Women s Prayer Group The Women s Prayer Group calls the women of St. Mark parish who wish to deepen their relationship with the Lord and one another to prayerful discussions of scripture and Church teaching on a variety of themes. It seeks to support, befriend, and bond the women of the parish as they seek to integrate faith with their vocations as married, single and religious Catholic women of the twenty first century. The giving and receiving of spiritual support is the fruit of the women s gathering which takes place in the prayerful setting of our parish every third Friday evening of the month at 7:30PM in the St. Clare Room. Bible Study: Tuesdays from 7PM to 8PM, in the St. Francis Center, formerly the Early Childhood Learning Center to the north of the church. We are currently studying the Book of Psalms. 4 A note from Father Richard: THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: In the Gospel reading for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, we hear Jesus refer to himself metaphorically as the gate for the sheep. This was a useful image for his original rural audience who knew well the agrarian lifestyle. The metaphor, of course, still works today given Jesus clarifying words: I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. Jesus analogy about the pasture suggests the ideas of both provision and protection: He came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. The imagery here is of plenty, not just enough. This generous Shepherd provides not only our daily bread, but also our spiritual food.this brings us to the second point: protection. Jesus guards us, ensuring our safety. Psalm 23 declares, Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side. Jesus wants to comfort us when we are frightened by trials or threatened by temptations. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. Out of harm s way. But we must be sure we know him well enough to recognize his voice when he calls. MOTHER S DAY: The celebration of Mother s Day dates back all the way to ancient times, but the idea of the celebration was first kicked around in Julia Ward Howe, author of the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, proposed Mother s Day as a day dedicated to peace. But it was Ann Jarvis of West Virginia, however, who really pushed for a national day to honor mothers. On the second anniversary of her mother s death, Jarvis asked her mother s church in Grafton, West Virginia, to celebrate a day to honor mothers. Her mother had died on the second Sunday in May. The church obliged and the following year, the city of Philadelphia joined in the celebration. Thanks to a campaign by Jarvis and her supporters, by 1911 almost every state celebrated Mother s Day. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. ST. MARK PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL: The nature and purpose of the council as stated in the Guidelines: The Parish Pastoral Council acts in a consultative capacity to the pastor, the pastoral staff, and the ministries serving the Parish. This includes all matters relating to, but limited to, liturgy, worship, education, finance, parish life, community service, and administrative affairs. Its members form a community of prayer, leadership, and service. Guided by the pastor, the members of the council work together to plan, coordinate, and evaluate the pastoral work of the parish. They seek to listen to the Holy Spirit in discerning what is best for the parish in light of the Gospel, the Church s teaching and the experience and needs of the parishioners and the surrounding community. If any parishioner has a suggestion or a concern, please contact one of the members. CELIAC DISEASE: A Mayo Clinic-led analysis published in 2012 estimates that roughly 1.8 million Americans have this disease, but around 1.4 million of them are unaware that they have it. We have low-gluten hosts available for members of our parish who have this condition. If you or a member of your family is in need of a low gluten host, please come into the sacristy before Mass and let us know. We have a special pyx that will be used for the low gluten host. We will ask you to place the host in the pyx and at Communion the purist of minister will give you the pyx. This way we try not to cross contaminate the low gluten host. VOCATION CHALICE: The purpose of the Chalice Program is to encourage parishioners and families to pray and promote vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. The consecrated Chalice is a tangible reminder of this special intention for the Church. We have a poster on the bulletin board in the narthex; this poster has the weeks when we need volunteers to take the chalice home. Each Saturday/ Sunday at Mass, the volunteer parishioner will accept the responsibility of praying for vocations at home with their family. You may attend any Mass just come to the sacristy and tell the Priest that you are to have the chalice for the week. The priest will call you to the altar after communion to receive the Chalice and prayers. Take the Chalice home and display it in a prominent place of honor for all to see during the week. At a special time each day, perhaps after dinner or before bed, pray for and concentrate on vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life. We ask that the Chalice be returned to the sacristy in church before the 4:00 PM Mass on Saturday (it could be returned to the Parish Office on Friday). We need to continue to pray for vocations. Please take the opportunity to pray for vocations by taking the Vocation Chalice home for a week.

5 HUGS A mom s hug lasts long after she lets go. Anonymous TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Every rectory office has received a panicked phone call from a person who has been invited to serve as a godparent, or from someone newly engaged, who suddenly needs to get confirmed. While the lack of confirmation is not an obstacle for marriage, it is for godparenting. Many are surprised that the Church seems to be looking for a kind of sacramental seal on one s baptism before the door opens fully to this ministry. Yet if you think about it, would you want someone to guide you to a place that he or she had not yet been? A godparent has to be someone who has been there and knows the way. Although signet rings and wax seals have passed from use, our society depends on seals of approval ranging from certificates of quality to the familiar safety seals on medicines and foods. While Eucharist is the seal of the sacrament of baptism, there is a sense in which one s Christian initiation is also incomplete without confirmation. Have you been confirmed?
