Meeting will resume in the Fall and all women of the parish are invited to join. For more information, call Maureen Fulop at or Marie Capasso at The Legion of Mary meets on Wednesday mornings after the 8:00AM Mass in the Pope John Paul Room where we recite the Rosary and have a short meeting. The Legion offers an opportunity for both spiritual and active enrichment. We invite our auxiliary members to join us and always welcome new members. Women s Prayer Group The Women s Prayer Group calls the women of St. Mark parish who wish to deepen their relationship with the Lord and one another to prayerful discussions of scripture and Church teaching on a variety of themes. It seeks to support, befriend, and bond the women of the parish as they seek to integrate faith with their vocations as married, single and religious Catholic women of the twenty first century. The giving and receiving of spiritual support is the fruit of the women s gathering which takes place in the prayerful setting of our parish every third Friday evening of the month at 7:30PM in the St. Clare Room. Please contact Joanne Bock at if you wish further information. Bible Study: Held Tuesdays from 7PM to 8PM, in the St. Francis Center, is on a summer break. 4 A note from Father Richard: THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: The Gospel reading for the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time recounts the miracle of Jesus walking on water and calming the sea. In listening to this miracle story, we are reminded of God s presence to us in moments of doubt and fear an important lesson for three men in today s readings: Elijah, Peter, and Paul. Matthew 14:22-33 The disciples weren t prepared to see Jesus walking on water. They had already witnessed plenty of miracles, but this miracle was different. This one wasn t to heal anyone or provide for anyone. This miracle seemed more like a manifestation: a clear revelation of Jesus divine power. But the disciples were slow to get the message. It wasn t until the storm ended and the disciples were safe that they made their profession of faith, Truly, you are the Son of God. The disciples faith seems to have been dependent upon the personal experience of being saved. This is what Jesus wants to do for every one of us. He became man to save us. He died on the cross to take away our fears, to forgive our sins, and to give us eternal life. These aren t just stories about someone else s life. This is the story of our life. As with Peter, Jesus says to us, Come. May we respond with confidence, putting our trust in the One who has the power to calm the storms in our lives too. Questions of the Week Matthew 14:22-33: When have you cried out to God, Lord, save me!? 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a: Where do you most often encounter the presence of God? Romans 9:1-5: What deeply troubles you about your fellow Christian believers? ST.CLARE- AUGUST 11: St. Clare was born in Assisi in She followed the example of her townsmen St. Francis in the life of poverty, and became the foundress of the Order of Poor Clare nuns. She led an austere life, rich in the Practice of charity and loving care. She died in With St. Clare of Assisi we come to one of those infrequent instances when a pope assigned the area of patronage himself. In 1958, Pope Pius XII named St. Clare patron of television. He based his decision on the testimony of one of the witnesses in Clare s canonization proceedings. One Christmas Eve, Clare was so ill she could not leave her bed to attend Midnight Mass. After all the nuns had left for the chapel, Clare sighed and said, Look, Lord God, I have been left here alone with you. At that moment, she had a vision of the Mass. Not only could she see what was happening in the distant church, but she could also hear the organ music and the singing as clearly as if she were present. Pope Pius interpreted this miracle as the first live broadcast. ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE, OFM CONV.: August 14 is the feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe. He was born in Poland, Jan. 7, He entered the Order of Friars Minor Conventual and was ordained a priest in Rome in His ardent love for Mary the Virgin Mother of God inspired him to found a sodality which he called the Militia of Mary Immaculate. This he promoted in his native land and in other countries. His missionary activity in Japan was also placed under the patronage of the Immaculate Virgin. On returning to Poland, he endured many trials as he worked in the area of Oswiecm in the district of Cracow during World War II. On the night of August 3, 1941, a prisoner successfully escaped from the same prison in which St. Maximilian was held. In reprisal, the commandant ordered death by starvation for 10 men chosen at random from the same section. One of the condemned, Sergeant Franciszek Gajowniczek, shouted out, lamenting that he would never see his wife and children again. In his stead, St. Maximilian Kolbe, who had remained standing all night long during the selection of the condemned, stepped forward and offered his own life in exchange for this man. Ten days later, on August 14, 1941, having led the other 9 condemned prisoners in prayers and hymns; St. Maximilian was given a lethal injection of carbolic acid. He brought his life of activity to a close by offering himself as a victim of love at Auschwitz. He was canonized a saint on October 10, THE FRIARS: August 15 is the anniversary of the Friars taking their vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience in the Franciscan Community: Fr. Sam - 64 years, Fr. Richard 51 years, Fr. Germain 49 years. You have received the gift of faith from God and St. Mark Parish has helped nourish that faith. Please remember St. Mark in your will. 5 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated every year on August 15, is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a holy day of obligation. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, exercising papal infallibility, declared in "Munificentissimus Deus" that it is a dogma of the Church "that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." As a dogma, the Assumption is a required belief of all Catholics; anyone who publicly dissents from the dogma, Pope Pius declared, "has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith." Congratulations and best wishes to all graduates of the class of 2014!! Gracious God, you blessed me with the gift of my child and entrusted me with her/his care. Now she/he leaves this home and begins a new life apart from me. Surround her/him with good people and watch over her/him each day. And let her/him know that I will always be near whenever she/he may need me. Heal any hurts we may harbor with one another and forgive our failings as we learn to be in a new kind of relationship with each other. And when the sight of her/his empty room pierces my heart with sadness, may I find comfort in knowing that my child is your child too, filled with your grace and sheltered by your love. Amen. 5
