2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at January 13, 2019 Notes from the Pastor Celebrating a Catholic Christmas Water and Light s In the old Church calendar, the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 marks the end of the Christmas season. February 2 is also called Candlemas. On this day candles are blessed as a symbol of Simeon of the infant Jesus to the Gentiles, in the Gospel of Luke. This celebration is also a way to bring the light of Christ home to burn all year round. The Christmas tree and crèche in St. Peter s Square in Rome remains on display until Candlemas Day. The Baptism of the Lord, which is celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany, commemorates the last day of the Christmas Season in the present Church calendar. In the scripture reading that day, we hear the account of the Father revealing the divinity of Jesus at His baptism in the Jordan River. On this day we also celebrate our own baptism, our new birth in Christ. It is also our inclusion in His body, the Church. We become Christians for the very first time, at our baptism. For questions call: Rosalie Montemagno at Notes from Deacon Fred Grace Our confirmation class recently asked what grace was all about. What is it? Why do we seek it?. and what stuff is it made of? St. Paul talks about grace all the time.. but what is it? Simply put, Grace is the power of love. Perfect love introduced to humanity at our Lord s Baptism when the Father expresses His love for His Son and the Holy Spirit completing the perfect loving relationship we call Trinity. It is our God s Grace that embraces us despite our faults.. It is God s Grace that invites us into that relationship which brings peace and joy and celebrates each of us for who we are, His children. We are part of the Trinitarian family because God so loved us, He sent His only Son to invite us into His family, seeking the good in each of us and calling us to be what we are striving toward and meant to be. With the help of His Grace, he again begins His walk with us and we begin our walk with Him. As we begin another year of living our relationship with our Lord let us ask for His grace in forgiving our faults, in transforming our lives and our hearts to live his Gospel with courage, humility and Grace! 3 January 13, 2019 T M, S.J (View this bulletin on-line at A P, CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, Psalm The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29) or Psalm 104. Second Reading Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7. Gospel A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22). Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. La gracia de Dios que hemos recibido, el consuelo de conocer el sufrimiento redentor de Cristo, el Espíritu Santo que recibimos en el bautismo, todo eso nos llama a llevar una vida de bondad y santidad con la esperanza de la vida eterna con Dios. Existe una diferencia sutil entre la narración de san Lucas sobre el bautismo de Jesús y las narraciones de los otros tres evangelistas. Lucas dice que después de que Jesús fue bautizado por Juan y antes de que el Espíritu Santo descendiera sobre él en forma de paloma, Jesús dedicó un tiempo para orar. Desde el comienzo de su ministerio hasta su muerte en la cruz Jesús se comunicaba con su Padre por medio de la oración. Jesús le enseñó a sus discípulos a dirigirse al Padre mediante la oración.
