First aid kits are located on the wall of the kitchen in the Large Hall behind the church and in the choir vestry. People needing wheelchair access can enter St Paul s most conveniently by the door at the base of the belltower. Name badges help make St Paul s an inclusive community. If you need a new name badge, fill in the form on the inside back cover, send it to the parish office, and one will be made and left in church for you. Please turn your mobile phone off or on to silent before the service starts. It ll save you much embarrassment later on. Toilets are available at the entrance to the parish hall, which is located behind the church. Ask a member of the clergy or anyone who s wearing a name badge. We re here to help. As you take your place in your pew, please make yourself aware of the route to the nearest emergency exit. Should there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right, and assemble by the roundabout on Burwood Road. Kids are welcome in church at any service. There is a selection of children s books and toys at the back of the church near the font and there are also kids activity sheets and pencils available at the back of the church where the pew sheets and prayer books are. During term time Sunday School runs. Kids are collected from by the font the back of the church at the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist and then they rejoin us in church for the prayer of thanksgiving. Please feel free to bring your children to the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to receive Communion if they have been admitted to it.

In 1952 Mr Spencer, the church architect, was asked to discuss plans for a possible new parish hall. The existing one was further down Burwood Road near where Snap printing is. It was a wooden building and a hive of activity for all the groups of the parish. A company was called to discuss steel frames, for a possible new hall but no decision could be reached until members of the Parish Council could inspect similar buildings elsewhere. In March 1953, further discussions were made with Mr Spencer with the possibility of adding to the current hall but he advised that the hall was in such bad state of repair it would not be advisable to add to it as it was in a shopping area and not suitable for a Sunday School. It was agreed that the old hall should be sold and a new hall erected in the church grounds. The selling price of the old hall was fixed at 7,500 pounds. Mr Spencer drew up the plans but could not supervise the building so he recommended Mr Lindsay Little. Continued next page...

In May 1953 a working bee was organized to remove trees and gardens. The young people offered to help and Mrs Sanders, the Rector s wife, served refreshments to all the workers. It was estimated the new hall would cost 28,000 pounds. Members of the Parish Council felt a less elaborate hall should be built. We are lucky that the plans were not modified too much and very fortunate to have such a wonderful building for use 60 years on. The plans for the hall were approved in September In November 1953 the tender of Cooper Constructions for 19,960 pounds for the hall s erection on the site of the Rectory orchard was accepted. The building was to be completed in 20 weeks. In December 1953 a honey coloured brick for inside and out was chosen for the walls. Building commenced in January An ordinance was passed by the Standing Committee of Synod for the right to borrow 10,000 pounds for the financing of the hall. The laying of the Foundation Stone was arranged for 6th March 1954 by His Grace the Archbishop of Sydney Dr. H.W.K.Mowell. His Grace spoke of the work of St Paul s and that the building of this magnificent hall which, when completed would probably be the largest and most modern parish hall in the diocese. It would be the centre of life for the parishioners and young people and others could find their spiritual

Guidance, learning and recreation. We are blessed with this hall and the forethought of our forbearers. There will be a birthday cake today to acknowledge the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Laying of the Hall s Foundation Stone (which was last Thursday 6th March). The mosaic design of the Notice Board, which a group from the parish worked on, over the last couple of months, will also be blessed. It is now installed in the hall foyer. Pam Brock Tickets will soon be available for sale for the Mother's Day raffle. There are lots of great prizes; a hand crocheted rug, and a George Foreman electric steamer and lots more. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5 Yesterday Fr James officiated at the wedding of Giuseppe Baudille and Cristina Maria Frigo. We pray God s blessing upon them as they begin their lives together. The Union Jack now hanging in the Lady Chapel was the personal flag carried by Captain Terry O Brien, Battalion Padre, during the entire Aitape-Wewak ( New Guinea) under which he often buried

