2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at Notes from the Pastor APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION Rejoice and Be Glad! The Call To Holiness Snares of the Devil Seeking holiness has its challenges. Pope Francis states that the Christian Life is a constant battle. We need strength and courage to withstand the temptation of the devil and to proclaim the Gospel. The challenges of mankind come from the world; from a worldly mentality that would deceive us and leave us dull and mediocre, and from our own failings and weaknesses. However, our main struggle is with the devil. Pope Francis tells us that the devil is not a myth, a representation, a symbol, a figure of speech or an idea. If we do not see the devil as a real foe or enemy, we can grow to become careless and let down our guard. The devil does not need to possess us. He poisons us with the venom of hatred, desolation, envy and vice. The cultivation of all that is good, progress in the spiritual life and growth in love are the best counterbalance to evil. Discernment To seek holiness and avoid the temptations of the devil, we need to discern God s plan for us. Discernment is a grace. It is also a gift of spiritual wisdom we seek from God to recognize His will. At the same time we want to avoid temptations that can lead us down a wrong path. Discernment calls for a prayerful reflection as well as a willingness to listen. We must also be obedient to the teachings of Jesus Christ found in the Gospels as well as the teaching authority of the Church. Pope Francis also tells us, discernment is not about discovering what more we can get out of this life, but about the mission entrusted to us at our baptism. As a result, our mission is to be holy. As St. Paul states, This is the will of God, your holiness (1Thes 4:3). Adapted by Catholic News Service HELP!!!! HELP!!!! HELP!!!! Our Grounds Crew need help on either Wednesday and/or Friday mornings at 6:30 AM. We need someone who can fix lawn mowers, people to pull weeds, to trim around our trees, and there s a lot of them!!! We volunteer to keep our church beautiful, we volunteer for the camaraderie, we volunteer because we are proud of St. Joan s and want to take care of our grounds. August 26, 2018 Notes from Deacon Fred Ordinary Holiness Tim and Julie Smith wrote a song years ago which introduced to those listening, a way of living in Christ s love called Ordinary Holiness. It reminds us of who we are and who we are called to be in living our day to day lives... how important each moment of our day is, and how important we are to each other. The song... Ordinary Holiness, in the sacred day to day. Where we live and love and labor, as we gather here to pray. Humble God of all simplicity, help every heart prepare to heed the call of holiness and hear the call to prayer. Kitchen table gospel is lived in every home where families take the time to kneel and pray. Fathers who encourage, mothers who embrace, friends who listen carefully reveal God s loving face. Voices that are gentle, words that welcome home, meals that feed the body and the soul. Honoring the family and cherishing each life. Strengthening the Sacrament of husband and wife. We are not called to do great things, but to lead the life that Jesus taught us, a life of commitment and love to our God and to each other. The kitchen table is the place where we learn and live family. We support each other, listen to each other, laugh and cry with each other. Pray with each other. Our day to day ordinary life becomes extraordinary and special in the relationships we develop, the choices we make, the challenges we face, and the gifts we share. Knowing that we are children of God, there is always something special to look forward to. We don t know what God will reveal to us on any particular day, but we know if we look for it, it will be there, and we will not be disappointed. Perhaps it will be a new friend, a beautiful sunrise or sunset, a new insight, a new calling only God knows. Living a life of ordinary holiness is truly a blessing, not only to us, but to those around us. In order to enter a life such as this we all must make the choice to do so. We need to consciously and deliberately make the choice to remember who we are and to follow the path of ordinary holiness. and we will have a wonderful day!

