Women s Prayer Group The Women s Prayer Group calls the women of St. Mark parish who wish to deepen their relationship with the Lord and one another to prayerful discussions of scripture and Church teaching on a variety of themes. It seeks to support, befriend, and bond the women of the parish as they seek to integrate faith with their vocations as married, single and religious Catholic women of the twenty first century. The giving and receiving of spiritual support is the fruit of the women s gathering which takes place in the prayerful setting of our parish every third Friday evening of the month at 7:30PM in the St. Clare Room. Bible Study All Parishioners and their guests are invited to join us on Tuesday evenings from 7-8 PM in the St. Clare Room of the St. Francis Center. We will be studying the Book of Acts which tells the story of the spread of the Gospel and the growth of the early church from its beginnings at Pentecost, following the Ascension of Jesus. We will learn how the Holy Spirit empowers the preaching of Peter, Paul, and the other disciples to take the faith from Jerusalem, to Judea, throughout Samaria and ultimately to the ends of the earth. 4 A note from our Pastor Father Dan: FYI Since I arrived on September 5th I have been so impressed by the goodness and kindness of the parishioners and friends of St. Mark s Parish. Many have offered, comments, suggestions and questions, so I hope to answer some of these under the title FYI (For Your Information) Last weekend I asked if anyone knew the origin of the plaques that I had displayed in the narthex. Several parishioners were kind enough to tell me that they believe these were the plaques used to memorialize the donors of the stained glass windows in the old church. Hopefully, we will be able to find a suitable place to install them so that these good people may be remembered once more. Two questions were posed to me in respect to the use of the bells during Mass and the placement of the tabernacle and those who have recourse to the tabernacle. As many older people may remember, altar bells were used in almost every Catholic church. They were used to remind the people that the Eucharistic Prayer had begun, the Consecration was about to take place, the showing of the Body and Blood of the Lord and finally just immediately prior to the reception of Holy Communion. They were used to remind people that something important was taking place. This was especially significant when the priest said Mass facing the wall and the language used was Latin. After the Second Vatican Council concluded, the priest began facing the people and the vernacular was established; many thought that the bells had outlived their usefulness. When I arrived at St. Mark, Fr. Sam suggested that the bells be reintroduced. The more I thought about it, I began to realize that for some the use of the bells is quite useful. As you know, Fr. Sam is almost blind. There are others who due to hearing difficulties may also benefit from the use of the bells. Some have mentioned to me they enjoy hearing them again. Others have mentioned they are reminded of a door bell or a cell phone. Remember though the purpose of the bells is to call attention to an important part of the Mass. In respect to the placement of the Tabernacle and those who have recourse to the Tabernacle. Many may remember when the tabernacle was placed in the middle of the sanctuary on the high altar. Many parishes after the Second Vatican Council moved the placement of the tabernacle to a side altar or even to a separate chapel. This was the case with my home parish of The Basilica of Our Lady of Victory in Lackawanna, NY. The purpose of this was to highlight the Mass alone, as opposed to the purposes of reserving the Eucharist. When the new St. Mark Church was constructed almost ten years ago, the Diocesan liturgical consultants, the friars and the builder consultants did a thorough reading of the Sacred Documents of the Liturgy. Highlighted in this document is that the Tabernacle is to be placed in a place of honor, preferably separate from the main area, and visible to all. I believe that our present Blessed Sacrament Chapel is the result. Therefore at present, there are no plans to move the tabernacle to the altar area. In respect to those who have recourse to the tabernacle, priests and deacons are the first choice to have recourse to the tabernacle, but for a just reason (e.g. illness or disability on the part of the priest or deacon.) (Remember here, Fr. Sam is almost blind. Fr. Germain has a very bad knee). The celebrant should not leave the altar area once the Eucharistic species have been consecrated. Therefore for a just cause Eucharistic ministers may have recourse to the tabernacle. In some older churches, like my home parish, the tabernacle on the main altar is being used because of its placement and historical significance. Historically there are many famous churches and cathedrals that do not have the tabernacle of the high or main altar but are reserved to a separate chapel. Among these churches and cathedrals are: Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris; St. Mark s Basilica in Venice, Italy; the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.; St. Patrick s Cathedral in NYC; St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome and St. Peter s Basilica in the Vatican. Did you know that a pastor is obligated to celebrate Mass on Sundays and holydays for the needs of the parishioners both living and deceased? He may do so in person or delegate another priest to do so. Thanks for reading Fr. ST. MARK CHURCH CHILDREN S CHOIR STARTING! The St. Mark s Special Children s Choir has begun practice. Children in kindergarten and grades 1 to 5 are invited to join. Practices are held on Wednesdays from 5:45PM to 6:25PM in the St. Mark Parish Center (gym.) CCD students are welcome to come before CCD classes start, and will be guided to their CCD classroom. Students who are members of our church but not attending CCD are also welcome! Maureen Fulop will lead the choir, and she plans for the Children s Choir to sing once a month at the 10:00 AM Family Mass (9:15 AM in season) and perhaps on holidays/holy days.
