It was a delight to share our worship with you all last Sunday. I am very pleased that you have all been elected and/or appointed as members of our Parish Council or as Parish Nominators or as Synod Representatives or as our Safe Ministry Representative. Thank you very much for being prepared to serve God and our Parish as we seek to rebuild St. Paul's. Our first Parish Council meeting will be held on Wednesday the 19th of April at 7.30 p.m. in the Rectory. We begin each Parish Council meeting with a Eucharist. Those elected and/or appointed to the various positions are: Wardens: Jane Carrick Elizabeth Griffiths Pam Brock Parish Council: Andrew Connolly Barbara Hawkins Barbara Stone Bill Sullivan

Marjorie Gunasekara Rosemary King Serge Medina Fr. Michael Deasey Synod Representatives: Rosemary King Robert McLean Parish Nominators: Jane Carrick Elizabeth Griffiths Pam Brock Rosemary King Robert McLean Safe Ministry Representative: Rosemary King Your election and/or appointment is yet another sign of the way that God is breathing new life into the Parish and it is an honour to share the journey of life and faith with you as we seek to worship God and to build God's kingdom of justice, love, and peace here at St. Paul's. I look forward to sharing our journey through Lent and Holy Week with you as we remember and give thanks for our Lord's great sacrifice and as we celebrate his resurrection on Easter Day and each day thereafter. May the God who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead breathe new life into St. Paul's. We thank all those who have served the Parish over the past year and who are not continuing in those roles this year. Fr James

GREETING: The Lord be with you And also with you We come together today to commission the Wardens, Parish Council, Synod Representatives, Parish Nominators, and Safe Ministry Representative. CALL TO WORSHIP: Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Rm.15.7 OPENING PRAYER: Let us pray: There are diverse gifts: but it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God: but it is the same Lord who is served. God works through people in different ways: but it is the same God whose purpose is achieved in them all. Each one of us is given a gift by the Spirit: and there is no gift without its corresponding service. There is one ministry in Christ: and in this ministry we all share. Together we are the Body of Christ: and individually members of it.

Based on 1 Corinthians 12:4ff 1st READING: PHILIPPIANS 1: 3-11 I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God s grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. For the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God GOSPEL READING: JOHN 15: This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. For the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

COMMISSIONING: L. O Lord our God, in your wisdom you have brought these your servants to ministry within the Parish of St. Paul s Burwood. Pour out upon them your Holy Spirit. Encourage them that they may be enabled to fulfil their ministry in all faithfulness, diligence and courage. Give them the spirit of power and of love and conviction. Enable them to endure in the face of difficulty and opposition and to proclaim fearlessly your word to both the Church and community, caring for people as Christ has cared for us. ALL: God of peace, we have entrusted these people with various tasks within this Parish. Enable us to be forthright in our support of them and diligent in our prayers for them. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. L. May the life of this Parish be intertwined with the Spirit, so your Church may bring forth the fruits of Unity and Peace. ALL: God of grace, you call us all to ministry as ambassadors for Christ, trusting us with the message of reconciliation: give us understanding and courage, patience and grace, that with joy we may declare your wonderful deeds and show your love to the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF COMMITTAL Into your hands, O God, we commit this your world, this your family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was content to be betrayed, and to suffer death upon the Cross. Into your hands we commit all the problems which seem insoluble, in sure and certain hope; for in you is our trust. Here and now, we lay all in your hands. All love, all glory, be unto you, for ever and ever. Amen.

Mothering Sunday falls on the Fourth Sunday in Lent, which is today, Sunday 26 March giving us the opportunity to thank God for all those who have nurtured us in our journey of life and faith, especially our mothers. We also give thanks to God for the Church which has nurtured us in our journey of life and faith as well. We are most grateful to the Parishioners who have taken the time and effort to make our beautiful Simnel Cake for us today and to who have prepared the posies of flowers for us too. Today we have reached the mid point of the Lenten season (Sundays are not counted as part of Lent and they are little feast days in this Solemn season). The 4th Sunday in Lent is also known as Laetare Sunday: (from the old Introit at Mass- Laetare Jerusalem O be joyful, Jerusalem Isaiah 66:10), otherwise known as Mothering Sunday. We mark this mid- Lenten feast with the distribution of Simnel cake, (and often with little posies of fresh flowers for Mother) traditionally with its distinct band of marzipan in the middle to remind us that we are still in the strictures of Lent. In the Church of England this Sunday has been observed to honour Mothers the true Mothers Day and today the Anglican Church honour Our Lady, mother of the Church, we honour Mother Church, our Mother Country and our dear earthly Mothers including those who are now in the closer presence of the Lord. We give thanks for their lives and the nurturing they have given us we pray for all who have the care and responsibility for children and may children everywhere know the love of God, their heavenly father in their lives. May we all know the love of God in our lives as he has called each of us to be His children.

