1 Sts. Peter and paul catholic church Centennial Campaign Prayer Heavenly Father, give us the grace to build your Kingdom in our Diocese. We can only accomplish this noble task by allowing You to expand our hearts. Grant us compassionate hearts for the poor and suffering among us, hopeful hearts for the men now in seminary, grateful hearts to provide care for the well-being of our retired priests, and zealous hearts for the formation of our Catholic college students. Established 1904 October 2, th Sunday in Ordinary Time As we look to the future and the celebration of the Centennial of our Diocese, we want to give You our faithful hearts. It is only with faithful hearts that our Diocesan campaign will bear fruit and assist You in the building up of Your Kingdom. With Mary our Mother, and moved by the Holy Spirit, we make this prayer through Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. We entrust our humble efforts to You, with a plea for success, as we reach out to those who need us. Amen STAFF: Rev. Fr. Mark Derise Pastor Bishop Emeritus Michael Jarrell In Residence Arthur F. 2 Page Two 5 Lesser-known (but Totally Amazing) Marian apparitions Part 3 (Continued from last week s bulletin) Most Catholics, and non-catholics for that matter, have heard of the big three Marian apparitions. The visions of the Blessed Mother at Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City, Lourdes in France, and Fatima in Portugal are well known and recognized for their importance. But those aren t the only times Mary has stopped by to visit this valley of tears. Here are five of her lesser-known visits: 5. Our Lady of Akita, in Yuzawadai, Japan In 1973, Sister Agnes KatsukoSasagawa, who had received healing from multiple health problems after drinking water from Lourdes, went to live with a group of religious sisters in the remote area of Yuzawadai, Japan. Sasagawa, who was completely deaf at this time, reported apparitions, stigmata, and tears streaming from the face of a wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, claims which were corroborated by other sisters in the community. Sister Agnes reported hearing the Blessed Virgin Mary call to her and offer her messages such as, Pray very much the prayers of the Rosary. I alone am able still to save you from the calamities which approach, and Many men in this world afflict the Lord. I desire souls to console Him to soften the anger of the Heavenly Father. I wish, with my Son, for souls who will repair by their suffering and their poverty for the sinners and ingrates. In addition to the messages, the weeping statue was broadcast on TV Tokyo Channel 12. By June of 1982, Sasagawa, who had been diagnosed as incurably deaf, had her hearing completely restored. In addition, a Korean woman, Teresa Chun Sun Ho, prayed for healing from a brain tumor through the intercession of Our Lady of Akita and received both visions of Our Lady and a complete healing. The local ordinary, Bishop John Shojiro, authorized the veneration of the Holy Mother of Akita in 1984, pending definitive judgment from the Holy See. 7 Page Seven TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We ve been thinking about names lately, and there is hardly any tradition older than changing one s name when accepting a new vocation in life. In the time of Jesus, people would normally wait until the eighth day after birth for the naming of a child, partly because of the fragility of infant life, when the eighth day would mark the end of a survival crisis, and also because the elders would look for some clues as to the child s identity. In Jewish life then as now, it was not the custom to name a child after a living parent; notice there are no juniors in the genealogy of Jesus. Remember also how the relatives complained to Zachary and Elizabeth that no one in their family was ever named John. Then there are the changed names, Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah, Saul became Paul, Simon became Peter. This spills over into Western culture in many ways, such as British royalty taking new names at coronation. It s anybody s guess, for example, whether the Prince of Wales intends to be King Charles II, or become Henry, or Edward, or George if he wishes. Members of religious orders have until recent years swapped baptismal names for new ones, and the latest pope made a switch as well. Secular life has many parallels, and movie stars like Cary Grant, Judy Garland, and John Wayne might not have shone so brightly as Archie Leach, Frances Gumm, and Marion Morrison. There are some compelling reasons in our tradition for taking a new name when undertaking a new mission, yet also a clear preference for choosing the right baptismal name from the start! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. LET GO AND LET GOD Many twelve-step programs use the phrase Let go and let God. In all their simplicity, these ive words are the heart of today s readings. For people who struggle with addictive behavior, these words plainly remind us that we can t manage, control, or manipulate certain areas of our lives. How many times can we look back in our lives and ind evidence of some plan at work other than our own? These are the moments when, for whatever reasons, we let someone greater than ourselves work the plan. We probably didn t even recognize at the time that we were letting go of anything, but in retrospect, we see God s hand and loving presence. It is our awareness of these moments that gives us the courage and initiative to let go again later on. It is this courage and initiative that are highlighted in today s readings. We come to call it faith. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the mid-1960s, many religious congregations that had maintained a custom of assigning new names to their members allowed a return to baptismal names. The practice stems from the origins of monastic life, when a desire to lee the world and its enchantments caused a severe break with family life and commitments. A new name signi ied that the old person had died and a new one was coming to life. Some orders even spread funeral palls over their entrants and tolled the funeral bell. On a practical level, in a crowded monastery of a few hundred monks or nuns, it made sense not to have six Brother Alfrics or nine Sister Clares. The one name, one person rule worked well. In more recent times, a young woman entering the convent might be given her parents names as a way of honoring their generosity, so Hilda might become Sister Philip Margaret after her father and mother. A cherished name in the order might be bestowed on a newcomer so that there would always be a Brother Owen around, or a young person might adopt the name of a beloved saint. A handful of religious congregations, like Mother Barat s Religious of the Sacred Heart, always used family names. Many monasteries still bestow a new name at the end of probation. Other religious institutes have revived the custom of changing their candidates names at the end of novitiate, although for the most part religious who were around at the time of the Council were happy to get their baptismal names back. A few, of course, cherished their acquired names and have held on to them, so convents still hold the creativity badge for naming. Where else today can you ind great names today like Madeleva, Siena, and Celestina? Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. (Please clip and pray daily during this hurricane season) O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.
