2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at Notes from the Pastor APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION Rejoice and Be Glad!: The Call To Holiness Seeing Christ in Others The Beatitudes can be challenging. Pope Francis states, We can only practice them if the Holy Spirit fills us with His power and frees us from our weakness, our selfishness, our complacency and our pride...mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel. We are led to help those who are suffering. At the same time we are to seek social change that restore social and economic systems. This desire for change can lead to two different errors. The first is to treat Christianity like a non- profit aid organization. As a result we might ignore a personal relationship with God. We could be tempted to see the Church as a social agency. The second error is to distrust social engagement as too worldly. We might focus only on one issue at the expense of many others. Pope Francis reminds us that the defense of the unborn must be clear frim and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life. Equally sacred, are the lives of the poor, the infirm, the elderly, the migrant and refugee. What we do for others is how each of us will be judged according to Pope Francis. Mercy is how God determines who His true children are. Pope Francis uses the example of Mother Teresa, who said that God depends on us to love the world and show how much He loves it. August 12, 2018 Notes from Deacon Fred The Joy of Hope The good thief turned his head and looked toward our Lord. He saw a man with thorns driven in his head, nails piercing his hands and feet, scars all over his body from a severe whipping. He didn t know Jesus and one would think that he would see a tragic victim completely beaten without a hope of survival. Yet, he saw something more someone much greater than the man was it in his eyes? His peaceful demeanor as he suffered greatly? Perhaps it was His presence. Did the thief feel the presence of the Creator, the Holy Spirit... for surely they were present? It must have penetrated his very being as he turned to our Lord and pleaded Jesus remember me Tears of Joy must have immediately fallen from his eyes as he experienced the joy of hope in the promise of our Lord Today you will be with me in paradise! Elijah was in a tough spot. He did what the Lord commanded and witnessed to the Lord s might.. and the people were after him. Elijah felt he failed and was no better than his fathers, and prayed for death. The Lord sent his angels to strengthen him and lead him to a quiet place a place where the Lord would talk to him and give him hope to carry on. Jesus reminds us that if we believe in him, and partake of the Eucharist, He will remember us and deliver us from death and when we pass from this life. There is hope in Jesus. We look upon this bread and wine and see so much more.. We see His presence. We see the face of our Lord when we are kind to one another, when we forgive one another, and when we love one another. He reminds us that when we live in his love, we will enter into his kingdom. Deacon John G. mentioned he had to go visit a good friend who was on his death bed. Upon his return he shared a conversation he had with his friend on the day of his passing. John asked his friend how he felt His friend turned to John, smiled and with a twinkle in his eye said.. Don t be sad John, this is the best day of my life. The Joy of Hope! In His Footsteps Soup and Sandwich Special thanks to our St. Joan of Arc parishioners for your continued support each month This lunch program is possible because of you! Our next $1 Campaign will be next weekend: Aug 18/19.

3 August 12, 2018 T M, S.J Page 3 (View this bulletin on-line at A P, J,. STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Today we resume the Bread of Life discourse from John s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life a marvelous promise, but this reward is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Sunday: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Ss. John 6:51 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Careful readers of the Treasures will have noticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic communities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of family and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British assault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother superior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocated in 1824, but their old monastery is preserved as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest continuously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States. Rev. James Field ANGER S OFFSPRING As long as anger lives, she continues to be the fruitful mother of many unhappy children. St. John Climacus Save the Date for the Family Faith Fest! Saturday, October 27, 2018 The Diocese of St. Petersburg was established on June 17, 1968, and Bishop Gregory Parkes has announced that a large-scale music and faith festival will be held in Tampa to celebrate the momentous occasion of our 50th anniversary. Please plan on attending.

Would you like to sing for the Lord! We always have room for more singers! Mass Choir rehearsals will begin for this season on Wednesday, September 19th at 6:30 pm in the Church. If you would like to join us please plan to come sing with us! For more information contact Joyce Thorpe at the parish office.