men of the Battalion, who died during conflict. Father Ronald Arthur Terry O Brien was the 6th Rector of St Paul s. This flag was hanging in the parish hall without any protection from the atmosphere or insect infestation. This flag has now been conserved and framed. We received a donation towards this conservation and framing from the Burwood R.S.L. It was great to share a Shrove Tuesday pancake meal on Tuesday night. It was a wonderful opportunity to share fellowship and good food and we are very grateful to the Woods' family for preparing this meal for us. St Paul's is a community of faith that seeks to "Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God" (Romans 15: 7) and the meal was a time of excellent food and fellowship. Fr James Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday as it is referred to in some South American countries, was celebrated with much feasting and merriment last Tuesday evening. Bob and Jane Woods, along with Genevieve and Matthew turned on a feast to rival any. With Jane's own creations we indulged in corn and pea frittatas, with sides of avocado, diced tomatoes and chutney, followed by rice flower pancakes with crab meat and horseradish sauce, especially for those requiring gluten free food, but everyone loved them. And of course Pancake Tuesday would never be the same without sweet pancakes - the traditional lemon and sugar, maple syrup, or you could choose strawberries, blueberries and banana with

butterscotch butter and lots of cream and ice cream. Tea and coffee finished off the evening. As tradition would have it we have finished off the flour, eggs and butter and all those perishable foods that would not last throughout the period of Lent. In doing so we enjoyed good company and gave thanks to God for his bounteous gifts to us, remembering those that do not enjoy the same benefits that we do. A very big thank you to Jane who, with her family put on this wonderful spread for us. Rosemary King the time to make one but are happy to fund one there is a table of prices below. If you cannot afford to buy one but would like to make one then that option is also available. Kits already ordered cost $100, below are the prices for any kits to be ordered from now on. You will be notified when your kit arrives. 3 deep 5 deep 7 deep $100 $120 $145 A chart showing the various patterns is also available at the back of the church. The first of the kits for making our new tapestry kneelers have arrived! Thank you to all those people who have volunteered to make one of these beautiful kneelers for our church. It is not too late to order a kit. You might like to make one up for where you sit in church. We are aiming to make 250 kneelers over the next two years so please put your name down if you can help. If you don t feel you have Mosaic workshops are on: Mondays 6.30pm-8pm Wednesdays 11am-2pm. Dates for 2014: March 2014 Mon 10; Wed 12 Mon 24; Wed 26 Mon 31 April 2014 Wed 2 Please wear enclosed shoes for protection and bring lunch on Wednesdays.

Tea and coffee supplied. We are looking for scrabble letters and wooden puzzle pieces. Does anyone have any that we can have to use for the mosaic project? We do not require the puzzle to be complete or a complete set of letters. Dear Fr James, As we prepare to embark on the Lenten journey, Victor, Vongai and I would like to say we are thinking of you and the parish of St Paul's, and the opportunity that lies ahead of us when that journey draws to a close. A major part of our Lenten journey will be to read and study Scripture, seek to discern what God desires of us to share with you in the Holy Week. We trust in your prayers for us in this endeavour, and assure you and all of our prayers for you. Lent is a time for prayer, reflection, penitence and sacrifice as we prepare for the coming of Easter. it is a time to reflect what Mission means to us and the ways in which we can deepen our faith in Christ through action. ABM Lenten envelopes will be available each Sunday through lent. The Fourth Sunday of Lent is Mothering Sunday giving us the opportunity to thank God for all those who have nurtured us in our journey of life and faith, especially our mothers. We also give thanks to God for the Church which has nurtured us in our journey of life and faith as well. To celebrate Mothering Sunday we will have Simnel Cake and flowers to share. This year, Mothering Sunday is on the 30th of March.

