(Pope John Paul II Redemptor Hominis, 15) Christians Can Bring a Soul into the Fabric of the Online World In an ever changing world where updated software and upgraded hardware is used to improve the world, it is good to remember that one thing never changes. While God is not flashy or loud and will not poke you when you have not checked in with Him for some time, He is always there. No matter where you are, God desires to be present in your life. God wants to commune with you and others through you. As we use the latest technology in communication, one thing is certain, we will never waste time trying to seek a personal relationship with the Lord. Connection to Him is the one and only constant. Our relationship with God will never depend on a signal, a service provider, or a monthly payment. Christ will never give us or the world a message that is obsolete. TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and self-indulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul s heart; he wrote to them sometimes with many tears (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. The glory of the city Paul knew well has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries. Rev. St. Mark tells us that when Jesus entered the house of Simon (Peter) and Andrew, He healed Simon s mother-inlaw who was suffering with a fever. Then later that evening He healed many who were ill or possessed by demons. Following His miraculous healing activities, Jesus went off to a deserted place where he prayed. In doing His Father s will by healing and praying, Jesus set a great example for us. When we pray, we are given the spiritual energy and direction that we need in order to do the will of God. Let us take the time each day to sit quietly with the Lord and first thank Him for all that we have: life, health, family and friends, a loving parish community and freedom to pursue our dreams. Then, in gratitude, we need to open ourselves up to the will of God because He certainly has work for us to do for Him and for our brothers and sisters in need. Quiet prayer is an outstanding way to discern how and what to give back to God. What do we mean when we say that through our gratitude we should share our talent? Just exactly what do we mean by talent? Talent is any act of generosity from helping an elderly lady put groceries into her car to organizing and running a charitable organization such as the St. Vincent DePaul Society. There are many things we can do right here at St. Joan of Arc. Think of all the times we have been helped or prayed for by the members of this parish. Maybe it s time for pay back. Giving to our Parish should have a high priority among those charities we choose to help. Clearly, St. Joan of Arc Parish needs our financial help. If we weren t able to make a financial commitment to our Annual Pastoral Appeal, let us consider increasing our Offertory contributions where possible. An attitude of gratitude should always be accompanied by our dare to share. It is in giving that we receive. St. Francis (Deacon Lee is ill, please keep him in your prayers.)

This is the Council that updated our church in our modern world. Pope St John XXIII called the Second Vatican Council, a significant event which, to this day, continues to affect the very flow of contemporary human history. Set against a dramatic backdrop of world events, The Faithful Revolution: Vatican II is the first filmed series to document this council, its decisions, and its profound impact on all of humanity. Told through the eyes of many men and women who witnessed this event firsthand, The Faithful Revolution is an important historical documentary for all Catholics. 6 Page 6 (View this bulletin on-line at February 4, 2018 CCW FEBRUARY Meeting Notice The Council of Catholic Women will hold their February General Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018 beginning with the 9 AM Mass. As usual, there will be a light Continental Breakfast followed by the Business Meeting. We will end the day with our Annual, Traditional meat free lunch of Soup and Bread. The purpose of this lunch is to put us in a Lenten mindset and to remember those who are less fortunate. Ash Wednesday, first day of Lent, is on February 14 The Mass intention will be for the repose of the soul of Frank Sciorra, deceased husband of CCW member Mary Sciorra. The Blood Mobile will be here at St. Joan of Arc on Sunday February 11. Please give if you can, you could save a life! The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry THANKS all our Parishioners who donated to our Holiday Plea this year and filled our weekend Food containers at Church. Because of your generous participation we served 20,468 neighbors with quality food baskets this past year. 1,023,400 pounds of food was distributed in 2017 and our 3 churches contributed 28,000 pounds, and all who came to us for Thanksgiving and Christmas, received extra packages with all the trimmings for a wonderful meal. Our toy program distributed 20 family gift packages plus gifts to 420 children including the forgotten teenagers. Please know that all your donations only go to feeding our neighbors in need, as you wished. Join us and be a volunteer. The Food Pantry is Blessed to have your wonderful support during the holidays and throughout the year. May God Bless each of you for "Helping us Help Others.
