My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER We are very pleased to have Bishop Lennon visiting our parish this Sunday to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation upon our young people at the 5 p.m. Mass. Please remember our bishop and our young people in your prayers. To my young friends being Confirmed: I am so very proud of you! Always know God s Love in your life and always remain faithful to Him. There can be many challenges in life to be sure, but if you stay close to Christ and His Church, you will find great strength. Our 8 th graders will be transitioning from drama to religion this week. They have just completed a 5-day Seussical theatrical run in our gym, and now are refocusing on their Confirmation. They were outstanding in their performances, singing and dancing far beyond their ages. It was an amazing production. Thank you Drama Club and parents for all the work and hours you put into the success of Seussical. You are the heart of our Academy. The 8 th graders will be confirmed by Bishop Lennon at the 5 p.m. Mass this Sunday. Please keep these young people in your prayers. We are celebrating Spirit Week this week. Highlights of the week s activities include: Monday Grades K to 3 will have an exotic animal assembly with Outback Ray in the gym. Wednesday Grade 6 will be on their Cleveland trip. Thursday is our annual Faith Talent Show. Next Monday, May 26, there will be no classes in observance of Memorial Day. Please remember to say a prayer of thanks for the sacrifices of the men and women who gave their lives defending our country. There are only 17 days left of our school year. Hard to believe!! Hebrews 13:1-2 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LYCEUM S NEWEST NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR Gina Hawersaat (Class of 2014) was recently named a National Merit Scholar! Gina has spent the last six years studying Latin and Greek, mathematics, history, literature, empirical science and the higher sciences of philosophy and theology through the reading and discussion of the Good and Great Books at the core of Western Civilization. Emily Flood and Elizabeth Meluch, also students in the class of 2014, were previously recognized as Commended Students. In The Lyceum's eleven year history, twenty-nine (29%) per cent of all Lyceum graduates have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as Commended Students, Semifinalists and Scholars scoring in the top 1-5% on the National PSAT. What is extraordinary about this statistic is that The Lyceum is more selected rather than selective. The school has a rolling admissions policy and any student who applies and is likely to succeed in completing its curriculum of classical Catholic education is accepted into the program. Financial assistance, based upon financial need, makes this education available for everyone. Students who begin the study of Latin and Greek in the junior high develop remarkable verbal skills at an early age. In addition to the study of Latin and Greek, students of The Lyceum follow a rigorous mathematics curriculum which includes a year of real Euclidean geometry where the students master logical and critical thinking. Euclid's Elements, written about 350 B.C., was studied by Boethius, Sir Isaac Newton, John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein. All Lyceum students memorize beautiful poetry and perform in Greek tragedies and Shakespearean comedies. They sing the sacred polyphony of Palestrina and Gregorian and Byzantine chant. We could still use a couple more just in case one is lying unused in a corner of the basement at your house. 5 MAY 18, 2014 PAGE 5 FROM DEACON CHORDAS... What is happiness? A few parishioners and I experienced a new level of joy as we participated in Brother Daniel s final profession of vows to the Mercedarian Order of Priests. On a beautiful day in the quaint town of LeRoy, NY, we witnessed a man s total dedication to God. Brother Daniel s journey continues to ordination as a Transitional Deacon and then, in six months or so, to ordination to the priesthood; but on May 5, 2014, he became an accepted member of and a brother to his Order of the Mercedarians. Amidst his fellow brothers and priests, Brother Daniel beamed the joy of Christ as he answered the questions of his intentions. As he lay prostrate before his Superior of the Order and the altar of sacrifice, the Litany of Saints was chanted; and so many of us were spiritually transported to a higher level. When he stood up, his face was beaming and his eyes were moist with the tears of gladness. I was so happy for this young man who, as a sophomore at Mayfield High School, was a student in my History class. Now, as a Deacon, I was asked to participate in this most magnificent of events and view a true transformation. We say that faith is a gift from God that many do not embrace. Brother Daniel not only embraced it but also has become a model of its ability to bring peace to all who embrace it. What a beautiful journey for Daniel, who as a convert not only accepted the Catholic faith but took up the call to abandon all the materialistic goods that tempt us and follow Christ. Henry David Thoreau wrote in On Walden Pond: Most men lead lives of quiet desperation. Brother Daniel is not of that group. He has found his role in this short life we lead. Brother Daniel has become what so many of us have not: a true witness to Christ. After the ceremony, the most powerful event happened ~ at least for me. On leaving the beautiful Church of Our Lady of Mercy in a procession of thirteen priests and many Mercedarian brothers, Brother Daniel came up to me and said that he loved me. In that moment I felt as if Christ was speaking to me. Believe it or not, I was at a loss for words because I was too busy crying. Brother Daniel is planning to be ordained a priest sometime next year. The best part of this for us is that he is planning for it to be his and our home parish of Sacred Heart of Jesus. This will be a great day of celebration. Please pray for Brother Daniel as he has been praying for us everyday. ENTHRONEMENT OF THE SACRED HEART... Let us place ourselves under the watchful eye of Our Blessed Mother Mary, who will teach us to Love with the Heart of Jesus. Each will be for a two-year term, beginning July 1 of Candidates must fulfill one of the following: Be a graduate of St. Gregory the Great School (now known as Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy). Be a parent or legal guardian of a child currently attending the Academy. Be a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. Be an individual who has contributed a minimum of $500 to the Academy Endowment Trust Fund. St. John Paul II Evangelium Vitae...IN THE WORLD Justin Trudeau, the head of Canada's Liberal party, says his party's candidates will not be permitted to hold pro-life views. As of last Wednesday, Trudeau made it clear that any new candidates running for office as a Liberal will have to be both prochoice and in favor of homosexual marriage. The decision was announced one day before thousands of pro-lifers took part in Canada's annual National March for Life. Thursday, Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton, Alberta, said: This is an outrage...to stand up on the eve of a day when thousands of people are coming out to speak in favor of the vulnerable, to speak in favor of the protection of life in the womb, to come out and slap them all in the face...here we have a man who would like to be Prime Minister some day, dictating to party members that they must vote against fundamental human rights. In effect, what they re saying is, There s no choice but pro-choice. That s a contradiction in itself.