This performance of the early, chamber orchestra version (faithful to the composer s intentions) emphasises the sublime intimacy of this exquisite music. 11 There will be a Service of Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday, 8 June. Our Regional Bishop, Bishop Robert Forsyth, will be joining us for both Services on that day. At the 9.30 am Service, we already have several adult and adolescent candidates who will be Confirmed. Please pray for our candidates that God will: Increase in them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of discernment and inner strength, The spirit of knowledge and true godliness, And fill them with wonder and awe at your presence, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. If you would like to be Confirmed or Received into the Anglican Communion then please speak with Fr James, Fr John, or Rosemary. There will be four sessions held after Church to prepare for Confirmation/Reception into the Anglican Communion. These will be held on: Sunday 27 April; Sunday 4 May Sunday 18 May; Sunday 25 May Each session will be held in the Rectory beginning at 11.15am and finishing at 12.15pm. Each candidate will be given a copy of Graeme Brady's series called Anglican before this, so that the candidates can read it and then we would discuss several topics each week when we gather.

The Anglican Communion s Environmental Network (ACEN) is encouraging Christians around the world to take part in a carbon-fast this Lent. The network is calling on Anglicans to take a deeper challenge than fasting from coffee, alcohol or chocolates this Lent, by reducing the use of carbon based fuels on which we all depend. We will take small steps for a more sustainable world, and by doing so rediscover a different relationship with God, with Creation and with one another, the group says on its website, adding: I can change the world a little in 40 days, but I can change myself a lot! For each week during Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday on 5 March to the Saturday before Holy Week on 12 April, the Network have developed themed materials to focus on a time of reflection and action. Under the headings, Stuff, Water, Energy and Mobility, Food Production, and Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Fix, there is a prayer, a resource to read or watch, actions to take as an individual, some suggestions of community actions you can take, and something you can consider doing to change the system. The network is also asking people to share the initiative using social media, and has produced cover photos and profile pix that people can use on Facebook. More details are available at carbonfast2014.wordpress.com or facebook.com/greenanglicans. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter through it. - Matthew 7:13

For Anglicans, Lent is the time when we remember the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, facing challenge and temptation. It is a time when we reflect on God s purpose for our life. Many Anglicans take this opportunity to fast from coffee, alcohol or chocolates. But this year our challenge is deeper, to take a carbon fast to reduce the use of carbon based fuels on which we all depend. We will take small steps for a more sustainable world, and by doing so rediscover a different relationship with God, with Creation and with one another. From Ash Wednesday, 5 March, to Saturday,12 April is a time of reflection and action. Each week has a theme with a prayer, a resource to read or watch, actions to take as an individual, some suggestions of community actions you can take and something you can consider doing to change the system. Love the earth just as much as God does Stuff Water Energy & Mobility Food Production Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Fix We re glad that you are joining us on a path less travelled towards a carbon-light lifestyle and outlook.

GLOBAL Saturday 22 March Ban the bottle. Bottles used to package water takes more than a thousand years to biodegrade. If incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. Over 80% of all single-use water bottles simply become litter. Buy yourself a re-usable bottle, preferably one made of glass. SABBATH Sunday 23 March How water-savvy is your church? Consider changing the taps in your building to those which switch on and off automatically. Or simply mend any dripping taps at your church! LEARN Monday 24 March Try to calculate how much meat you eat per week/ month. Remember that: A kilogram of steak could be responsible for as many greenhouse gases as driving a car for three hours while leaving all the lights on at home. Meat-Free Monday AT HOME Tuesday 25 March Buy energy-efficient appliances. If you re buying a washing machine, refrigerator, dishwasher or oven, buy the most ecofriendly and energyefficient model you can afford. IN COMMUNITY Wednesday 26 March Lean on a neighbour: Carpooling saves money and the environment. Organise to carpool to work next week with your neighbours, colleagues, friends or fellow churchgoers. SHARE Thursday 27 March Where does your electricity come from? Find out if your government has plans to depend increasingly more on renewable energy such as wind and solar power, and less on coal, nuclear power or shale gas. Write a handwritten letter to a politician, outlining your concerns. LOCAL Friday 28 March Learn about your neighbourhood. Is it possible to generate solar or wind power in your area? What would the process of utilising these resources look like for your community or your own home? Fish Friday GLOBAL Saturday 29 March Today Earth Hour happens from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Switch off all electrical appliances, lights etc. for one hour. Gather friends this evening to share a meal that does not require electricity to prepare, and enjoy the hour of darkness together.

