First aid kits are located on the wall of the kitchen in the Large Hall behind the church and in the choir vestry. People needing wheelchair access can enter St Paul s most conveniently by the door at the base of the belltower. Name badges help make St Paul s an inclusive community. If you need a new name badge, fill in the form on the inside back cover, send it to the parish office, and one will be made and left in church for you. Please turn your mobile phone off or on to silent before the service starts. It ll save you much embarrassment later on. Toilets are available at the entrance to the parish hall, which is located behind the church. Ask a member of the clergy or anyone who s wearing a name badge. We re here to help. As you take your place in your pew, please make yourself aware of the route to the nearest emergency exit. Should there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right, and assemble by the roundabout on Burwood Road. Kids are welcome in church at any service. There is a selection of children s books and toys at the back of the church near the font and there are also kids activity sheets and pencils available at the back of the church where the pew sheets and prayer books are. During term time Sunday School runs. Kids are collected from by the font the back of the church at the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist and then they rejoin us in church for the prayer of thanksgiving. Please feel free to bring your children to the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to receive Communion if they have been admitted to it.

During the sixteenth century, people returned to their mother church, the main church or cathedral of the area, for a service to be held on Laetare Sunday. This was either a large local church, or more often the nearest Cathedral. Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone "a-mothering", although whether this term preceded the observance of Mothering Sunday is unclear. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together, since on other days they were prevented by conflicting working hours, and servants were not given free days on other occasions. The children would pick wild flowers along the way to place in the church or give to their mothers. Eventually, the religious tradition evolved into the Mothering Sunday secular tradition of giving gifts to mothers. By the 1920s the custom of keeping Mothering Sunday had tended to lapse in Ireland and in continental Europe. In 1914, inspired by Anna Jarvis's efforts in the United States, Constance Penswick-Smith created Continued next page

the Mothering Sunday Movement, and in 1921 she wrote a book asking for the revival of the festival; Constance was the daughter of the vicar of Coddington, Nottinghamshire, and there is a memorial to her in Coddington's church. Its widescale revival was through the influence of American and Canadian soldiers serving abroad during World War II; the traditions of Mothering Sunday, still practised by the Church of England and Church of Ireland were merged with the newly imported traditions and celebrated in the wider Catholic and secular society. UK-based merchants saw the commercial opportunity in the holiday and relentlessly promoted it in the UK; by the 1950s, it was celebrated across all the UK. People from Ireland and the UK started celebrating Mother's Day on the same day that Mothering Sunday was celebrated, the fourth Sunday in Lent. The two celebrations have now been mixed up, and many people think that they are the same thing. Mothering Sunday remains in the calendar of some Canadian Anglican churches, particularly those with strong English connections. 5 Mothering Sunday falls on the Fourth Sunday in Lent, which is today, Sunday 30 March giving us the opportunity to thank God for all those who have nurtured us in our journey of life and faith, especially our mothers. We also give thanks to God for the Church which has nurtured us in our journey of life and faith as well. Thanks to the parishioner who made our beautiful Simnel Cake and to the parishioners who made the posters of flowers, we are truly blessed. Please join us today for our Parish Lunch at La Plaka at midday. All are welcome! Holding $10 each Holding $25 each (4 only) Hand Painted Crosses individual prices c. $20 from El Salvador. (3 only) As announced by Alan Melrose at the AGM, St Paul s is now able to purchase food for the Parish Pantry through Food Bank. Whilst this will help in stocking the Pantry shelves it will in no way alleviate the need for continued contributions by you, the parishioners. Food Bank works on the principle of surplus lines and foods nearing their use by dates. This means that there is no predictability in what will be available to us. Those people that come in regularly for a little help have quite specific needs that we will continue to try to meet. These centre around products such as Heinz All Day Breakfast and Sun Rise complete meals. So please continue to support the Parish Pantry in all the ways that you have been doing.

Food Bank is a new endeavour and it may take us a few weeks or even months to get it sorted out as to how we can best use it to help our friends. We will endeavour to let you know each week what our current needs are. We will keep you updated so you can see how we are going and adjust your giving accordingly. Each week we are blessed by your generosity to the Parish Pantry. Somehow we manage to fill the shelves with good and wholesome food that is appreciated by a number of regular visitors. However we are now getting more and more people who have to swallow their pride and come and ask for food. No one is turned away. This week we would like to put in a special request. Just for the time being we do not need anymore small milks, tea or hot chocolate, but we do need coffee, and cold drinks like poppers. We are in urgent need of complete meals such as Heinz all Day Breakfast, small tins of tuna and other meats such as ham and corned beef which add protein to the diet. THANK YOU to each and everyone one of you who help to keep the shelves replenished. We thank God for the Peace Rose given in memory of the late Olive Burchell. We received the following card from Gillian and family here s its contents: Dear James, Rosemary, John, Caroline and all at St Paul s, Wishing you many blessings not only at Easter, but the whole year through. With love From Gillian & family

Our aim is to make 250 over the next two to three years. Wouldn t it be great if this numbered 100 by the end of this year. How lovely it will be to see them making their way into our beautiful church, and remember the thinner kneelers will also make beautiful cushions. It has become a habit that each Monday morning I send off a new order to the UK so don t think it is too late to join the project. This is a long term undertaking and if you don t have time to make one now, you might have time next month or later still. We have now settled on 3 for the Annunciation design and 7 for all the other designs. So these cost $100 and $145 respectively.

