He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. 1 Peter 2:24a THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Twenty-third Psalm, today s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage (Psalm 23:4) connects this week s scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). Fourth Sunday of Easter TODAY S READINGS First Reading All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). Psalm The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b-25). Gospel The shepherd leads the sheep out into pastures of abundant life (John 10:1-10). For example, the word Pasch comes from the Hebrew Pesach, Passover. The Spanish word for Easter is Pascua. When Christianity expanded to Northern Europe, its springtime celebration of the resurrection received a new name from the Teutonic people, the subfamily of the Germanic languages. This is where the origin of English comes from. The name used today is Easter. This word probably came from an Anglo-Saxon spring goddess, Eotre. This was the way Venerable Bede (d.735) explained it. However, there are doubts that such a goddess ever existed. Another explanation is the misunderstanding of a Latin phrase for Easter Week in white vestments. These are garments of the newly baptized (in albis). They thought it was the plural of alba in the Latin idiom for dawn, which is the birth of the new spring sun in the east. This was translated in Old High German as eostarun. The symbolism means: Christ is the sun that rises at dawn-in the east. 4 Page 4 (View this bulletin on-line at May 7, 2017 ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL n today s Gospel, Jesus tells His followers that He is I the gate for the sheep; and whoever enters the gate through Him will be saved. What a gift we all have been given. We are given eternal life by the Father through His son, Jesus Christ. We are the sheep that Jesus loves and guards so closely. All he asks us to do is to follow Him, and that doesn t mean to follow Him dumbly like sheep. It means that are to follow Him by emulating Him by doing what we are called to do in doing the work of Jesus. That work is different for all of us when it comes to sharing our talents to do many of the ministries our Parish offers to our parishioners and to the community at large. Many of us are serving the Parish in acts of love as Lectors, Eucharistic ministers, sacristans, choir members and cantors, altar servers, ushers and greeters, members of the CCW, Knights of Columbus, the Columbiettes, Gift Shop and Office volunteers, teachers of our youth, Bulletin editors, and the list goes on. Others serve the community as members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and as Martha s Helpers. In these services we are truly following Jesus in acts of love as shepherds in our own right. But we are called to do even more in the area of Treasure, supporting the needs of the Diocese and, of course, our Parish. That, of course is done through the weekly Offertory Collection and the Annual Pastoral Appeal. Let us be generous at this time with the Annual Pastoral Appeal. Let us make our gifts today that will help us to reach our goal. Pledge Cards were mailed to each of us; and there are more at the entrance doors of the church. For where your treasure is, there also lies your heart.
