The exciting news on Facebook today from Joshua Ryan: " I have received confirmation that I have completed my honours year and have been awarded the University Medal for music. I am surprised and overwhelmed by this achievement. Over the past few years people have questioned my commitment to my studies and why I didn't put other things first. For me, this achievement completely justifies why I put so much effort and time into my education. I have enjoyed every moment of it." We extend our sincere congratulations to Joshua on this notable achievement. Joshua Ryan was born in 1994 in Sydney, Australia. He commenced his organ studies in late Currently he is studying for a Bachelor of Music Honours (performance) degree, majoring in Organ, at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (The University of Sydney). His teachers have included Philip Swanton, Peter Jewkes, Thomas Wilson, and Oliver Brett. In 2011 Joshua received a scholarship to study at the Prospective Organ Scholar Course at Oxford University. At Oxford he received lessons from Susan Landale, James Parsons, David Goode, and Daniel Hyde. This scholarship also allowed him to travel throughout the UK and Holland. In late 2011 Joshua received first prize in the Intermediate Section of the Sydney Organ Competition. Joshua has performed in major Sydney venues such as the Sydney Opera House (as part of its open day celebrations in 2010 and 2011), the Sydney Town Hall, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, St Mary's Cathedral, Christ Church St Laurence, and St Andrew s Cathedral. In 2015 he was invited to give a recital in Hardenberg,

Holland. He also actively performs with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra, and Wind Symphony Orchestra. In 2015, Joshua performed as a soloist with the Conservatorium's Wind Symphony Orchestra in the premier performance of "Requiem for a City" by Matthew Hindson and Paul Mac as part of the Conservatorium's centenary celebrations. Joshua has held scholarship positions at St Mary s Cathedral, Sydney, and St Stephen's Church Macquarie Street, Sydney. Between June 2015 and July 2018 he was Organ Scholar of Christ Church St Laurence. Currently, Joshua is working as a freelance organist, accompanist, and teacher in both Sydney and Canberra. On 6th of August the Universal Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration and so as not to neglect such an important and interesting Festival we will celebrate the Feast NEXT Sunday with a Liturgical procession to honour the Feast. S. Matthew says Jesus was transfigured before them. His face shone as the sun: his garments became white as snow. (Mt 17:1-6). The Feast has been celebrated in the east since the fourth century in and around Jerusalem and appeared in the west (Spain) from the eleventh century. Is the Feast shrouded in mystery what does it teach us about the life/ ministry of Jesus and the disciples? Why does tradition indicate it took place forty days before the crucifixion and why was the 6 August chosen as the date on which to celebrate the event forty days before 14 September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross? Come along next Sunday to find the answers and to join in the celebration of this Feast of our Lord. Graham Norman Tickets are available for the Father's Day raffle. $2 each or 3 for $5. The prize is GMC Light weight blower Vacuum2400w.

Over the years the parish has benefitted from the generosity of parishioners, not only when they have been active members of the parish, but also at the time of their death. Parishioners are invited to remember the parish in their wills by making a bequest as a thank offering to God and to ensure that generations to come will enjoy worship and fellowship in well maintained buildings. Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these or a similar form of words: "I bequeath the sum of $... to the Rector and Wardens of the Anglican parish of St Paul, Burwood, to be used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the parish." If you would like to make a donation to the Parish for the upkeep and maintenance of the Heritage building it can be done through the National Trust. Cheques can be made out to National Trust of Australia (NSW) St Paul s Anglican Church Burwood Or Direct Credit to the above name with bank account details Westpac BSB: Account number: Branch: 275 George Street Sydney NSW Please contact Pam for more details or place a donation in an envelope and label with National Trust donation and include your name for your receipt and an address to post it to. Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who is dropping their loose change in the box at the back to help fund new linen for our sanctuaries. Already some money has gone towards the new red burse and veil we used at Pentecost and we now have almost enough to purchase our first new altar cloth for the high altar. As our altar is narrower than some, the maker will be able to cut two cloths from the one length of fabric thus reducing our costs for a second cloth. With everyone s help, our altars will be looking wonderful by Christmas and if we keep up the practice of throwing in our coins we may in time be able to carry out repairs on our wonderful frontals. Just to say thank you for your prayers (as always) but specifically for the race in Port Macquarie I've been preparing for! I started at 6:30AM Saturday, and finished just before 6:30 on Sunday morning. I completed 100KMs in just under 24 hours and finished 5th among the women. It's funny how the extreme isolation of the bush at night makes one feel closer to God - many many hours alone, and I definitely did not feel alone at all. There was a steep ascent up where, at the top, the stars are the brightest I've ever seen - I gave thanks to God for being alive in this universe. (I also, slightly deliriously, practiced the plainsong Kyrie the choir did a few weeks back to keep myself occupied, as I picked my way through a dry riverbed at about 2 in the morning. I think Sheryl would be proud.)

