2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at May 27, 2018 Notes from the Pastor Notitas del Diácono José What the Church teaches about Same-Sex Marriage People throughout our country demand for legal recognition of same-sex marriage have grown louder and more insistent. Debates about same-sex marriage have intensified. This has divided the legislature, courts, communities and even families. Where and why does the Catholic Church stand on this topic. What Exactly Is Marriage? The Catholic Church teaches that marriage, as God instituted it, is a faithful, exclusive, lifelong covenant. It is the permanent union of one man and one woman. They are joined through a mutual giving of themselves. In marriage, a husband and wife commit themselves totally. The commit is not only to each other but also to the responsibility of bringing children into the world and caring for them. We see this in the Scriptures. It begins with the Book of Genesis, with God s creation of man and woman in His own image. In Genesis 1:27 it states, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him. So God gives man and woman to each other in marriage. As a result they become one flesh. In Genesis 2:24; 1:28 God invites them to be fruitful and multiply. Jesus also confirms this truth in His teaching on divorce in Matthew 19: 3-9. Because God has created us out of love, He calls us to love as well. This is our vocation as creatures of God made in His likeness. The mutual love of man and woman in marriage becomes a sacred image of God s love for His people. This love is also seen in Ephesians 5: As a symbol of this love, the valid marriage of baptized Christians is a sacrament. This is a saving reality that brings God s grace into our lives and helps us to be holy. Sacramental marriage points the world to Christ s faithful, creative, and sacrificial love. FATHER S DAY MASS REMEMBRANCE Statistics tell us that if fathers accompany their children to Mass, 80%100% of their children will remain practicing Catholics. Fathers have an important role in the future of our Church. On June 17th we will specifically celebrate Fathers Day at the 9:00 AM Mass on Sunday, June 17th at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others. Marcellinus and Peter; Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev s work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today! Rev. We all have a name, don t we? Perhaps we take that gift for granted as it is so common, or is it? Our name when spoken by others in conversation brings our very presence in the room. It brings to the conversation who we are, what we are known for, who we love or associate with, what are values are and so much more to those listening. When we change our name it is an event marking a significant change in our lives, such as when we choose a Saints name for our Confirmation name, recognizing that a new journey of faith is about to begin. To be named is a very powerful event! When God called Moses to lead the Israelites from captivity, He called him by name. God said to Moses that He would be with him during his mission. Moses did not know God s name.. so Moses asked so that he could tell others who sent him. God told Moses His name, I Am, and it was in His name Moses set the people free. The prophet Isaiah foretold, The people in darkness have seen a great light. For a child is born to us, a son given us. They name Him Wonderful Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace ; Jesus the Christ. Jesus tells us that whatever we ask of the Father in His name He will do so that the Father may be glorified in the Son if we believe in him and follow the way. He gave us the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father sent in the Son s name to teach us and remind us of all Jesus told us. When we were baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, God was present. All that God is, is made present in the invocation of His name. All that God is, was there at our Baptism. All that God is, is with us because of His Son Jesus The name above all names! When Jesus calls us to His Heavenly kingdom, He will call us by our name! What s in a name? Quite a bit. Tithing is the responsibility of every Catholic. You cannot out do the generosity of God. The faithful of the Diocese of Moshi intend to build schools for children with disabilities. This school will help children with disabilities to get an opportunity to develop their intellectual potential just like other children.
