4 A note from Father Richard: TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: The Gospel reading for the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time once again turns to the issue of possessions and discipleship. The question of the proper attitude toward possessions is a matter that Jesus continues to address as he travels toward Jerusalem. Recall that Jesus already instructed the crowds against greed, the abundance of possessions. Jesus now challenges the crowds to the same level of commitment regarding possessions that he has done for his disciples: renounce all possessions. Planning ahead is part of any large project. Whether it s the building of a home for a family, or the reconstruction of a major highway, the planning may actually take longer than the work itself. Students will talk about their plans for what they will do after college or even their plans for the weekend. The Christian life has a plan as well, and in the Gospel this weekend Jesus asks us to consider the true cost of being one of his disciples. Have we invested enough of ourselves in what it means to follow him? PEOPLE ON CHURCH PROPERTY ASKING FOR MONEY: From time to time there are people in the church parking lot asking for money. They have good stories, sometimes some very sad stories. Some of the stories may be true and some may not. We would ask that you do not give them any money. Tell them to see one of the Friars we do have funds that can be used for this purpose. The outreach collection that we have a few times a year is for this purpose. Again, please do not give them any money. Some of these people are known to us, some go from parish to parish. Thank you. DEACON MARK LIZARDI: We welcome to our parish Deacon Mark Lizardi. Deacon Mark is a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Palm Beach. He was ordained a Deacon about four years ago. Since his ordination he was assigned to St. Thomas More Parish. As of August 29, Bishop Barbarito has assigned Deacon Mark to St. Mark Parish. We look forward to having Deacon Mark with us and as time goes on he will be involved in different ministries of our Parish. During the past few weeks we have been blessed to introduce two Deacons to our Parish: Deacon Mark, a Permanent Deacon, and Deacon Bryan, a Transitional Deacon. What can a Deacon do? In his letter concerning Deacon Mark, Bishop Barbarito says: The Diaconal Faculties of the Diocese of Palm Beach which are granted to you include permission to administer Baptism; distribute Holy Communion at Mass and outside of Mass; conduct the Rite of Viaticum; impart Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament to the faithful; assist at marriages; administer sacraments; preside at wake, funeral and burial rites; proclaim the Gospel at the Liturgy and give homily; read the Scriptures and preach over prayer meetings and Bible Services and give all blessings in rites in which you are minister. The order of deacon was established in apostolic times to serve the poor at table. For this reason, the deacon's role has always had a strong element of social justice. The order of deacon is one of three orders of clergy, the others being priest and bishop. Both the priest and the deacon are helpers of the bishop, and the bishop shares some part of his ministry with each of them. The deacon is called to be a servant, the priest a leader of worship, and the bishop a guide for the larger community. From ancient times, the chair of the bishop in the cathedral was always flanked by two deacon's chairs, because the deacons were called "the eyes and ears of the bishop," for it was their responsibility to inform the bishop of the needs of the poor and outcast in the community. What is the difference between a Permanent Deacon and a Transitional Deacon? A Transitional Deacon is a Deacon who has his formation in the seminary. His diaconate is usually one year that leads to the Priesthood. A Permanent Deacon is one who has a formation period of five years and then is ordained a Deacon and remains a Deacon. He has a job and can be married. Deacon Bryan (Transitional) will be with us during this school year. He will be ordained to the Priesthood for the Diocese of St. Augustine next May. Deacon Mark (Permanent) will stay with us and in the Diocese of Palm Beach permanently. We are blessed to have Deacon Mark and Deacon Bryan with us. ST. MARK SCHOOL: It was very sad to see St. Mark School close at the end of the last school year. But many of the students who would be in the eighth grade this year have remained together as part of St. Mark School. They are attending classes at Pope John Paul II High School. We have 18 students in the eighth grade. They will graduate from St. Mark School next May. SCHOOL BUILDINGS: As you read this our Parish Offices should have moved to the former school buildings. All Parish business will be conducted from there. The phone number is the same Our Parish Secretary, Bobbi Pruitt; our Parish Bookkeeper, Patty Schultz; our Director of Faith Formation, Margaret Garetano; and our Pastoral Minister, Sr. Mary Joan have offices in the former school buildings. We shall use the classrooms for our Religious Education classes. We shall also use the other rooms for Parish organizations, groups and Parish functions. If you would like to sponsor one of the offices or rooms, please contact the Parish Offices. For $ your name or the name of your loved one will be at the entrance of that room for one year. The present Parish Office will be the residence for the Friars. This will take some readjustment for all but with patience everything will work out. BLOOD DRIVE: The Parish will sponsor a blood drive on Sunday, Sept. 22. Please consider giving a unit of blood to help others. 4

6 The Respect Life Committee announces the following events, hoping that the parish will show its support by participating in as many of them as possible: The Birthline Walkathon at Emmanuel Church in Delray will be Saturday evening, October 5th, with Bishop Barbarito s Mass at 5:30PM followed by a walking rosary, light supper, music and singing. There are seats for those who cannot do the walking. Sign up to walk and/or to sponsor one of our Friars or Sister Mary Joan will begin this month. Take the time to follow along with the Development of A BABY in the Womb from Conception to Birth!! Week 25: Thousands and thousands of brain cells are growing in my head every day! Soon I will have a billion brain cells! The Life Chain will be held in front of St. Thomas More Church from 2:00PM to 3:00PM on Sunday, October 6th. The rosary will be led by Fr. Harris. He has generously furnished a refreshment tent and chairs. Respect Life Conference will be on October 18th & 19th at the Palm Beach Marriott. The Birthline Gala Dinner Dance will be held at The Palm Beach Gardens Marriott on November 16th.