SABBATH Sunday 30 March Is your church an eco- congregation? An eco- congregation is a faith- based community that makes a commitment to live more sustainably on the earth in response to the wisdom of sacred texts and faith traditions. Find out more by contacting the A Rocha office in your country. LEARN Monday 31 March Start, or transform, your own veggie patch by learning about gardening organically. Organic food is food which is produced using environmentally friendly methods and recognises the direct connection between our health and how the food we eat is produced. Meat-free Monday AT HOME Tuesday 1 April Prepare and enjoy a simple meal with local and seasonal food. Why not plan each meal this week around seasonal ingredients maybe even try a new ingredient or recipe. (Be sure to find out which fish species are endangered.) GLOBAL Saturday 4 April Cut air miles. Don't buy any food that you know has been imported by plane (apart from fair trade products). If labelling is unclear, ask. Instead, support local producers and choose seasonal fruits and vegetables. IN COMMUNITY Wednesday 2 April Organise an organic, seasonal, local, fresh produce market at your church once-off or start a monthly market. Invite local farmers and producers to engage with churchgoers and the larger community. SABBATH Sunday 5 April Find ways to garden in or with your church or community. Resurrect a forgotten wasteland or help weed a neighbour s garden. Grow things you can all eat and enjoy. SHARE Thursday 3 April Tell friends, family and acquaintances that you are participating in Meat- Free Mondays If you are a vegetarian, make Mondays dairy-free!

The need increases every week and as a result we often run out. Thank you to everyone who cares for our neighbours by contributing to the Parish Pantry. Of particular need are: Variety Cereals, individual custards, sweet biscuits, tinned meats such as corned beef, packaged meals that can be heated in a microwave oven or eaten cold. Our people do not have the facilities to make up a meal from scratch. In this hot weather drinks are always needed, for example poppers, and small bottles of water. Genesis 2:15-17,3:1-7; Psalm 32; Romans 5:12-21; Matthew 4:1-11 From the spiritual high of his baptism Jesus is led into the desert for a time of testing. This period of proving clarifies in his own mind the way in which his vocation and service must develop. Prayer: Lord, we are vulnerable creatures. May your strengthening presence be with us as we walk the deserts of our lives. Give thanks for the work and witness of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, the Philippines Independent Church. In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer we are asked to pray today for The Church of England, for The Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby, for all his clergy and people. Pray for Fr James, and for all the clergy in the parish as well as for their spouses. May God bless them and their ministries and may we support them as they work among us in Christ s name. Pray for St Paul s: God of mercy, strengthen us to help shape a parish where diversity is a source of enrichment, compassion is common, life s poetry realized, suffering lightened through sharing, justice attended, joy pervasive, hope lived, the hum of the universe heard, and together with you and each other we build what is beautiful, true, worthy of your generosity to us, an echo of your kingdom. Amen. (Ted Loder) Pray for, St Matthew s, Zababdeh, (West Bank, Palestinian Territorries), our Anglican Communion Partner: We remember especially their pastor, deacon Saleem Dawani, as he begins his ministry in the parish and as he prepares for being priested. We remember also Jameel Maher, who acts as the St Matthew s partnership link person with us. May both our parishes be blessed by the link we are establishing. Pray for the Church s mission: Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honour of your name. Amen. (Author unknown) Pray for our Sunday School: The Lord said, Let the little children come to me and do not forbid them for such is the kingdom of heaven. Bless, Lord, your children who now stand before you in prayer. Help them to understand the depth of your love. We pray also for all the teachers of our Sunday School. May our teachers be enabled to teach and train your children and help them to grow spiritually.

O Lord, bless our Sunday School and all its future endeavours, that through it we may glorify you with your Father and the Holy Spirit, now, always and forever. Amen. Pray for peace: Lead me from death to life, from falsehood to truth; lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust; lead me from hate to love, from war to peace. Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe. Pray for all in need.
