2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at September 16, 2018 Notes from the Pastor What The Church Teaches: Pornography The Real Impact The greatest danger of pornography is its moral damage. The Catechism of the Catholic Church condemns pornography because it perverts the conjugal act. The conjugal act is the intimate giving of husband and wife to each other (CCC 2354). It can also undermine the basis of marriage and relationships. Pornography can create the delusion that every sexual desire no matter how disgusting should be fulfilled. Instead of being an expression of self-giving love, the sex act is reduced to a trivial source of private entertainment. This attitude is directly opposed to the Catholic teaching that each and every individual is created in the image and likeness of God. At the same time, the conjugal act within the Sacrament of marriage is blessed by God. At the same time, pornography can lead to violence. And the sins against justice. It does great injury to the dignity of its participants. This includes actors, vendors, as well as the public. This is because each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others (CCC 2354). Many times pornography can lead to masturbation. Masturbation is the deliberate stimulation of the genital sex organs in order to seek sexual pleasure. The Catholic Church has always taught that masturbation is an an intrinsically and gravely disordered action because the deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose. We volunteer to keep our church beautiful, we volunteer for the camaraderie, we volunteer because we are proud of St. Joan s and want to take care of our grounds. Please call the Parish Office if you can HELP!!!!! Notes from Deacon Fred The Comeback Kid! I came across an article written by Rick McDaniel of the Huffington Post talking about comebacks. He writes that a comeback will always begin with change. That change happens when we get a new attitude, when we decide that our way of thinking is going to change - a change of heart. He writes that a change of heart happens when we choose to be committed and that this commitment will change our future. The people we meet on our journey of faith are pilgrims in search of a better relationship with our Lord. We are not perfect and we all have had moments of being humbled by our mistakes or shortfalls and sometimes we wonder how God could possibly love us given all this stuff. But He does. And He really loves comebacks. Remember the prodigal son? The Apostle Peter was such a man. A simple fisherman, decided to follow Jesus, and began to appreciate who Jesus was and what Jesus meant to him. When Jesus asked who do you say that I am, Peter did not hesitate.. he spoke from the heart You are the Messiah he said. But then Jesus began to teach him what Messiah was all about to suffer for us.. to sacrifice for us and to show the Creator s love for us, through His Son. God s message of Justice and Mercy held up on the cross and glorified on the third day. Peter did not understand and tried to counsel Jesus to turn it down a little and Jesus turned to him and told Satan to get behind him. Peter must have been devastated. He knew he had a journey of change and discovery to make to understand to comeback. He made a commitment to follow Jesus even though he did not understand where it would take him - Lord to whom shall we go, you alone have the words of eternal life - and we know the rest of Peter s story. Our story is very similar isn t it? Our commitment to Jesus, even though not perfect, invites change, invites service to one another, allows us to persevere on this journey despite ridicule, or challenge.. because the Lord is our help. Sometimes we fall.. but we always know that the Lord is there waiting for us to comeback to change to grow - We are his children. the Comeback Kids!

3 September 16, 2018 T M, S.J (View this bulletin on-line at A P, LISTENING AND RESPONDING There are three interwoven themes in today s readings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to find it. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God s promptings will lead us in the right way. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Andrew Kim Taegŏn and Paul Chŏng Ha-sang and Companions Friday: St. Matthew Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In this country, we don t name our churches The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church, but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn t take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called Adam and Eve after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of Midvalley City comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. Pero, de qué manera? En este pasaje Isaías no le pide ayuda a Dios para vencer a sus enemigos. Ni tampoco recurrió a Dios para que cesara su sufrimiento, sino que [endureció su] rostro como roca y lo aceptó. Isaías, más bien, acude a Dios con la confianza de que está haciendo la voluntad de Dios; sabe que está en lo cierto, porque está haciendo la voluntad de Dios. Él acude a Dios para pedir la fortaleza a fin de soportar los abusos que recibe, pues sabe que su sacrificio vale la pena. Este pasaje de Isaías es el mismo que escuchamos cada año en el Domingo de Ramos. Es fácil de apreciar por qué se pone esta lectura junto con la de la Pasión, pues Isaías se asemeja a Cristo en cuanto que acepta el abuso que recibe de aquellos que se oponen a la voluntad de Dios. Pero este pasaje nos prepara también para este Evangelio, ya que Jesús está preparando a sus discípulos para su muerte; aunque no le va bien, pues termina reprimiendo a Pedro: Apártate de mí, Satanás (Marcos 8, 33). Pedro acaba de identificar a Jesús como el Cristo (en hebreo, el Mesías). Sin embargo, Jesús sabe que él no es la clase de Mesías que todos esperan, el que vencerá al gobierno romano y llevará al pueblo a la victoria. En vez, él es el Mesías que describe Isaías en la primera lectura, el que sufrirá por su pueblo, el que tendrá que vencer la tentación de dejar que este cáliz pase. No en balde se refiere a Pedro como Satanás. La manera de pensar de Pedro es una tentación igual que lo fue la de Satanás en el desierto. Pregunta de la Semana De qué manera me niego a mí mismo? Cuál es la cruz que cargo en este momento de mi vida? Con la gracia de Dios, estoy dispuesto a cargarla? If you have any questions, please call Paul D'Aquisto at or Frank Mezzacapo at All parishioners are encouraged to attend the Festival. Faith Formation Donations Needed Faith Formation costs money to purchase books and supplies that our catechists need for the year. There are many families who cannot afford to send their children to Faith Formation. Please do not allow lack of funds to stand in the way of your children and grandchildren from coming to Faith Formation, EDGE or Confirmation. If you, as a parishioner, would like to donate money to help pay for families who cannot pay, please write your check to St. Joan of Arc and write on the envelope that it is to be used to pay fees for families bringing their children to Faith Formation. Thank you for your generosity. Knights of Columbus This Thursday, September 30th is our K of C Officers 7:00 pm in the Hall. On October 6th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm the Knights is hosting a S.J.O.A. Wine Tasting Festival and Silent Auction. The cost is $15.00 per person, which includes wine tasting, cheese, crackers and fruit. Paul Stegner, Grand Knight. Wine Tasting tickets are available after Masses and at the door of the event. Would you like to sing for the Lord! We always have room for more singers! Mass Choir rehearsals will begin for this season on Wednesday, September 19th at 6:30 pm in the Church. If you would like to join us please plan to come sing with us! AT THIS TIME, WE ARE ONLY ACCEPTING JEWELRY. You can drop off jewelry at the Welcome Desk or Parish Office anytime during regular business hours. PLEASE, ONLY JEWELRY AT THIS TIME. Miscellaneous items will be collected later. Please do not bring other items to the church or parish hall before Thursday, October 11 th. Now is the time to rummage through items in your home and garage that you may no longer need, but are items that someone else can use. All donated items should be clean, in good working condition and, something that someone would want to purchase and use. CHILDREN WHO NEED SACRAMENTS We offer several programs to meet all the needs of your children. If you have a child who has reached 7 years old and still does not have their Sacrament of Baptism, First Eucharist or Reconciliation, register your children as soon as possible. Classes for these children have begun. Altar flowers.. are given in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special day. Each week the Altar Flower Memorial is announced in our Parish Bulletin. To request your flowers, please come to the Parish Office during the week. Donation is $30. What does the Catholic Church teach about Morality?