My Dear Friends, It was a delight to see you all last Tuesday. Thank you, Kurt, for the beauty of your playing today. You took us on a journey through our Lord's Passion and Death and through to his Resurrection. Your choice of music was most appropriate being Lent, your playing was superb, and your generosity of spirit was infectious and everyone who came to your recital left it a better person for having been there. You are welcome at St. Paul's anytime. Thank you, Sheryl, for organizing today's recital and the whole recital programme for the year. The recitals bring profound joy to all who attend them and I am grateful to you for your dedication to this programme in particular and for everything else that you do to enhance our worship at St. Paul's throughout the year. I wonder if you have the time and energy to prepare an article for this week's pew sheet about today's recital please? It would great if you could please. Thank you. Thank you, Jane, Mary, and Bob, for preparing and serving today's magnificent refreshments after the recital. The refreshments were a wonderful treat for everyone and topped off the day in a very special way. Thank you, Rosemary, for setting everything up for the refreshments. This was very kind of you to do this for us. Thank you, Peter and Rodney, for ensuring that both organs behaved (mostly). The humidity made playing a bit tricky at times but Kurt handled both organs with consummate skill. All in all it has was a great occasion and I am grateful to you all for helping to make it so. I look forward to sharing our journey through Lent and Holy Week as we remember and give thanks for our Lord's great sacrifice and as we celebrate his resurrection on Easter Day and each day thereafter. May the God who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead breathe new life into our world and into the Parish. I look forward to seeing you all again soon. With my love and thanks. Peace, James

My very special thanks to Jeremy Southwood for directing St Paul's Choir in my absence. He is a most capable and dedicated musician. I know you all appreciated his contribution to the liturgy through his leadership and the fine singing of the Choir. Thank you, Jeremy. Sheryl Southwood Director of Music Well known Sydney organist, Kurt Ison, was our first performer in 2017 Lunchtime Recitals. A performer, teacher and composer, Kurt celebrated J S Bach s 332nd birthday with a beautiful spiritual journey of the Lutheran liturgy. As I mentioned after his recital, Kurt s love for, and of Bach s organ music, was palpable. He chose to perform on both the Walcker and Davidson organs. His registration was sensitively planned, with his musicianship shining throughout his recital. Here is a reminder of his programme: Trio Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier - Dearest Jesu, we are here BWV754 Transcriptions - the much-loved Air on the G string BWV1068 and likewise Sinfonia from Cantata BWV106 'Actus Tragicus' - God's time is best From the Clavierübung Part III Christ unser Herr, zum Jordan kam BWV684 - Christ our Lord came to the river Jordan and Dies sind die heil gen zehn Gebot BWV679 - These are the holy ten Commandments that our Lord God gave us. Kurt concluded the recital with the not very well known Prelude and Fugue in A Major BWV536.The brevity of the Prelude and the dance-like feeling of the fugue made this an ideal finale to the recital. I am sure Kurt knows how appreciative we all were; as someone commented, a wonderful opportunity to hear our organs, to fill the Church with restrained grandeur. What joy he brought to each of us!

Thank you, to you, our audience, for your continued support of Music at St Paul's. My thanks to Fr James, Rosemary King, Jane, Mary, Bob and Margaret Whittaker, for their contribution to another successful afternoon. Sheryl Southwood Director of Music If you would like to make a donation to the Parish for the upkeep and maintenance of the Heritage building it can be done through the National Trust. Cheques can be made out to: National Trust of Australia (NSW) St Paul s Anglican Church Burwood Or Direct Credit to the above name with bank account details: Westpac BSB: Account number: Branch: 275 George Street Sydney NSW

Yesterday, Fr James officiated at the wedding of David Edmund Brock and Kirsty Anne McKirdy. We pray God s blessing upon them as they begin their lives together. We take the opportunity to congratulate Pam Brock and Ray Brock on their son and daughter-in-law s wedding. Collection given at St Paul s on Sunday 19th of March: $2066 Other collection given: Parish Pantry: $90 Total: $2156 Thank you for responding to God s generous love. Tickets are now available for the Mother's Day Raffle. $2 each or 3 for $5. We don't sing or say the "Alleluias" in response to the Gospel Acclamation during Lent but rather we use the more subdued Antiphon after the priest/deacon says the Gospel Acclamation. The Lenten response is: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory. Amen. Each Sunday in Lent we will receive an ABM Lenten Envelope which we may use to make a weekly contribution to various aspects of the work that ABM does in Australian remote areas and overseas on behalf of the local parishes as part of the outreach of the Anglican Church. Please place your contribution in the Envelope and return via the Collection Bag. (If you require a receipt for Tax purposes please post direct to ABM as instructed on the envelope.) Lenten Envelopes will also be available for Good Friday and Easter Day.