When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the households of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many strangers every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are next door to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a household that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God. The city is sweltering, and in a pre-air-conditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given extraterritorial rights, meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican observatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. There s still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don t have a personal castle in the hills! Rev. Cuando Josué les pide que se comprometan con el Dios que van a servir, la gente responde inmediatamente que no van a abandonar al Señor. El Señor los ha sacado de la esclavitud, les ha hecho milagros y los ha protegido en su caminar hacia la tierra prometida. Están agradecidos por todo lo que el Señor ha hecho por ellos y permanecen fieles al Señor en la tierra de otros dioses. La segunda lectura puede ser problemática, pero es importante no pasar por alto la analogía que san Pablo trata de hacer. Cristo es para la Iglesia, dice san Pablo, lo que el esposo es para su esposa. En otras palabras, el amor que Cristo le tiene a su pueblo es como el amor que las parejas casadas se tienen mutuamente. Ambos suponen sacrificio. Es de esperar que el esposo se sacrifique por su esposa, por ejemplo cuando deja atrás a sus padres. Jesús dio el modelo de este sacrificio cuando se hizo carne y vino a este mundo y después cuando dio su vida por el mundo. Durante todo el mes de agosto hemos escuchado pasajes del Evangelio según san Juan en los cuales Jesús le dice a sus discípulos que él es el pan de la vida. Ellos le oyeron decir: Yo soy el pan vivo, que ha bajado del cielo y el que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna (Juan 6, 51, 54). También nosotros le hemos escuchado decir eso, pero no todos están de acuerdo. Muchos dijeron: Ese modo de hablar es intolerable, quién puede admitir eso? (Juan 6, 60). Muchos de sus discípulos se echaron para atrás y ya no querían andar con él (Juan 6, 66). Jesús retó a sus discípulos y no todos pudieron aceptarlo. Podemos nosotros? Pregunta de la Semana Es hora de definir nuestra posición. Puedo decir como Pedro, creo? O como Josué, serviré al Señor? Cómo les puedo demostrar a los demás cuál es mi posición? Register also for EDGE and Confirmation. Call the Office for more details. CHILDREN WHO NEED SACRAMENTS We offer several programs to meet all the needs of your children. If you have a child who has reached 7 years old and still does not have their Sacrament of Baptism, First Eucharist or Reconciliation, register your children as soon as possible. Classes for these children began Tuesday evening, August 21st at 5:45 pm. 27 th ANNUAL ETHNIC FESTIVAL OCTOBER 18 th 21 st JEWELRY WANTED Second Hand Rose is a fabulous collection of items in good usable condition that are donated by parishioners and friends and then sold during the Ethnic Festival. AT THIS TIME, WE ARE ONLY ACCEPTING JEWELRY. You can drop off jewelry at the Welcome Desk or Parish Office anytime during regular business hours. PLEASE, ONLY JEWELRY AT THIS TIME. Miscellaneous items will be collected later. Please do not bring other items to the church or parish hall before Thursday, October 11 th. Now is the time to rummage through items in your home and garage that you may no longer need, but are items that someone else can use. All donated items should be clean, in good working condition and, something that someone would want to purchase and use. Would you like to sing for the Lord! We always have room for more singers! Mass Choir rehearsals will begin for this season on Wednesday, September 19th at 6:30 pm in the Church. If you would like to join us please plan to come sing with us! ETHNIC FESTIVAL - October 18th through the 21st The 27th Annual Ethnic Festival is fast approaching and is in need of volunteers to help in various areas of the set-up and on the days of the Festival. You are invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday, September 11th at 7 p.m. in the hall. If you have any questions, Check it out! Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute-- JUST 7 Saturdays LPMI Year of Discernment The Year of Discernment segment of the Institute is designed to accommodate men and women of the diocese involved in or interested in being selected for ecclesial ministry. The Year of Discernment or a documented equivalent is a requirement for acceptance into the three-year formal program. The goal of the Year of Discernment is to identify persons with leadership capabilities interested in and able to pursue the more intense three-year element of the Institute. A secondary goal is to create in adults of the diocese an interest in and a desire for on-going faith formation. The Year of Discernment consists of seven all day Saturday sessions (one per month September through March) and one Day of Reflection in April. The Day of Reflection is a requirement for continuance in the Institute. The Year of Discernment will introduce participants to the basic theology of the Catholic Church and the Christian's personal call to maturity, holiness, community, and ministry. It will follow the guidelines of the pastoral letter of the United States Bishops, Called and Gifted for the Third Millenium, and the document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord (Colaboradores en la viña del Señor. Benediction and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is always First Thursday of the month from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Please join us on September 6th. The Rosary is prayed in the sanctuary every First Saturday of the month immediately after the 9AM Mass. Come join in and learn about the many graces promised by Our Lady of Fatima to those who embrace this devotion for 5 consecutive First Saturdays. Please join us on September 8th.