Wednesdays. It is not too late to join the Mosaic Workshops. We would love to see some new faces. Please come on either Monday nights (6.30pm- 8pm) or Wednesdays (11am-2pm) or both. Does anyone have any jigsaw pieces.? Two longstanding and loyal parishioners of St Paul's congregation are moving on to reside in other Diocese - Newcastle and Bendigo. Keith Lane moved to the parish in the mid 80's, living in Woodside Street and began attending the Parish Church. He quickly became involved in parish life including change ringing, sidesman, Member of parish council, Synod Representative, Parish Nominator, Churchwarden, and Parish Treasurer. Keith was on the Readers Roster for the Eucharist and he was committed to the Church in Burwood and served it faithfully as a devoted communicant and worked hard for the Church's mission in Burwood. When he retired as a Churchwarden and Parish Treasurer at the AGM in 2011 the Rector, Fr James, immediately bestowed upon him and the retiring Rector's Warden, Barry Brandy, the title of Churchwarden Emeritus.

Margarete Ferris arrived in the Parish in 1994 and soon involved herself as an active member of the parish family becoming a member of the parish choir and later as one of the serving team and for many years as the Crucifer and helping with sacristy duties as well as being on the readers roster. Margarete was always there when she was needed. Margarete also became the "provider" of the traditional Simnel Cake for Mothering Sunday (Lent IV)-a task done with loving commitment for many years. Both Keith and Margarete are moving to new homes situated in other Diocese where they will begin another chapter in their Christian pilgrimage - they will be sorely missed from the pews of St Paul's. Past and present parishioners of Burwood Parish Church can simply express their deepest gratitude and appreciation in those two powerful words, THANK YOU. Thank you for being who you are and sharing your lives and faith with us; thank you for what you have done for the parish and above all thank you for what you have done for the cause of the Gospel and His Church in Burwood. Our prayerful best wishes go with you both - may God bless you and enfold you with His love. We wish them much happiness in their new homes and our warmest regards to them and their extended families. Prayer is reaching out after the unseen; fasting is letting go of all that is seen and temporal. Fasting helps express, deepen, confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even ourselves to attain what we seek for the kingdom of God. Andrew Murray ( ) Missionary and Minister

I m the pastor of a medium-size congregation in Madison, Wisconsin, St Dunstan s Church. On Thursday evenings in Lent, we ve been walking the Stations of the Cross at 6:00 pm, before our potluck supper and Lenten program. It's always a small group (our max has been 5, I think). Tonight it was just me, my son G (7-going-on-8), and a woman who is new to our community. We used the order of service from the Book of Occasional Services, and we walked around the full-length glass doors that form the outside walls of our church, where paper cutouts of the 14 stations are taped to the windows. The images are based on a set created by an artist who was one of the original members of the congregation back in the 1960s. I had a little talk with G in the car about what the Stations are - kind of a story, kind of a church service - and I asked him to try to tune in and listen. I let him know he could read a station, if he wanted to; he said he didn't. He took his own Stations booklet, and grabbed a red marker. On the way into church he asked me, "Can I draw in this?" I hesitated a moment before saying, "Sure, go ahead." What did G do, while we were going around and reading the Stations? He stood with us -sometimes relatively still, sometimes hopping from foot to foot. Sometimes reading along in his booklet, sometimes flopping his booklet back and forth, sometimes holding his booklet over his face with just his eyes peering over. He wandered off and sat down on a chair, a rocker, the floor. He drew a cross in red marker on one page of the booklet. He gazed at the art. He breathed on the glass of the windows and drew crosses in the water vapor with his finger. He fell over, once. He peered into the faces of the two adults in the room, to try to figure out what we were thinking and feeling. Sometimes he read the responses with us; sometimes he missed them. And - I know this because I'm his mom, and because at least half my

attention was on him the whole time I guess my dream for the church, - he was tuned in, listening, taking it the big-c Church, all the churches, in and thinking about it, the whole is that our hospitality for the children among us, our recognition of time. He read Station 8 and Station 10. He declined to read again, but looks different from listening and the other adult encouraged him to participating and engaging, for read the last one, and he did. My hope, I suppose, is for that sense of order to grow gradually more robust, so that the lesser disruptions of our younger worshippers (and sometimes the older ones, too!) are taken in stride. Lenten Studies will be held after the mid-week Eucharist on Wednesdays at am in the Rectory at St Paul's, Burwood, each week throughout Lent. Fauré s beloved Requiem is more a lullaby of eternal rest than an expression of divine judgment: death as an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience. This performance of the early chamber orchestra version (faithful to the composer s intentions) emphasises the sublime intimacy of this exquisite music. Sydney Chamber Choir in conjunction with the Metropolitan Orchestra is inviting you to a Fauré's Requiem on Saturday 12 April at 7.30pm at City Recital Hall, Angel Place.