There has been a lot happening behind the scenes since I wrote last. The village of Gyachchok has been busy rebuilding. Their electricity has been restored and the village is slowly taking shape again. Sanitation has been restored. This village has a school attended by its own children and children from the surrounding regions. They require the building of twenty two classrooms, eleven of which have been promised leaving another eleven to be built. Rising Nepal is hoping to make a substantial contribution towards these classrooms. But this year our work will centre on a teaching project in partnership with SMD school in Kathmandu. This commenced in November last year when Barbara Stone, a former Principal of MLC School, Burwood, and Educational Consultant; Shirley Blair, Director of SM, visited eight different schools in the Sydney Metropolitan Area. Some were IB schools, some were boarding school, some co-ed and some single sex schools all schools with a strong service background. We were looking for creative and experienced teachers who specialise in late primary, early high school years to partner with an SMD teacher of similar interests. Our teachers will travel to Nepal in December this year to work alongside their partner teacher in Kathmandu. In the meantime they will meet with Barbara at regular intervals throughout the year to undergo a training program as to how best to lead from the side. This will be a culturally sensitive program whereby it is hoped that the group will become fully self sufficient by the time they arrive in Nepal, creating a model which we believe will become a sustainable model for the future. We hope you will follow this project as the year progresses.

We will meet at public bus stop on the corner of Duff Street opposite the church at 8:45am at Burwood (Bus leaves promptly at 9.00am). Cost is $45. This trip will navigate the Hills District. 19 Resurrection. On Tuesday evenings through Lent we will be gathering to share our Lenten Study. We are using Rowan William's excellent book Being Christian: Baptism, Bible, Eucharist, Prayer and copies are available so that you can read ahead. The study is open to all in the Parish, especially as an introduction to Anglicanism for new Christians (particularly for those being prepared for Confirmation) and as a refresher for those who have been on the journey of faith, hope, and love for a while. The Tuesday evening Lenten Study is held in the Rectory begins at 7.30 p.m. so that those returning from work can come and join in and then head home for dinner. Likewise, being at this time means that it won't be a late evening (the studies will last for one hour) for those who don't want to drive in the evening. We are trying to find a time that suits most people. The Lenten Study is held in the Rectory on Tuesday nights at 7.30 p.m. After Easter, we are preparing another series of studies on death and dying that will involve a whole series of discussions led by those with experience in such matters as: Contemplating one's own death (momento mori), caring for someone with a terminal illness, caring for elderly or infirm family and friends, being bereaved, being an executor, and arranging a funeral with difficult families, etc. Friday 21 April at 7.00pm in the Large Hall Manjia s Piano Recital Saturday 22 April at 4.30pm in the Large Hall Piano Recital Performance By Jeremy Bell Our Regional Bishop, The Right Reverend Dr. Michael Stead, will be with us on Pentecost Sunday the 4th of June, 2017, and we hope to have a Confirmation Service that day at the 9.30 a.m. Eucharist. Are you, or anyone that you know, Please come to journey with Christ through his Passion, Death, and

interested in being Confirmed, Received into the Anglican Communion, or Baptized? Please speak with Fr. James, Fr Michael, or Rosemary if you are, or anyone that you know is, interested in being Confirmed, Received into the Anglican Communion, or Baptized. 1 Samuel ; Psalm 23; Ephesians ; John In the gospel reading, we see Jesus correcting the worldview of his disciples who thought that sin was commensurate to deformity. The disciples were convinced that either the parents of the blind man or the blind man himself had sinned for him to be in that situation. Jesus corrects this philosophy by affirming that the blind man would manifest the works of God (v. 3). Every human being created in the image of God has a purpose and agenda of God to fulfil in this world. From this narrative, we are cautioned by Jesus not to wish people away but allow God to use them as he wills. If anything, you and I are works in progress, for God is not yet done with us. That is why Jesus in his manifesto in Luke 4.18 declares: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; [and] to set free the oppressed. God uses our limitations and challenges to create a better world that will honour and glorify him at all times and in all places. Pray that God will give us grace to see his ministry in others and the will of God in the lives of people living with disabilities. That we shall be a shoulder for the less fortunate and for people living with disabilities to lean on. Give thanks for all the sources of spiritual refreshment in your life.
