4 A note from Father Richard: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER: The readings for the Third Sunday of Easter continue to offer us insights into how the early Christians formulated their beliefs about Jesus and themselves in light of his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. Why didn t they recognize Jesus until he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them? During their encounter, Jesus had appeared to be just another man. But when he broke the bread in fact, celebrating the Eucharist they realized who he was. And then, he vanished from their sight. Could it be that the risen Lord wanted to teach his followers about the new way in which he was present? He was there, as we Catholics profess, through his real presence in the Eucharist. We are not so different from the disciples on the road to Emmaus. We may at times wish that Jesus was with us in a more obvious, traditional way. But the risen Lord comes to join us every time we go to Mass, remaining with us through his presence in the Eucharist. In the first reading from Acts last Sunday, we heard about the structure and activities of the church in Jerusalem. Today we hear an excerpt from Peter s inaugural speech delivered on the streets of Jerusalem after the descent of the Holy Spirit onto the apostles. What Luke provides for us in presenting Peter s speech is the early church s technique for instructing outsiders in the faith. Peter begins with the historical Jesus, informing listeners of what was publicly witnessed: Jesus of Nazareth, sent and empowered by God to work mighty deeds, was crucified by lawless men, and raised from the dead by God. Peter then offers Scripture (Ps 16:8-11) as a proof that the resurrection of Christ was foretold to Israel. Next, Peter teaches that the death and resurrection of Jesus fulfills God s covenant established with King David (see 2 Sm 7:12). Jesus as the fulfillment of God s covenantal relationship with Israel was key to understanding salvation history. Finally, we hear the essence of the good news: the apostles bear witness that God raised Jesus from the dead, ascended into heaven at God s right hand, and sent forth the Holy Spirit to believers. In this excerpt from Peter s speech, we catch a glimpse of the early church s catechesis. FRANCISCAN CHAPTER: From May 5 to May 9 the Friars of the St. Anthony of Padua Province (Fr. Richard, Fr. Sam, and Fr. Germain belong to this Province) will meet together with the Friars of the Immaculate Conception Province in Buffalo, New York for a Chapter. A Chapter is a gathering of the Friars in which they meet to grow in fraternity, to pray, to reflect on the past few years and to plan the next years. At this Chapter the two provinces will become one province. We have been preparing for this union for the last four years. Our new Province will be called Our Lady of the Angels Province. The Friars will again be away from the parish during this time. We will have visiting priests from St. Vincent DePaul Seminary cover for the Friars. We will have the 8:00 AM Mass but will not have the 5:00 PM Mass during that week. We will have priests to celebrate funerals (if necessary), to cover the hospital and emergency calls. The second session of the chapter will be in August. At this session of the Chapter, plans and programs of the Province for the next four years will be discussed and new assignments will be decided. We ask that you pray for the Friars as they gather in Chapter and plan for the future. 4

Any and all donations are greatly appreciated!! Congratulations to those Children Baptized into the St. Mark Family this Month: Jaliya Brooklyn Walker McKenna Page McTeague Clemente Robert Carfaro & Jeremiah Polusme TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Mystagogy, reflection on the Easter mysteries, is the chief task of these great fifty days, a pentecost, in other words, of grace and renewal. Every Sunday we have accounts of Resurrection appearances of the Lord, and sketches of the earliest efforts at being church. Lent is described as a journey to the font, and Easter may be described in similar terms, since at the very beginning an angel tells the apostles that the Risen Lord has gone before you into Galilee. Galilee, of course, was the place where Jesus did his finest work, his preaching, his healing, his gathering the lost and the marginalized to the table. At Easter, we hurry to catch up, putting our renewed baptismal promises to work in our own personal Galilees, our little worlds waiting for a word of grace, a healing, an act of pardon, an invitation to share a meal. The water often splashed on our Sunday assemblies in Eastertide reminds us: these are the golden, shining days of grace, days to nurture the heart, to speak to one another about things that really matter. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. STAY WITH US, LORD Walk with us, Lord, along the road of resurrec on! Explain for us, so slow to believe, the things that Scripture says of you. Break the bread of the Eucharist with us whenever we share our lives with our brothers and sisters. Stay with us each me night approaches and the daylight fades in our hearts!
