2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at January 7, 2018 Notes from the Pastor Notitas del Diácono CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD The word Catholic means universal. This universality is seen in the diverse Catholic traditions in celebrating the season of Christmas. 1) In Latin America Las Posadas is celebrated. Las Posadas is a procession with prayer and song. This tradition dramatizes Mary and Joseph searching for shelter in Bethlehem. 2) In Poland, Oplatek wafers have nativity scenes pressed into the cookie-wafer. These wafers are blessed by a priest and brought home to the family. They are laid on a bed of straw. Pieces are broken off and shared, with a prayer for the blessings of the next year. 3) In the Philippines, people will erect Parols. These are star-shaped lanterns. These Parols are placed along roadways as well as in front of houses as signs of welcome and hope for peace. Throughout the world, besides December 25, there are days which families will exchange gifts. The first day is December 6. This is the feast of St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was a saint whose actions in life Santa Claus was based. Another day of exchanging gifts is on January 6th. This is the feast of Epiphany. This is the day the Three Wise men came bearing gifts to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The birthplace of Jesus is Bethlehem. Bethlehem means house of bread. Many ancient theologians considered this to be a prefiguring of the Eucharist. Jesus came to us in the house of bread, and comes to us in the form of Living Bread. Every time we receive Him under the forms of bread and wine He comes to us in the Blessed Sacrament.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Monday: Tuesday: Saturday: The Epiphany of the Lord; National Migration Week; Julian Calendar Christmas The Baptism of the Lord First Week in Ordinary Time begins St. Hilary; Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200 s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundred-year project. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as an exceptional work of human creative genius. This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. It survived while the city burned around it, preserved, the townspeople say, by three heavenly patrons. EASTERN STAR Fair eastern star, that art ordain d to run Before the sages, to the rising Sun, Here cease thy course, and wonder that the cloud Of this poor stable can thy Maker shroud. Sir John Beaumont GOD S PROMISE TO ALL PEOPLE Today Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and that they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God s fidelity to them, all people shall become God s children and rejoice in the fulfillment of God s promise to Israel. TODAY S READINGS First Reading You shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). In today s world the word epiphany means a sudden awakening or realization of something important. God continually calls us to serve Him by serving others. Recognizing His call and committing to honor it is a form of an epiphany. We know we have been called. How have we responded? In today s first reading from the Book of Isaiah, the author writes that our light has come and that the glory of the Lord shines upon us. He encourages us to raise our eyes and look about to see the wonderful riches God has bestowed on us. It is through time in prayer that we must be open to God s calling to determine just how we are to share those riches with others. In today s second reading from St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians, he told his audience that he had received the Stewardship of God s grace for their benefit. He goes on to say that the Gentiles (meaning all others, including us) are coheirs and members of the body of Christ. What a gift from God!!! As recipients of God s Stewardship of grace, how can we, as members of the body of Christ, share God s gifts with others? In today s gospel reading, St. Matthew writes about the magi coming to the house where the child Jesus was staying. And after their long and tiring journey, they prostrated themselves before Him and did Him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. We have the opportunity of coming face to face with Jesus each time we attend Mass. How do we honor Him and give Him homage? And, equally important, do we open our treasures and offer Him our gifts? It is in giving that we receive. St. Francis of Assisi

It has helped greatly in planning our parish budget and keeping track of income. In addition, use of envelopes determines Faith Formation and Youth Fees, Catholic school subsidies and is used as a basis for letters of recommendation stating you are a practicing parishioner.
