2 H O L Y R E D E E M E R P A R I S H N E W S O rdinary Time began on Tuesday, January 10, and continues through Tuesday, February 28, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season. It will resume when the Easter season ends, that is, on Monday, June 5, the day following Pentecost. Gospel Thoughts... Change. The world for Jesus shifts. John the Baptist is arrested. Jesus withdraws to Galilee and moves to Capernaum. Now he begins to preach. Our lifetime journey is full of change. Like Jesus, circumstances may motivate us to press forward. It s as if all is in alignment. Now it is our turn to begin a new phase in life. When was the last time you made a profound shift in your life? When we feel the movement of the Spirit, God is beckoning us to take our rightful and necessary place in mission. Daily prayer 2017, LTP, page 57. Meat Pies, Sweet Pies so many Pies! A HUGE Note of Thanks to our Catholic Women s League who put their hearts and hands into making pies in time for Christmas, and to all those who supported this through their purchases. Funds raised in this endeavor totaled $2, All proceeds will go to Holy Redeemer s Raise the Roof Building Fund Campaign! Well done ladies! Jesus said Come, follow me. I want you to gather people into your nets. Matthew 4.19 Who has called and empowered you to minister? How did you respond? How did your response change your life? Bishop Marcel to Celebrate Regional Mass at H.R. this Tuesday, Jan. 24th at 4:15 PM On Jan 24th the priests and deacons of our region will gather for a meeting in the afternoon at Holy Redeemer Church. Following, an invitation is extended for all to join with them as they celebrate Mass at 4:15 p.m. Prayers will be offered for Vocations. Ministry Information & Support Meeting People in any ministry or any group at Holy Redeemer are asked to attend this following meeting: SUNDAY, JANUARY 22ND, 2017 AT 12 NOON This meeting is held for the following purpose: 1. To implement the diocesan Code of Conduct in our parish 2. To obtain feedback regarding ministries in the parish and how to better support them 3. To introduce this year s liturgical theme of Grace for the parish PLEASE INFORM THE OFFICE TO SAY YOU WILL BE ATTENDING. CALL THANK YOU FOR BEING INVOLVED! Next meeting for the Social Justice Committee is Monday, Jan. 23 at 7pm in the upper hall. All Welcome! Musician Needed - Keyboard Player or Guitarist - for Sunday Morning 9 AM Mass. Music during Mass is a way of assisting us to prayerfully enter into our Eucharistic Celebration. A Liturgy without music would be like: a song that is spoken; a dance with no rhythm; a symphony with no instruments; a celebration on life support... Whether we are singing or listening, music has the power to bring us into an experience beyond the words to a personal encounter with Christ himself, the Word made flesh. If you play an instrument that could assist us in our Sunday Morning Liturgy, please speak with Fr. Peter or contact the office at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church

3 H O L Y R E D E E M E R P A R I S H N E W S Ash Wednesday is March 1, 2017 We Burn our old blessed palms for this Year s Ashes As we anticipate the coming of Lent, we draw your attention to the blessed palms within our homes. Call or the office to be sure we have your new mailing address before income tax receipts are mailed out. Please help us stay up to date! Feast Day: January 24th Saint Francis de Sales: Born into a noble family in Annecy in 1597, he was ordained priest and worked strenuously for the Church by distributing printed essays on the Catholic faith; he became Bishop of Geneva, exemplary in his pastoral care. He also wrote The Introduction to the Devout Life, a handbook to holiness. He is patron saint of journalists and writers. The 2017 theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has been selected. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary year of the beginnings of the Reformation, the theme: "Reconciliation The Love of Christ Compels Us" (2 Corinthians 5:14-20) has been chosen. The materials for the 2017 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has two accents: reflection upon the main concerns of the churches marked by Martin Luther's Reformation and secondly recognizing the pain of the subsequent deep divisions which afflicted the unity of the Church. In selecting this theme, it is viewed as an opportunity to take steps toward reconciliation. A Prayer Breakfast at Glad Tidings Church 1101 Regent St., Sudbury, ON To pray and witness for Christian Unity. When: Tuesday, January 24th, :00 A.M. Full Breakfast: $14.00 For details and registration: RSVP by January 20th, Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church

5 H O L Y R E D E E M E R P A R I S H N E W S A Fond Farewell to our Grace filled Volunteer as you Retire Well done, good and faithful servant. Dear Grace, It is with a heart of gratitude we offer you this sincere message as you retire from a life of dedication to parish ministry. On behalf of many we take this opportunity to express our thanks and appreciation for your endless labour of love, your readiness to complete a task, and your kindness to the many faces whom you've encountered. You have been faithfully committed to your role in and about Holy Redeemer for well over a decade. You've learned and mastered so many tasks to ensure the upkeep of our home, from sacristan, to funeral luncheons, folding bulletins, collection counting, ensuring church candles are ordered, organized and always readily available, to learning how to use a computer and maintaining office procedures. Your gentle assurance of always placing the other ahead of yourself has been evident every step along the way. Grace, you are a huge example of responding to the call of Christ. How blessed we have been by your loyalty and daily presence. Your willingness to use your gifts and abilities has strengthened the mission and ministry of this church and your many years of service has been a huge inspiration to which we are truly grateful. For all your time, effort, hard work, and prayers, please accept the thanks and appreciation of this parish, its leaders and staff. You have truly been a blessing to this congregation! May God Bless and keep you and may his face shine always upon you. Affectionately, from all, in your home away from home. Just because it is Ordinary Time, it doesn't mean we can't use symbols well Advent has a wreath. Christmas has a tree. Lent has Ashes and palms. Easter has fire and water and lilies and signs of new life. Symbols are so important for us to allow religious meaning to enter into our lives. Through symbols we actually assign meaning to ordinary things. It is a very incarnate and sacramental thing to do. What symbols can we use during Ordinary Time? The liturgical color for Ordinary Time is green. Green is meant to symbolize hope, to be a symbol of life. Several things are possible to take advantage of this seasonal color. We can imagine taking a green plant that we already have, or getting one, and placing it, or a cutting from it, in a prominent place in our house to say that we are going to be hopeful in God's love for us. God's love, like the life flowing through this plant, is faithful. When we look at the plant, we can be conscious of an inner desire - perhaps expressed in a verbal prayer - that God give us hope and trust. And, when we water the plant, or perhaps give it plant food, we are nourishing this life, as God nourishes us. A simple symbol, but it can be a very ordinary time gift for us. To read more go to...
