2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at Notes from the Pastor A note from your Parish Council The St. Joan of Arc Parish Council would like to extend a grateful thank you to the following parish members: Fred Holman and Tony Infurchia, for their beautiful woodworking, making the entrance desks for both the East and West Narthex as well as the Tree of Life table in the Deacon Lee Hinderscheid Library. Their talents and time are a true gift from God. We are so blessed to have these two men who are giving of their time and talents to beautify our parish. The Parish Council members cannot thank them enough for all they have contributed. We also want to extend a special thank you to Richard Deso, for the three beautiful paintings created for display in our parish vestibule at the main entrance to our sanctuary. Richard has worked for many hours creating these and his work will be appreciated by all who enter our parish for many years to come. Richard took an idea and put his love and dedication to St. Joan of Arc into these paintings to make this idea a reality. I hope you will all take time to admire these three works of art. We are a dedicated parish of family members who not only devote their time and talents but have a true love for St. Joan of Arc and for God. We welcome into our Holy Roman Catholic Church Bodie Carsillo Mateo Alexander Morera Ryker Carsillo Baptized on October 27th, November 18, 2018 Notes from Deacon Fred Oh Yeah There are times in our lives when we witness tragedy and may have experienced it ourselves, when we believe the sun is darkened and the stars in the sky somehow are missing. The tragedy which just happened in a synagogue at Pittsburgh would be the most recent. As God s children we know He will reveal Himself to us in some way to remind us that we are His and we are not abandoned. There was a young man born in New Orleans in extreme poverty, abandoned by his parents, and raised by his grandmother until he was 5 years old, then returned to his mother. His neighborhood was so dangerous they nicknamed it the Battlefield. God blessed him with a Jewish family that treated him as one of their own, so much so he wore a Star of David proudly around his neck for the rest of his life, even though he was raised Baptist. That family encouraged and supported his musical talent which allowed him to sing on street corners to help support his mother and grandmother. He had a very difficult time in life but found solace in his music. Every time I close my eyes blowing that trumpet of mine, I look right into the heart of New Orleans, giving me something to live for. Despite his difficult life he knew joy. He knew hope. He was eventually baptized Catholic and met two popes in his lifetime. He was a strong witness to God s saving grace and His promise of salvation. Was it a coincidence his last musical hit vocal contained these lyrics: I see trees of green, red roses too I see them bloom for me and you and I think to myself what a wonderful world. I see skies of blue and clouds of white the bright blessed day, the dark sacred night and I think to myself what a wonderful world. The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky are also on the faces of people going by. I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do They're really saying I love you. I hear babies crying, I watch them grow; they'll learn much more than I'll never know, and I think to myself what a wonderful world. Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world. 3 November 18, 2018 T M, S.J (View this bulletin on-line at A P, This Sunday s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one s birthday to life, the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. Rev. Se logra la justicia solamente después de la muerte en el juicio de Dios? O acaso podríamos encontrar la justicia aquí y ahora, en nuestras decisiones y en nuestras victorias morales? Daniel termina la descripción de su visión apocalíptica con estas palabras: los que enseñan a muchos la justicia, resplandecerán como estrellas por toda la eternidad (Daniel 12, 3). Aquellas personas que trabajan por la justicia no siempre lograrán su cometido, pero serán por siempre como un faro para aquellos otros que vendrán después. Puede que no se encuentre la justicia aquí y ahora, pero cuando trabajamos en pos de ella y llevamos a otras personas en esa dirección son cosas que, según la revelación de Daniel, tendrán su recompensa. En medio de la oscuridad y la angustia de los últimos tiempos, tanto Jesús como Daniel prometen una recompensa para los que Dios ha elegido. Daniel dice que aquellos que están escritos en el libro se salvarán. Jesús le dice a los discípulos que los elegidos serán congregados por los ángeles. A pesar de lo destructivo que parezca el final de los tiempos Dios permanece más fuerte que ninguna otra potencia que acometa a la tierra. Dios puede rescatar a todos los que han sido tenidos por dignos. No podemos saber cuándo terminará el mundo, así como tampoco sabemos cuándo llegará el final de nuestra propia vida terrenal. Por lo tanto, siempre debemos estar preparados, pero nos debe consolar el sacrificio redentor que Jesús hizo en la cruz. Tal como escuchamos en la carta a los hebreos, aquellos a los que Dios ha santificado, los ha hecho perfectos para siempre.
