4 A note from Father Richard: SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: The readings for the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time teach us the importance of hospitality. In the kind act of welcoming another into your home, one can often encounter the presence of the divine. The rivalry of Martha and Mary described in Saint Luke s Gospel has played out in a variety of ways over the centuries. The story is often cited as indicative of the tension between the active and contemplative life in the church. But there is more at work in the Gospel than a first glance might suggest. Hospitality is one of the great social mores in the Middle East. Jesus is in some ways overturning that convention, inviting us to not only consider what we do for someone, but also what the other person offers to us. When we meet the beggar, what does he teach us? THE MASS: It has gone by many names over the centuries: the Breaking of the Bread, the Eucharist, the Divine Liturgy, the Un-bloody Sacrifice, the Mystical Supper of the Lamb, and many more. Any title falls short of capturing what is the source and summit of Christian faith. And yet, every title contributes to deepening our entry into this greatest Mystery of our faith. The Mass: this simplest title most likely derives from the sending forth in Latin: Ite MISSA est ( Go forth, the Mass is ended ; or, more literally, Go, She (the Church) has been sent ). The Mass is our greatest prayer because it is the prayer of Christ in his Paschal Mystery, in his supreme response to the Father, which includes his own going forth to the right hand of God. The ritual that clothes the Mass both invites and disposes the baptized to join in Christ s response of offering, sacrifice, blessing and praise. From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops LITURGICAL YEAR: The liturgical year is made up of six seasons: Advent - four weeks of preparation before the celebration of Jesus' birth; Christmas Time - recalling the Nativity of Jesus Christ and his manifestation to the peoples of the world; Lent - a six-week period of penance before Easter; Sacred Paschal Triduum - the holiest "Three Days" of the Church's year, where the Christian people recall the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus; Easter Time - 50 days of joyful celebration of the Lord's resurrection from the dead and his sending forth of the Holy Spirit; Ordinary Time - divided into two sections (one span of 4-8 weeks after Christmas Time and another lasting about six months after Easter Time), wherein the faithful consider the fullness of Jesus' teachings and works among his people. The mystery of Christ, unfolded through the cycle of the year, calls us to live his mystery in our own lives. This call is best illustrated in the lives of Mary and the Saints, celebrated by the Church throughout the year. There is no tension between the mystery of Christ and the celebration of the saints, but rather a marvelous harmony. The Blessed Virgin Mary is joined by an inseparable bond to the saving work of her Son, and the feasts of all the Saints proclaim the wonderful works of Christ in his servants and offer the faithful fitting examples for their imitation. In the feasts of the Saints the Paschal Mystery of Christ is proclaimed and renewed. From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops SCHOOL BUILDINGS: We are in the process of moving the Parish Offices to the school buildings. We are now working on the phone and computer systems. We will keep you informed on when the move will take place. Next Sunday s second collection envelopes: for St. Mark School. We shall continue to have a collection for St. Mark School this collection will help St. Mark Parish Students who are attending other Catholic Schools. DIOCESAN SERVICES APPEAL: The DSA supports the many ministries in our Dioceses. Some of the areas that the DSA supports are: Catholic Charities, Catholic Education, Communication, Cultural Offices, Diaconate and Religious Formation, Family Life, Vocations and Priestly Life. Our goal this year is $126,500. We have raised $98, Please help us reach our goal. As we see the reports from the other Parishes of the Diocese, many have reached their goal or are very close. Help St. Mark reach its goal. 4

5 THE BLESSING OF OUR PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Since the beginning of this ministry in our parish about four years ago, our gifts of love have been given in times of great sorrow and loss, comforting recipients undergoing surgery and medical treatments, and wrapping them in a warm hug, giving them a sacred space in their turbulent lives. The recipient realizes she or he is not alone, but enfolded in the prayers and good intentions of the givers, who, in turn, are blessed by each shawl given away. Our ministers have created hundreds of prayer shawls to enrich the lives of our community. In the process the ministers experience a peaceful, prayerful, social interaction. We invite YOU to join this vibrant group... The members meet twice a month: on the second and fourth THURSDAYS from 1:00PM 3:00PM in our Pope John Paul Room. For further information contact Helen Fults ( ) Coordinator or Sister Mary Joan ( ) We also welcome monetary or yarn donations to support our outreach. Take the time to follow along with the Development of A BABY in the Womb from Conception to Birth!! Week 18 ~ I have eyelashes! And my vocal cords work now! If there was air in my mother s womb, she might hear me cry. We are now accepting registration for next Fall s Faith Formation Classes. Please contact Ms. Margaret Garetano in the Parish Office. Classes are already filling up so please don t wait!
