve through to Tuesday 12th January Fr James, Rosemary and Caroline take this opportunity to wish you all a very Blessed Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year 2016! 5

Read Ephesians 5:3-20 You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s own people. In order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of the darkness into his marvellous light. 1 Peter 2-9(NRSV) Jesus was born when shepherds were keeping watch over their flock by night. (Luke 2:8) The world into which he came was as dark as the night. An iron- fisted ruler was on the throne. Palestine s governor, Herod, was cruel. Joseph and Mary came to Bethlehem to register and to pay taxes to a dictator. The world was troubled by hunger, poverty, disease, and ignorance. Because many of our Carols sound sweet and gentle, we forget the harsh world into which Jesus was born. Our world is troubled by war, conflict, hurricanes, earthquake, hunger, disease, poverty, ignorance, and racial strife. Each of us at some time suffers loss and discouragement, emotional breakdowns, and family quarrels. Loneliness and suicide mar the joy proclaimed by Christmas, and the darkness of our sin can become an overwhelming burden. But Jesus came because the world is troubled. His light and love penetrate the darkness. If we follow him we will have the light of life (John 8 v12). Playgroup will resume on Monday 8 February at 9.30am. Please feel free to invite anyone you know with young children to join us. Children Church will resume on Sunday 14 February at 9.30am Service. Wishing you all a very Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2016! 6

Prayers for growth : The Anglican Church in England has been declining for over a 100 years. Those who profess a Christian faith in the Anglican tradition here in Australia, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures have been in decline for some time, particularly since The English cleric and author Bob Jackson (Hope for the Church (2002); The Road to Growth (2005)) argued that it was high time the Church adopted a strategy for growth, rather than one for managed decline. At a recent seminar here in Australia he articulated the lessons learned from the Church of England s response to the challenges of a real decline in church attendance and church growth (What makes Churches grow? (2015)). He also gently challenged his Australian audience to respond to his material. Those Parishes in the Diocese of Sydney who understand themselves to be sacramental, liturgical, and pastoral in nature, as well as honouring the written word and the Living Word, can and, dare I say it, should address these self-same issues. The question is: how to grow with grace? There are four key elements involved in growing a healthy Church 1. Prayer, in which we turn to God to give growth in every spiritual gift and grace as well numerical and financial growth. Heavenly Father, you have welcomed us into your kingdom and your heart s desire is to draw every human being to yourself. Grant us clear eyes to see people as you see them, sensitive feet to stand in their shoes, and warm smiles to welcome them in your name. Give us such generous hearts that our church becomes a foretaste of heaven where every soul you send us finds their loving home in the community of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. God of Mission Who alone brings growth to your Church, Send your Holy Spirit to give Vision to our planning, Wisdom to our actions, And power to our witness. Help our church to grow in numbers, In spiritual commitment to you, And in service to our local community, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 2. Welcome, in which we genuinely seek to welcome all people into the community of faith. We aren't a club or a secret society we are the Body of Christ and we are, in Paul's words, to "welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God." (Romans 15:7) 3. Nurture, where we care for one another and help to nurture new Christians and each and every one with whom we share the journey of faith, hope, and love. 7

We will begin a study in the new year, beginning with our Lenten Study, to help each of us to understand the depths of our Anglican heritage and then, following on from this, to meet regularly to reflect on what God is saying to us in the Holy Scriptures. This study will be on Thursday evenings. 4. Worship with contemporary music, where we worship God with our beautiful Anglican Eucharistic liturgy along with music that makes our worship accessible to whole new generations of Christians. Our Director of Music, Sheryl Southwood, fully supports this initiative and we will begin this new Service on Saturday evenings in the new year. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Thursday 24 and Friday 25 December 2015 Christmas Eve Night and early morning Isaiah 9.2-7; Psalm 96; Titus ; Luke (15-20) Christmas Day During the Day I Isaiah ; Psalm 97; Titus 3.4-8a; Luke 2.(1-7) 8-20 Christmas Day During the Day II Isaiah ; Psalm 98; Hebrews (5-12); John Our time of eager, patient, and watchful anticipation has come to an end for in a manger on the outskirts of Bethlehem, a Child is born! What joy fills our hearts as shepherds, angels, and kings come to adore him! We are drawn to this pure, perfect, and loving babe who has chosen to live among us, as one of us, bringing us out of darkness into the bright celestial light of a loving and caring God. For now, it is enough to bask in the glow of his light. Venite adoremus! Pray that all may experience the light of Christ s life and love. Pray for the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East, giving thanks for the work they do to further God s mission in the world. Text: The Rev Laurette Glasgow, Special Advisor for Government Relations for the Anglican Church of Canada and the Diocese of Ottawa Anglican Board of Mission,

First aid kits are located on the wall of the kitchen in the Large Hall behind the church and in the choir vestry. People needing wheelchair access can enter St Paul s most conveniently by the door at the base of the belltower. Name badges help make St Paul s an inclusive community. If you need a new name badge, fill in the form on the inside back cover, send it to the parish office, and one will be made and left in church for you. Please turn your mobile phone off or on to silent before the service starts. It ll save you much embarrassment later on. Toilets are available at the entrance to the parish hall, which is located behind the church. Ask a member of the clergy or anyone who s wearing a name badge. We re here to help. Kids are welcome in church at any service. There is a selection of children s books and toys at the back of the church near the font and there are also kids activity sheets and pencils available at the back of the church where the pew sheets and prayer books are. Children s Church runs during Term Time. Meet at the back of the church at the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist. Please feel free to bring your children to the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to receive Communion if they have been admitted to the sacrament. As you take your place in your pew, please make yourself aware of the route to the nearest emergency exit. Should there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right, and assemble by the roundabout on Burwood Road. 9

of your generosity to us, an echo of your kingdom. Amen. (Ted Loder) Pray for the Anglican Church for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Phillip, Primate of Australia; Glenn, Archbishop of Sydney; Michael Stead, Our Regional Bishop and for all the bishops, priests, deacons and Religious of the Anglican Communion. We pray for Fr Michael Deasey and Antonia as they prepare to commence at St Paul s in the New Year. Pray for St Paul s: God of mercy, strengthen us to help shape a parish where diversity is a source of enrichment, compassion is common, life s poetry realized, suffering lightened through sharing, justice attended, joy pervasive, hope lived, the hum of the universe heard, and together with you and each other we build what is beautiful, true, worthy Pray for, St Matthew s, Zababdeh, (West Bank, Palestinian Territorries), our Anglican Communion Partner: We remember especially their Parish Priest, Fr Saleem Dawani, and his ministry in the parish. We remember also Jameel Maher, who acts as the St Matthew s partnership link person with us. May both our parishes be blessed by the link we are establishing. Pray for the Church s mission: Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honour of your name. Amen. (Author unknown) Pray for our Children s Church: The Lord said, Let the little children come to me and do not forbid them for such is the kingdom of heaven. Bless, Lord, your children who now stand before you in prayer. Help them to understand the depth of your love. We pray also for all the teachers of our Children s Church. May our teachers be enabled to teach and train your children and help them to grow spiritually. 10