In the recovery phase, I'm grateful to be uninjured, though shoes are not quite tolerable on my poor feet just yet. - Elizabeth

The ABM Sydney Committee invites you to celebrate The Feast of the Commemoration of the New Guinea Martyrs at a Eucharist Service which will be held at the Church of St John the Evangelist, Balmain (Cnr Spring St & Birchgrove Rd., Balmain) on Saturday 1st September at 11am. Celebrant: Fr Peter Yeats (Rector) Speaker: Mr Howard Graham Refreshments afterwards in the Parish Hall. For those able to stay, please RSVP to Margaret White via margjohnwhite@gmail.com When Maree de Marco talks about Australia's treatment of asylum seekers you can feel the anger rising inside her. You hear the words catch in her throat. What a terrible thing, to be ashamed of the country you love. "I can't put it any other way," she says. "I hate that part of Australia." Since ministers in the Howard government claimed that asylum seekers had thrown children overboard in 2001, de Marco wanted to do something to help refugees. But how? She was a single woman living in central Victoria, far from Australia's offshore detention centres. In 2012, after falling in love with an American man, she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. A dry city surrounded by rugged mountains, it is best known as the global headquarters of the Mormon church. De Marco still followed the news about Australia's refugee policies, but she felt more distant and helpless than ever.

Then, while checking her Facebook feed in May, an advertisement caught her eye. It was for a group connecting Australian expats with refugees resettled in the US under the deal struck between Malcolm Turnbull and the US president Barack Obama. An estimated 300 refugees from Manus Island and Nauru have been resettled in the US since September. "I thought, 'I'm an immigrant myself so I could definitely help someone in the same situation,'" she says. But she didn't expect there to be any refugees from Manus Island or Nauru in Salt Lake City. It turned out there was, and that one of them wanted to meet her. Before arriving in the US, Rohingya refugee Mohammad Noor had been imprisoned in some form or another for almost a decade. At 15 he fled Myanmar, where authorities have a long history of violence and discrimination against the Rohingya people, and escaped to Thailand. He says he was imprisoned there for eight months before fleeing to Malaysia. From there he went to Indonesia and decided to take an asylum boat to Australia. But the boat was intercepted and he spent the next year in jail. In 2013 he tried again only to find, when his boat reached Australian waters, that Kevin Rudd had declared no asylum seeker who arrived by boat would be resettled in Australia. Noor, now 25, spent the next five years on Manus Island, an experience he describes as "unspeakable". "Sometimes we survived without water, without food for days. My family's village was burnt down and I had no way of contacting them. I thought I would be stuck there forever." The day he found out he had been accepted for resettlement in America was the happiest moment in his life, he says. He chose to live in Salt Lake City because he has a cousin who lives there. "This is the first time for me living in a place of freedom. I'm so excited to be here." Four months after his arrival, Noor and de Marco met for coffee at Starbucks.

"I told him I'm aware of what happened on Manus Island, of people sowing up their mouths," de Marco says. "He said he had friends committing suicide around him and I just burst out crying. I thought, 'How can we do this to people?'" "If I was in his shoes I would be thinking, 'Australia really doesn't like me'. I wanted him to know that some of us would open our arms to refugees." All over the US - from California to Ohio to Texas - meetings like this have been happening since Ads-Up (Australian Diaspora Steps Up) quietly launched two months ago. The group was founded by two Australians living in New York, fashion designer Fleur Wood and Ben Winsor, a journalist who has covered the resettlement of refugees in the US. "As I was writing these stories I was thinking, I wish someone was helping these people a bit more," he says. "It is such an abrupt thing to come to America after five years on Manus or Nauru and to be on your own. It is very startling for some people." Wood and Winsor decided to use targeted Facebook advertising to tap into the estimated network of 100,000 Australians in America. "The idea was: we've moved here, we've learnt how to navigate the bureaucracy, maybe we can help other people when they arrive," Winsor says. More than 300 Australians have signed up to participate and the group's database includes more than 120 refugees. Winsor says some volunteers - like de Marco - are driven by a desire to repent for government policies they disagree with. Others had never really taken much interest in refugee issues but want to help out. "We don't mind why people get involved. We're not preachy, we don't have a political position."

The Australian expats help refugees in many ways: filling out government forms, fine-tuning resumes and navigating the bamboozling US healthcare system. Ads-Up has also secured free dental work for refugees and negotiated with landlords to stop refugee families from being evicted for falling behind on rent. But the emotional connection is often most important, Winsor says. "Some of these refugees are 20 or 21, and they arrive in a small town where there might be no other refugees or anyone else from their country. To have a friendly face, someone who cares about them, it's meaningful." The organisation, which currently has little funding, is now aiming to raise enough money to help cover refugees' study expenses. "Many are in jobs working $US7.75 [$10.49] an hour, and they spend all that on rent and food," Winsor says. "It's not enough to make a better life. They're struggling just to keep their head above water." In Salt Lake City, where he has lived for six months, Noor works as a forklift driver on the night shift, sending much of his income to family members in refugee camps in Bangladesh. He wants to get his high school equivalency and become a police officer. Since their first meeting, de Marco and Noor have had a picnic together by the river and Noor has cooked a traditional curry for de Marco and her husband. In the future they plan to go fishing together and to the movies. "They are very kind, they are like family," Noor says. "I will appreciate them forever." De Marco says: "I'm hoping I can be a friend. I've made it clear I'm available at any time. If he has a problem I will step in and step in loudly. "I want him to succeed, to be able to do everything and feel everything the rest of us do. He deserves that."
