2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at January 28, 2018 Notes from the Pastor Notitas del Diácono Being Present: What Technology Cannot Replace Finding Balance-Some Practical Tips: Changing technology in our life is easier said than done. But, we can create new habits in small steps. The first thing we can do is track our time by writing down the time we spend on line each day. Studies show that people lose more weight when they keep a journal of the food they eat during the day. In the same way, if we keep a journal on the amount of time we spend on the computer, it will help us to curb our time on line. We can also designate offline times and be truly open about them. For example, we can turn off our cell phone when we are at our child s soccer games or during family meals. We can also avoid tension with others who want you to be on with you constantly. We can tell them that our goal is to have a better balance with our life. We can even try to inspire them to do the same and not be so addicted to the computer. At the same time we can shut down our computer and other electric devices every night. This helps us realize that we must disconnect our electronic equipment for the day. We must also take time to boot everything up in the morning. During this time of waiting each morning, we can think about how we can better use our online time during the day. We can also try to contact our friends the old-fashioned way, making the effort to call or visit our family and friends on a regular basis. Our relationships will benefit with this personal touch. In finding a proper balance in our day to day activity, we can include technology use in our examination of conscience. At the end of each day and before we receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation we can take a moment to reflect. We can ask ourselves if we have been using technology to either deepen our relationship with God and others or to avoid them. Has my time on line caused me to neglect anything or anyone I should be paying attention to? Some Catholic Internet sites have questions and insights to help us to do this. Adapted from Our Sunday Visitor by Jennifer Fulwiler Dicen que ponerle nombre a algo nos da poder sobre ello.

3 January 28, 2018 (View this bulletin on-line at Page 3 T M S. J A P J,,,. TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God s mouth. In Mark s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today s Gospel we learn that Jesus fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God s very words filling our mouths. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Moses spoke to all the people, saying: A prophet like me will the L, your God, raise up for you (Deuteronomy 18:15-20). Psalm If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties (1 Corinthians 7:32-35). Gospel The people were astonished at Jesus teaching (Mark 1:21-28). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 2 Sm 15:13-14, 30; 16:5-13; Ps 3:2-7; Mk 5:1-20 Tuesday: 2 Sm 18:9-10, 14b, 24-25a, 30 19:3; Ps 86:1-6; Mk 5:21-43 Wednesday: 2 Sm 24:2, 9-17; Ps 32:1-2, 5-7; Mk 6:1-6 Thursday: 1 Kgs 2:1-4, 10-12; 1 Chr 29:10-12; Mk 6:7-13 Friday: Mal 3:1-4; Ps 24:7-10; Heb 2:14-18; Lk 2:22-40 [22-32] Saturday: 1 Kgs 3:4-13; Ps 119:9-14; Mk 6:30-34 Sunday: Jb 7:1-4, 6-7; Ps 147:1-6; 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23; Mk 1:29-39 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time; Catholic Schools Week Wednesday: St. John Bosco Friday: The Presentation of the Lord; Groundhog Day; First Friday Saturday: St. Blaise; St. Ansgar; First Saturday; Blessing of Throats; Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This is the year of St. Paul, and so one of the most visited churches of Rome is also one of the most beautiful: the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Like so many other churches, it was founded by the master-builder (or financier) Emperor Constantine about the year 315. Paul was martyred outside the walls of the City of Rome at a place called Tre Fontaine, probably on June 29, in the year 65, perhaps the first anniversary of St. Peter s crucifixion. Christians buried him in a quiet place about two miles away, and visited to pray. Constantine was running low on bricks, apparently, because the first church was tiny. In 386 it was demolished and today s basilica begun. This vast and towering space looks much the same today as it did in the fourth century. The centuries have not been kind to ancient Rome, but until the early 1800s St. Paul Outside the Walls survived beautifully, perhaps because it has been assigned for nearly a thousand years to Benedictine monks. It was therefore a vibrant place of daily prayer even through the centuries when Rome was a poor and nearly abandoned city. In 1823 a great fire resulted from a botched repair job to lead on the roof, and St. Paul s was destroyed. It is said that the whole world contributed to its restoration. Even the Russian czar and the viceroy of Egypt gave alabaster, malachite, and lapis lazuli for the pillars and the tabernacle. Several of the precious mosaics were able to be restored, bringing the ancient basilica back to life. One of the great treasures of the basilica is a set of prison chains, said to have been worn by the Apostle in the last days before his martyrdom. Unlike other Roman churches, St. Paul s stands in a garden-like suburban neighborhood, surrounded by stately palm trees, gardens, and parks. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Stewardship Report for Dec 31, 2017 Attendance: 887 Envelopes Used 273 Envelopes : $ Offertory Cash $ Second Collection: $ Total: $ Christmas: $ Solemnity of Mary: $ In today s Gospel, St. Mark tells us that the people were astonished at Jesus teaching in the synagogue because He taught with such great authority and not as the scribes had done. As we know from the other gospel writings, Jesus was teaching the theme of loving God and neighbor. He was encouraging the people of His time and, of course, all of us, to demonstrate our loving actions by being generous with the gifts that God has given us. We need to ask ourselves, Are we listening to the teachings of Jesus; and more importantly, are we following His directions? One way to listen to Jesus is through prayer. Many times our prayers seem to be a one-way conversation where we do all the talking. A wonderful way to listen to the teachings of Jesus is to include verses of Scripture in our prayer time. The St. Joan weekly bulletin shows the Readings for the Week for each Mass through the following Sunday. Before we go to Sunday Mass, let us consider including the readings for that Mass in our daily prayers. If we can t make it to daily Mass, let us include the daily readings in our daily prayers. As a result of our daily prayers with an open heart and mind, we will surely be led by the Holy Spirit to find ways to follow the teachings of Jesus to serve Him by serving our Parish in one of the many ministries available to us. There have certainly been many times in our lives when we benefitted from others who have followed the teachings of Jesus by serving us. Think of services like Eucharist to Home Bound, music at the Masses, Church Décor, Religious Education, the Widows Group, the Grounds Committee, and many more. We are certainly called to serve others as we have been served. In addition to serving our Parish, let us also consider sharing our financial resources in the same grateful way. Perhaps we should think about including St. Joan of Arc Parish in our wills. This would be a wonderful way to show our gratitude for the many services it has provided for us during our years in the Parish. A simple call to Anne in the Parish Office can get the ball rolling. For where your treasure is, there also lies your heart. Matthew 6: 21 (Deacon Lee is ill. Please keep him in your prayers.)
