2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at Notes from the Pastor Lent, Keep It Simple...Our Lenten Retreat Lent is an important season in our Catholic Faith. Each year on Ash Wednesday, we begin our Lenten retreat. We are blessed with ashes. These ashes remind us that we are dust, and to dust we will return. During the 40 days of Lent we are led into the desert of our heart to look within. We face our sins and ask for God s mercy. Lent was originally intended as a time of preparation for those being baptized at Easter. It gradually became a time when all of us get ready to renew our own baptismal promises. It is the season that we prepare both individually and as a Church for the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Lent is the season when we reflect on the dying and rising of Jesus Christ. This is what makes our salvation possible. This is also the season when we enter into Christ s dying and rising. At this time we seek to purify, cleanse and nourish our bodies, minds and souls. Lent is like a long retreat during which we can turn back into ourselves and listen to the voice of God, in order to defeat the temptation of the Evil One. It is a period of spiritual combat which we must experience alongside Jesus, not with pride and presumption, but using the arms of faith: prayer, listen to the word of God and penance. In this way we will be able to celebrate Easter in truth, ready to renew the promises of our baptism. Adapted From Our Sunday Visitor By Fr. Would you like to volunteer by helping our St. Joan of Arc Knights of Columbus as a Sous Chef/Assistant Chef for fundraising events at our church? This would include menu and meal prep in our Parish Social Hall kitchen. One of the perks of this volunteer work is that it's not an "everyday" task, it's just when our Knights of Columbus have fundraising events. Pero mirándolos bien, vemos que las palabras que contienen son personales y relacionales. Todos usan la palabra tu. Todos tienen que ver con la relación de nosotros con Dios y con los demás y todos forman el cimiento de la alianza entre Dios y su pueblo escogido. Aun en estos mandamientos Dios demuestra que las probabilidades se inclinan en favor de la humanidad. El castigo será infligido hasta la tercera y cuarta generación, lo cual suena horrible, pero el Señor se mostrará misericordioso hasta la milésima generación, o sea, básicamente por siempre (Éxodo 20:5 6). El enojo de Dios no dura para siempre, pero sí su amor. Tanto los judíos como los paganos están ciegos con sus expectativas, pero de diferente manera. La expectativa de los judíos del tiempo de Jesús era la de un Mesías, que vendría con un poder mundano y vencería a cualquier régimen que estuviera gobernándolos. Un Mesías que sufriera y muriera no tenía sentido. Los griegos, con su énfasis en la filosofía, valoraban la sabiduría. Filosofía, después de todo, quiere decir amor a la sabiduría en griego. Qué sabiduría existe en seguir a alguien que rehuía de la fama, acogía a los marginados y finalmente lo mataron? Pero la locura de Dios es más sabia que la sabiduría de los hombres (1 corintios 1:25). La sabiduría y el poder de Dios no eran obvios, ni siquiera para los discípulos de ese tiempo, pero fue por humillarse que el Mesías fue exaltado. El Evangelio tiene lugar en el templo de Jerusalén, el signo de la presencia de Dios aquí en la tierra, y tiene lugar alrededor de la fiesta de la Pascua judía, cuando se recuerda que Dios liberó a su pueblo escogido de la esclavitud en Egipto. Pero Jesús puede decir: Destruyan este templo y en tres días lo reconstruiré, pues él mismo es la presencia de Dios aquí en la tierra más allá que ningún edificio, y él es el agente de la salvación, más allá que ninguna memoria de la Pascua judía (Juan 2:19). Pregunta de la Semana Cómo puedo tomar la misericordia y la sabiduría de Dios, y pasarlas a los demás en mi vida diaria? Doy ejemplo de la misericordia de Dios en mis relaciones con los demás? Doy ejemplo de la sabiduría de Dios al darle valor a lo que el mundo ridiculiza?

3 March 4, 2018 w this bulletin on-line at Page 3 T M S. J A P J,,,. KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH There s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go un-diapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)? We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: The law of the L is perfect, refreshing the soul (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking. Perpetua and Felicity Thursday: St. John of God Friday: St. Frances of Rome; Abstinence TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If your parish is reading from Year B of the Lectionary today, and not Year A, as is normally done when there are elect present for the Scrutinies and preparing for Easter baptism, you hear about Jesus driving the money-changers from the temple. If you wished to get as close as possible to this site today, you would in fact be at a Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, built on the ruins of Herod s temple. Archeologists believe that this striking, gold-domed crown of a shrine is set precisely where the Holy of Holies once was. Jews believe that the rock is the exact spot where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. It is not a mosque, as some think, but a shrine, the oldest one in the Muslim world. For them, the rock is the place from which the Prophet Mohammed ascended on a visit to heaven. The Crusaders mistook the shrine for the actual Temple of Solomon, and the infamous Knights Templar used it as their headquarters and model for their churches elsewhere. The geometric perfection of the shrine is a mathematician s dream. The inscriptions are not exactly hospitable though, since they encourage Christians to depart from error and declare that Jesus son of Mary was only a messenger of God. In ancient times, those who prayed here after walking around the rock were given a certificate entitling the bearer to admission to paradise. The ticket had to be buried with them. Rev. A great way to avoid failing those commandments is to commit ourselves to giving more of our God-given time, talent and treasure back to Him. There are four weeks left in Lent with Easter Sunday coming on April 1st. Let us use this precious time to increase our prayer life. Here are a few suggestions which many of us are already committed to: * Daily Rosary * Daily Mass * Fifteen minutes reading and meditating on the readings for the coming week s Sunday Masses * Attending Stations of the Cross at 7:00pm for the remaining Fridays of Lent. This is a good time to seriously consider becoming more active in the Parish by committing to a ministry of service such as: * Eucharistic Minister or Minister of Care taking Eucharist to the home bound * Member of the Choir or Lector * Usher or Greeter * Our Youth Group * Religious Education * Knights of Columbus or the Ladies Columbiettes * St. Vincent de Paul Society * Volunteering in the Parish Office or with the Grounds Committee * Joining the Council of Catholic Women or Volunteering in the Gift Shop Scripture encourages us to be generous by praying, fasting and alms giving. What better and easier way is there to be generous than to increase our alms giving (weekly Offertory Collection) to our Parish. It not only will help us please God, but it will help our parish. It would be wonderful if each family increased its Offertory Collection contribution just by just 5%. For where your treasure is, there also lies your heart. They may question why we cannot help them as they have a relative that belongs to St. Joan. We are bound by Vincentian Rule to help only those who live within the Parish boundaries to which we belong as a group. There would be a great deal of confusion from the parishes tripping over each other. As Vincentians we call upon each other from time to time and get God's work done.
