EUCHARISTIC ADORATION On the First Friday of each month we gather in prayer and praise before the Blessed Sacrament. Following the 8 a.m. Mass and concluding at 10 p.m. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Parents of infants requesting information about Baptism may contact the parish office. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the second Saturday of the month. CELEBRATION OF CHRISTIAN FUNERALS At the time of death, a family member should contact the parish office, as soon as possible, to arrange the date and time for the Funeral Liturgy. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Couples must begin preparation for their Sacrament at least six months prior to their proposed wedding date. Please call the parish office for more information. SACRAMENT OF THE SICK The third Saturday of each month after the 8:00 a.m. Mass. John s words come to us on this day when the Gospel passage presents us with the great image of the vine and the branches. Jesus uses the image as a warning to those who have begun to distance themselves from the way of the Lord. One of the ways this happens is when we love God and others in word or speech instead of in deed and truth. What does it mean for us to remain in Christ? In an extension of the metaphor, the Lord gives us an example. If we remain in him, we will bear much fruit. As the branches, we draw strength from Christ who is the vine. This strength enables us to bear fruit to do the work of true discipleship. 6 Fifth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015 Page 6 RCIA WITNESS TALK In the next few weeks, you will be hearing from our newly initiated as to what they experienced moving through the RCIA process which culminates in the reception of the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. Below is the text of the Witness Talk given by our adult Neophyte, Sarah Boone, on Sunday, April 26, I would like to share with you a few thoughts about my walk with God, and especially about God-time. God-Time, by Sarah Boone. I was raised by atheists, and growing up there was a vast God-shaped emptiness in my life that I didn t know how to fill. Then, the summer I turned 13, my cousin Norah and I read a book about God, and everything changed. For the first time, we each had someone with whom we could talk about our questions and fears and beliefs. All summer we had our heads together, wondering about what happens when you die, about seeing the face of God in those we love, about God being in all things. We made up a code, so that even around our atheist parents we could tell each other that we were sisters in God and that we would never have to say goodbye because we would find each other in eternity. We were anxious little girls, holding hands in the dark, whispering together about God. All the searching that came before, all the questions and the lonely prayers, were redeemed when we fell into God-time and found someone to pray with. My path to the sacraments, culminating with my baptism and confirmation at the Easter Vigil, has been like living that summer all over again. God has come to meet me, even in my anxieties and my loneliness, and He has given me a sacred time to be still and know that He is God. The loveliest thing about this time of initiation and conversion for me has been time itself. God-time. Each Sunday, mass has become a time for hearing God s Word in a more receptive way. I ve had fellowship with the catechists and my fellow converts, time in which to talk about God and share our experiences and our struggles. I have also had lots of time to just think, and pray, and listen. It s remarkable what happens when we set aside time for the sacred. It doesn t matter how young or old I am, how idle or how busy, when I take or am given the time to be still and pray and really connect with others in an ongoing conversation about God and the ways the Holy Spirit moves in my life, lights start to turn on. I see God all around me. I hear Jesus in every song on the radio. I find Christians everywhere I look. I feel the Holy Spirit pushing or pulling me where I need to go sometimes gently, and sometimes with great urgency. I was really lucky to have fallen into God-time when I was a teenager, and that summer has made all the difference in the last 22 years. I am blessed to have gotten to experience that revolution again as an adult, and I am unspeakably grateful to God for the ways He has turned my heart and my eyes around as I walked the path to the sacraments. I know now that for myself, to understand the things I am meant to know, to hear the messages God has for me, and to find peace as the happy child God made me to be, I have to take the time: slow down, take a deep breath, hold someone s hand, and pray. I know that my job is to seek out God-time. It s what put me on the path to God, it s what prepared me for the sacraments, and it s what allows me to be a person of the Resurrection. Amen.

9 Quinto Domingo de Pascua 3 de mayo de 2015 Page 9 Lecturas y Noticias TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Durante la Última Cena, Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: Yo soy la vid, ustedes son los sarmientos (Juan 15:5). Jesús añade que los sarmientos (ramas) que permanecen en él, dan mucho fruto. Según la agricultura, la vid es una parra, es decir, una planta perenne de ramas frondosas. Una parte importante de la vid son las hojas. Es obvio que una vid tiene hojas, pero Jesús no las menciona, prefiere enfocarse en los sarmientos. Las partes de la vid son las raíces, tronco, sarmientos, hojas, flores y fruto. Según esta división Jesús sería el tronco, pero él dice ser la vid completa. Esta es una imagen de la unidad que Jesús quiere entre sus seguidores. Recordemos que Jesús celebra la Última Cena con sus discípulos. La comunidad de discípulos unidos a Jesús formamos la vid. Los sarmientos o ramas conducen agua y minerales a las hojas, flores y frutos, y son útiles en tanto estén unidos a la vid. Lo mismo vale de los cristianos, discípulos de Jesús. LA PALABRA DE DIOS HOY El pasaje tan familiar que se proclama en el Evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que nosotros somos las ramas en la vid y que la vid es Jesucristo. En el momento de nuestro bautismo fuimos injertados en esa vid y desde entonces mucho se ha esperado de nosotros. Mientras más cercanos estemos de Cristo la vid, más aprenderán los demás a reconocer a Cristo por medio de nuestras obras. Si queremos saber de qué obras se trata, no necesitamos mirar más allá de la segunda lectura de hoy. Ahí san Juan nos dice que nos amemos los unos a los otros como Cristo nos ha mandado. Mira hoy a tu alrededor en la iglesia y verás los otros injertos de la vid; son aquellas personas que están sentadas a tu derredor. Las palabras de Juan nos llegan hoy cuando el pasaje del Evangelio nos presenta con la gran imagen del viñedo y las ramas.
