2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at July 1, 2018 Notes from the Pastor Notes from Deacon Fred What The Church Teaches: SAME-SEX MARRIAGE Isn t It Unjust Discrimination To Deny Marriage To Homosexual Persons? The answer to that question is NO. Granting legal status to homosexual or same sex unions would be unjust. This is because it would be based on a falsehood. Marriage and same-sex unions are different realities. It would be wrong to ignore this difference and pretend that there is no difference. To deny legal status to same sex or homosexual unions does not deny the dignity of homosexual people. It is a to give witness to the fact of what marriage is and isn t. The Church insists that even though homosexual acts are gravely immortal, we as Church must defend the dignity of homosexual persons. This is why we invite them to seek a relationship with Christ through a life of chaste love for others. There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God s plan for marriage and family. Marriage is holy, while homosexual acts go against the natural mortal law. Arise! Do not be afraid, just have faith. These were words Jesus offered to the synagogue official named Jairus, whose 12 year old daughter just died, cut right to the heart of Jairus. In his extreme sorrow, Jesus reaches out to Jairus, the hand of hope and the heart of wisdom. In his great loss, Jairus did not reject the invitation of Jesus. Jairus in his sorrow, his poverty of spirit laid bare before the world, grasped the hand of hope and embraced the heart of wisdom and followed Jesus to where his daughter lie. Jesus spoke to Jairus daughter lying dead and said little girl arise, with these words spoken life returned, joy returned, tears were shed and hearts were opened. Possibly the girl s parents were feeling that just maybe.. just maybe they were special.. that they were loved and were part of someone much greater than themselves our Creator! In our moments of great struggle, sorrow or loss, don t we too look to our Lord and reach out to Him in our need? In those moments we come to realize just how really dependent we are, how poor in spirit we are and how vulnerable we are. If only we could talk to him or touch him, surely he would help us. Perhaps the answer we receive in prayer might be Do not be afraid, just have faith. Perhaps as we surrender ourselves to our Lord and allow him to lead us to where he wants us to go, we will find healing in the help we are seeking. Perhaps part of our healing is in our giving to others, of our time, talent or treasure. In the hospitals of Haiti one can help feed the hungry children spoonfuls of meal; the children are so malnourished they can t feed themselves the children are so malnourished their arms are as thin as two of our fingers put together. Our struggles seem so minor compared to those children. When we see the commercials of the children suffering from cancer being helped by St. Jude s hospital, our struggles seems so minor compared to theirs. In our reaching out to these, God s children, we find peace and healing in our lives don t we? When we reach out to these children, the hand of hope and the heart of wisdom are present there and perhaps a quiet, loving voice whispers to them and to us Arise! In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, Why? This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, Why? At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: Hear, O L, and have pity on me; O L, be my helper. Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. TODAY S READINGS First Reading God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24). How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Battlefield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. Pero, qué es lo que implica eso? Una de las implicaciones es que, tal como escuchamos en la primera lectura de hoy, Dios creó a los seres humanos para vivir eternamente. Después de todo, Dios vive eternamente. Desafortunadamente, la muerte entró en el mundo cuando Adán y Eva sucumbieron a la tentación y desobedecieron a Dios. Dios no hizo la muerte (Sabiduría 1, 13). Es así que tenemos un aliado en contra de la muerte. Nuestro Dios es el Dios de la vida. Jesús deja esto bien claro en el Evangelio. Hay una marcada diferencia entre la manera en que Jairo y la mujer abordan a Jesús. Jairo es uno de los jefes de la sinagoga y abordó a Jesús directamente. La mujer que había estado enferma por doce años lo abordó de manera subrepticia, no más tocando su manto. Lo más probable es que lo haya hecho así porque era considerada impura y hubiera hecho impuro también a Jesús. Pero tanto ella como la hija de Jairo fueron curadas. Aunque la forma de acercase a Jesús fue diferente, lo importante es que ambos se acercaron con fe. Talitá, kum!, le dice Jesús a la hija de Jairo, que pensaban estaba muerta, y se levantó. Estas palabras, que significan óyeme, niña, levántate, resuenan más allá de este pasaje del Evangelio (Marcos 5:41). Hay una organización de mujeres religiosas que luchan contra la trata de personas y prestan servicios a las víctimas y el nombre que escogieron para su organización es Talitha Kum. Lo tomaron de este pasaje, pues muchas de las víctimas son niñas y jovencitas más o menos de la edad de la hija de Jairo. El Papa Francisco, que repetidamente se ha expresado en contra de la trata de personas, visitó una de las casas de Talitha Kum durante su viaje a Colombia el año pasado. No olvidemos nunca que con la gracia de Dios tenemos el poder de rescatar a alguien que ha sido secuestrada y explotada. Pregunta de la Semana Cómo afecta la manera en que vivo el saber que Dios es el Dios de la vida y no de la muerte? Tengo la suficiente valentía como para hacerle frente a alguien que no respeta el derecho humano básico de la vida?

Saturday, October 27, 2018 The Diocese of St. Petersburg was established on June 17, 1968, and Bishop Gregory Parkes has announced that a large-scale music and faith festival will be held in Tampa to celebrate the momentous occasion of our 50th anniversary. Vacation Bible School!!!! Who: Children entering grades K 5 this upcoming school year. When: July 16 th 20 th 5:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. What: Our theme this year focuses on Pope Francis encyclical On Care for Our Common Home, as well as related Scripture and Church teaching. Children will learn to care for all of God s creation. We will present a solid biblical basis for caring for creation, in a way that children can easily understand. We will model care for God s creation and will teach children to continue this care well after their week of VBS has ended. Where: In our Parish Hall. Other Details: The cost is $20.00 per child. If you have financial concerns, please let us know. We don t want anyone left out due to the cost. Donations may be made at St. Joan of Arc (back hallway of Church). Some items needed are: disposable razors, shaving cream, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, shampoo, denture cleaner, denture grip, foot powder, new socks, new underwear, playing cards, or books. RECYCLING UPDATE: In addition to NEWS- PAPER and ALUMINUM CANS, we are now recycling CARDBOARD, PHONE BOOKS, MAGA- ZINES and OLD MAIL. There are New Blue Bins (1 at the Maintenance Garage and 1 at the side of the Hall). Please place your recyclables in the Blue Bins (ALUMINUM CANS will still go in the shed to the right of the garage). Please break down your cardboard boxes to allow for more room. NOTE: NO PLAS- TIC OR TRASH PLEASE. Thank you to our 100% Volunteer Grounds Crew for getting this for us and for ALL you do! All recycling proceeds go to support our Grounds Crew needs. The Rosary is prayed in the sanctuary every First Saturday of the month immediately after the 9AM Mass. Come join in and learn about the may graces promised by Our Lady of Fatima to those who embrace this devotion for 5 consecutive First Saturdays. July 7th is our next monthly rosary.
