2 Introduction: The Dean of Bradford Our programme for 2018 continues with some significant events as we move towards the centenary of the WW1 Armistice. In early May, Professor Jolyon Mitchell continues our Arts and Theology lecture series when he speaks on the topic of Swords into ploughshares: building peace through the Arts. Later in May the German Choir of London brings a concert entitled Blessed are the Peacemakers, as they set out to remind us of people who tried to shorten the war. Our Cathedral Choir will be performing with them in a gesture of partnership and music-making together. Our Artspace exhibitions are particularly interesting and varied this season. May sees Sarah Harris showing her elegant prints of Yorkshire in an exhibition entitled Coast to Dale. We have seen Antonio Pacitti s paintings and drawings before, but we now see his ceramic pots with his wife s poems accompanying in a fascinating pairing in the church s Ordinary Time. We heard some of Diane Pacitti s poems at Easter 2015, and her poetry evening on Monday 9 July is not to be missed. To change the subject completely and to mark the beginning of the new football season, we exhibit Nudrat Afza s photographs of City Girls, the female supporters at Bradford City FC. ACT brings us Shakespeare s Twelfth Night; the Cathedral Choir and the choir Chordiality sing for us; the Bradford Literature Festival again brings us Sacred Poetry; and the Tuesday@Eleven coffee concerts and Wednesday@One organ recitals continue. We are spoilt for choice! 7 Events 5 April to 6 May RECLUSE: THE LIFE AND WORK OF WILLIAM CAPLING STEVENS On 9 January 1911 William was found dead in his Saltaire home; his body had lain undiscovered for three weeks. He was a talented artist, but due to his reclusive nature, never achieved the recognition he deserved. These paintings are from a private collection and have not been shown publicly since The exhibition also gives us the opportunity to reflect on how we, as individuals and as a society, respond to people who are reclusive in nature. Wednesday 2 May at 7.00pm PROFESSOR JOLYON MITCHELL SWORDS INTO PLOUGHSHARES: BUILDING PEACE THROUGH THE ARTS How can arms be transformed into a wide range of arts? Drawing upon examples from locations such as Southern Africa and the Middle East, Professor of Communications, Arts & Religion at the University of Edinburgh, Jolyon Mitchell, explores how the phrase swords into ploughshares is being brought to life in unexpected ways. Lecture supported by The Montgomery Trust. 10 May to 10 June SARAH HARRIS: COAST TO DALE Sarah Harris latest collection of screen prints celebrates the diversity of her home region and pays particular attention to the relationship between manmade and natural elements that are entwined into our landscapes. Working from her original pen drawings, each print is a limited edition and hand printed by the artist in her Rawdon studio. I have always enjoyed the exploration of landscapes and I combine this curiosity for my surroundings with my practice, endeavouring to produce an image that brings you into the reality of that scene, whilst evoking a feeling of nostalgia and sense of discovery. 10 Events Sunday 27 May at 6.30pm THE GERMAN CHOIR OF LONDON: BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS The diverse, international group of singers that is the German Choir of London, blends choral tradition with musical innovation and has a particular passion for German music, language and culture. The Choir is touring cathedrals and churches in the UK and Belgium to commemorate the end of the First World War, and is remembering in particular the peacemakers who attempted to prevent or shorten the conflict. Bradford Cathedral Choir is delighted to be joining in with this concert. FREE entry with retiring collection. Saturday 16 June at 6.30pm 15 June to 16 July ANTONIO PACITTI AND DIANE PACITTI: POTS & POETRY Following the 2015 Lenten and Easter exhibitions of Antonio Pacitti s drawings and paintings, this event focusses on his experimentation with clay. Sculptural hand-built pots and earth tones contrast with the vibrant glazes and sweeping decoration of the wheel work. Poems by the artist s wife Diane Pacitti explore the rich Biblical theme of wells and vessels. Poetry evening with Diane Pacitti Monday 9 July at 7.00pm. FREE EVENT BRADFORD CATHEDRAL CHOIR IN CONCERT Bradford Cathedral Choir will be performing a wonderful selection of choral music for summer time, in the beautiful surroundings of the cathedral building. Tickets available from and from the Cathedral on Saturday 7 July at 7.30pm CHORDIALITY PRESENTS CHORAL CLASSICS INCLUDING MOZART S REQUIEM Chordiality is a forty-strong mixed voice choir based in Bradford. This year we celebrate 25 years singing together with a concert of choral classics with soloists, organ and orchestra, including Lydian String Quartet and Notability, conducted by Peter A Sherlock. 14 Events Sunday 8 July BRADFORD LITERATURE FESTIVAL: SACRED POETRY Bradford Literature Festival comes to a contemplative close with its annual celebration of divine music and verse from across the religious spectrum. Performed by ACT (Actors' Community Theatre) in the Cathedral grounds, in the Cathedral if wet. Thursday to Saturday at 7.15pm and Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets 10 / 7 concessions available from and Bradford Cathedral on Nudrat Afza was immediately drawn to Bradford City s female supporters after a chance invitation to watch a game revealed to her a previously unknown world of excitement and emotion. Having received permission from Bradford City to take photos of the crowd inside the ground, Nudrat embarked upon a two-year photographic project that captured the passion, commitment and energy of the female fans of an English football team.
