The Collect The Lessons: Old Testatment: 1 Samuel 8:4-20 Holman Christian Standard Bible 4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and went to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, Look, you are old, and your sons do not follow your example. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have. 6 When they said, Give us a king to judge us, Samuel considered their demand sinful, so he prayed to the Lord. 7 But the Lord told him, Listen to the people and everything they say to you. They have not rejected you; they have rejected Me as their king. 8 They are doing the same thing to you that they have done to Me,[a] since the day I brought them out of Egypt until this day, abandoning Me and worshiping other gods. 9 Listen to them, but you must solemnly warn them and tell them about the rights of the king who will rule over them. 10 Samuel told all the Lord s words to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, These are the rights of the king who will rule over you: He will take your sons and put them to his use in his chariots, on his horses, or running in front of his chariots.

7 12 He can appoint them for his use as commanders of thousands or commanders of fifties, to plough his ground or reap his harvest, or to make his weapons of war or the equipment for his chariots. 13 He can take your daughters to become perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 He can take your best fields, vineyards, and olive orchards and give them to his servants. 15 He can take a tenth of your grain and your vineyards and give them to his officials and servants. 16 He can take your male servants, your female servants, your best young men,[b] and your donkeys and use them for his work. 17 He can take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves can become his servants. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out because of the king you ve chosen for yourselves, but the Lord won t answer you on that day. 19 The people refused to listen to Samuel. No! they said. We must have a king over us. 20 Then we ll be like all the other nations: our king will judge us, go out before us, and fight our battles.

On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. The people are invited to confession in these or similar words. Dear friends Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

13 All: We give you thanks and praise, Almighty God, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. In fulfilment of your will he stretched out his hands in suffering to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people. He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that have might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence. Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son and Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you. In the same way he took the cup, saying, This is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of me. Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. We ask you to send you Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ.

16 Prayer After Communion Celebrant Let us pray. Book of Alternative Services Standing, the community prays in silence. The celebrant may say the Prayer after Communion appointed for the day. At the conclusion of the prayer the congregation says, Amen. Then the following doxology may be said. Celebrant All Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

17 Or instead of the Prayer after Communion and the doxology, the following may be said. Celebrant All All your works praise you, Oh Lord. And your faithful servants bless you. Gracious God we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hop you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
