Knights of Columbus St. Mark Council No Grand Knight - Howard Solomon Meetings Every First Thursday of the Month at 7:00PM in the St. Francis Center The St. Mark Council of Catholic Women meets the second Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM in the Parish Center cafeteria. New members are always welcome. Please come and try us out! Women s Prayer Group The Women s Prayer Group calls the women of St. Mark parish who wish to deepen their relationship with the Lord and one another to prayerful discussions of scripture and Church teaching on a variety of themes. It seeks to support, befriend, and bond the women of the parish as they seek to integrate faith with their vocations as married, single and religious Catholic women of the twenty-first century. The giving and receiving of spiritual support is the fruit of the women s gathering which takes place in the prayerful setting of our parish every third Friday evening of the month at 7:30PM in the St. Clare Room. Bible Study All Parishioners and their guests are invited to join us on Tuesday evenings from 7-8 PM in the St. Clare Room of the St. Francis Center. We will be studying the Book of Acts which tells the story of the spread of the Gospel and the growth of the early church from its beginnings at Pentecost, following the Ascension of Jesus. We will learn how the Holy Spirit empowers the preaching of Peter, Paul, and the other disciples to take the faith from Jerusalem, to Judea, throughout Samaria and ultimately to the ends of the earth. 5 FYI: November 30, 2014 Happy New Year! This weekend we as Church begin a new Liturgical Year. The new Liturgical Year always begins on the First Sunday of Advent. This weekend, we begin Cycle B of the Readings from Holy Scripture. Weekday Readings from Holy Scripture will be taken from Year I of the Cycle. The word Advent comes from a Latin word which means coming. As Christians we remember that Christ came among us once as a human being. We also remember that Christ has promised us that He will return one day. The Advent Wreath and the candles of the wreath remind us of how God revealed Himself and continues to reveal Himself throughout human history. The Advent Wreath is blessed during the Universal Prayer on the Vigil of the 1 st Sunday of Advent. The first candle is lit to remind us that God revealed Himself through creation. The second candle is lit on the Vigil of the 2 nd Sunday of Advent. It reminds us that God revealed Himself to the Jewish people as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is a God of the living and not the dead. The 3 rd candle (rose) is lit on the Vigil of the 3 rd Sunday of Advent. It reminds us that God revealed Himself in the Person of His Incarnate Son, Jesus Christ. The 4 th candle is lit on the Vigil of the 4 th Sunday of Advent. It reminds us that Christ will come again. The First Sunday of Advent also is a Sunday of welcoming. This weekend at the 10:00 a.m. Choir Mass and 4:00 p.m. Spanish Mass we will welcome those men and women, boys and girls who have been studying informally into the Process of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Some of these people have never been baptized. These are called catechumens. Some were baptized Catholic but never received Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation. They are seeking to become full-fledged members of the church. Some were baptized into other Christian denominations but seek to join the Catholic Faith. They are called candidates for full Communion with the Catholic Church. During the coming months, these catechumens and candidates will intensify their studies and take part more and more in the life of the Church. If all goes to plan, they will be welcomed into the Church at the Easter Vigil If your schedule permits, please join us and welcome our brothers and sisters. 8 WATCH! Watch! This word occurs three times in today s Gospel passage. Moreover, it is placed at significant points: the beginning, the center, and the end. Though this is technically a parable, it is quite short (four verses). The threefold repetition of watch leaves no doubt as to what the story is about. We often think of Advent as a time of waiting, but it truly is a season of watchfulness, a very active form of waiting for the coming Day of the Lord. It is that day, more than Christmas day, that the Christian community faithfully expects, using all of our gifts and talents for this purpose, as Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Corinthians. When we use these gifts in faithful watching and expectation, we become like the servants of the parable, set to their tasks, not waiting around idly, but engaged in the master s work until his return. May our Advent be a time when we return or rededicate our lives and our communities to this work the active and diligent faithfulness that the Lord will expect to find. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Reflecting on God s Word O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel! So begins the familiar chant that will be heard in churches throughout the world this Advent. It is based on the O Antiphons, which are the verses for the Gospel acclamation at Mass on the last seven days of Advent. Each of those antiphons prays for the coming of Christ, and each one seems to capture the spirit of a different Sunday of Advent. The verse that harmonizes with this Sunday s scriptures expresses our longing for the Radiant Dawn of the Lord s coming at the end of time when the sun of justice will shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. In the readings we hear Isaiah describe the peaceful days to come, when all will walk in the light of the Lord! (Isaiah 2:2, 5). Paul tells us it is time to awake from sleep and put on the armor of light for the day is at hand (Romans 13:11, 13, 12). Jesus, too, cautions us to stay awake to be ready for the day your Lord will come (Matthew 24:42). All around us we seem to be getting a similar message: No time to waste! Only thirty shopping days left till Christmas! Don t be caught unprepared! What s the difference between the two messages? One tells us to anticipate a day of giving and getting and eating and drinking. We might prepare for that day by rushing and buying and wrapping and baking. The other tells us to anticipate a day, not of avarice and jealousy, but of justice for the oppressed and peace on earth.
