Reject the injustice of some possessing too much and others too little. Forgive and serve others from the heart. Heal pride and increase humility. Do not react immediately or harshly to the weaknesses and faults of those around us, but exercise patience and tenderness. Rejoices in the well-being of others. Do not try to control others, to follow their every step lest they escape our grip (115), Instead, trust and set free. Strive to discover your own road to happiness while allowing others to find theirs. Pray over past history and shortcomings. Accept ourselves, and our limitations, and even forgive ourselves and even forgive ourselves in order to have this same attitude towards others (107). Every day, reaffirming to be faithful, come what may in the course of the day (319). My advice is never to let the day end without making peace in the family. And how am I going to make peace? By getting down on my knees? No! Just by a small gesture, a little something and harmony within your family will be restored. Just a little caress, no words are necessary. But do not let the day end without making peace in your in your family (104). Adapted by Our Sunday Visitor: Libreria Editice Vaticana January 27, 2019 Notes from Deacon Fred Joyful Diversity Through Grace Today we begin.. with good news to those who need it the most the poor (in spirit). Liberty to those held captive, sight for those who have been blinded, freedom for those who have been oppressed. Each of us have experienced oppression, and confusion in our lives at one time or another. Because of our shortfalls or those of others, our freedom to become the persons we were meant to be are stifled and our growth held captive. But, Good News! This is a day of rejoicing, for we celebrate the good news that Jesus delivers. Through him we can be set free to grow in His love. His grace surrounds us as we begin to walk with Him anew. He knows each and every one of us, our gifts and our shortfalls. By His grace our gifts are blessings and our shortfalls forgiven. We are called not only to recognize and embrace Jesus in our lives but also in the lives of those walking beside us. St. Paul talks about the body of Christ as one body with many parts and that there is not one part greater than the others and each have gifts to share and work to do. Every part is valued. The Spirit working through each of us brings something special to the table and should be celebrated. Together, all the parts of the body can experience profound revelation. A married couple of many years faced the challenge of poor health. The wife was confined to her bed for years until she passed. The husband attended Mass frequently praying for her and others in need of prayer. She expressed frustration occasionally at her immobility, but used her time to pray for others and welcome visitors who would come to spend time with her. Her physical limitations held her body captive, but the Lord s grace freed her heart and soul to live the life that God intended her to live. She was filled with love and concern for others, without complaint of her situation but with a quiet joy difficult to describe. She was a valued member of our community part of the fabric and texture of our Parish. Each of us have stories of how God has worked in our lives. It is natural that we would want to share these with others, but, perhaps experiencing Christ s presence in others is the best gift of all. A good place to start our journey!

To judge by the words of Jesus in today s Gospel, it will be a year acceptable to the Lord. And Jesus surely didn t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the arrival of God s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, Today is holy... do not be sad, and do not weep. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God s word. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). Psalm Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life (Psalm 19). Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. You must pour your life out like Christ so that you may be filled with the light of his love. El episodio de Nehemías que escuchamos hoy ocurre después de que Esdras dirigiera un contingente del pueblo para su regreso a Jerusalén después del exilio. Es probable que ésta haya sido la primera vez que escucharan la palabra de Dios proclamada públicamente; por eso puede entenderse su comportamiento tan emotivo. Para la mayoría de nosotros se nos hace fácil, y tal vez por eso subestimamos, poder reunirnos a escuchar la palabra de Dios. Pero imaginémonos vivir en un tiempo y lugar donde no se nos permitiera esta experiencia de comunidad. Alegrémonos por la libertad que tenemos de venir juntos a alabar a Dios. La gente en la sinagoga de Nazaret también experimentaron una novedad ese día. Jamás habían oído a nadie decir: Hoy mismo se ha cumplido este pasaje de la Escritura que acaban de oír. Pero es que Jesús es la manifestación del que profetizó Isaías. Jesús estaba lleno del Espíritu, fue elegido por Dios, vino a llevar buenas noticias a los pobres, etcétera. Ahora consideremos esto: sabemos que cuando nos reunimos en nombre de Jesús, él se hace presente; por lo tanto, este pasaje de la Escritura que acabamos de oír se cumple para nosotros ahora y cada vez que nos reunimos para celebrar la Eucaristía. Lucas escribe que Jesús enseñó en las sinagogas de Galilea y que todos admiraban su sabiduría. Es más, a través de todo el Evangelio de Lucas la gente se dirige a Jesús frecuentemente como Maestro, lo cual es un título de respeto y de reconocimiento de su autoridad. También implica que la gente aprendía de él. Los maestros de las escuelas católicas tienen un gran modelo en Jesús y están llamados a cultivar y proteger a los niños que enseñan, además de educarlos.
