2 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today's Gospel, it will be a year acceptable to the Lord. And Jesus surely didn't mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the arrival of God s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God's word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, Today is holy... do not be sad, and do not weep. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God's word. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading -- Rejoicing in the LORD must be your strength (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). Psalm -- Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life (Psalm 19). Second Reading -- In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body (1 Corinthians 12:12-30 [12-14, 27]). Gospel -- The Spirit of the Lord has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21) READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Heb 9:15, 24-28; Ps 98:1-6; Mk 3:22-30 Tuesday: Heb 10:1-10; Ps 40:2, 4ab, 7-8a, 10, 11; Mk 3:31-35 Wednesday: Heb 10:11-18; Ps 110:1-4; Mk 4:1-20 Thursday: Heb 10:19-25; Ps 24:1-6; Mk 4:21-25 Friday: Heb 10:32-39; Ps 37:3-6, 23-24, 39-40; Mk 4:26-34 Saturday: Mal 3:1-4; Ps 24:7-10; Heb 2:14-18; Lk 2:22-40 [22-32] Sunday: Jer 1:4-5, 17-19; Ps 71:1-6, 15, 17; 1 Cor 12: :13 [13:4-13]; Lk 4:21-30 Morning Prayer Jesus Lord, I offer you this new day because I believe in you, love you, hope all things in you and thank you for your blessings. I am sorry for having offended you and forgive everyone who has offended me. Lord, look on me and leave in me peace & courage and your humble wisdom that I may serve others with joy, and be pleasing to you all day. St. Jude Prayer for Mentors St. Jude, fill me with your hope today. May the Holy Spirit guide me, so I look at most every encounter as a chance to show respect to others. Help me as I try to be an example for others and to spread kindness through my words and attitude. May I improve someone s day today, and may they keep the hope your shared with me moving to someone new. Prayer for Awareness Light above all other light, and within my soul. Dear God, your grace is my gift. In the dawn of dusk of each day, in all the big and small moments of my life, I pray I will recognize the unconditional love hat is the gift of your grace. When I see you in all that I do, my spirit is fortified, my soul is blessed and I am grateful. Prayer for all who show God s Mercy Father, we live in a world where there are so many hurting people that at times it can become overwhelming and we find ourselves stepping back, and almost hoping that the problem will go away. And yet Jesus demonstrated a life that over-flowed with deep-compassion and tender-mercy towards all those that are wounded and abused, troubled or hurt. Help us to stretch out a wiling arm of comfort, when we see other people hurting or in pain, and may we extend a godly mercy that only comes from You to those that are the unlovely or the unlovable. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ become our inner clothing and may the love of the Father be the outer garment that we wear, so that by Your Spirit we may be empowered to bless and help all those with whom we come in contact. May all we say and do be a witness to the grace and mercy of God and we pray that You will give us opportunities to minister Your Mercy and love to Your praise and glory, in Jesus name we pray.

Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle's flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. You must pour your life out like Christ so that you may be filled with the light of his love. Pray for the Priest and the Seminarians Jan. 27: Rev. Godwin Nzeh, CMF & Johnathan Harris Jan. 28: Rev. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas St. Thomas Aquinas is known as the greatest philosopher and theologian of the intellectually rich 13thcentury, and for many hundreds of years the work of this Patron Saint of Catholic Schools dominated the curriculum of seminaries and colleges around the world. He has been called one of the most profound teachers on Eucharistic doctrine, not only expounding on the mysterious processes in which bread and wine become the actual Body and Blood of Christ, but coining the word transubstantiation used to describe it. And, because he wrote not only for scholars but also for the simple Catholic worshiper down the ages, the church has officially accorded him the titles Angelic, Common and Universal Doctor of the Church. Although not definitively known, it is generally believed Thomas Aquinas was born about the year 1225 at the castle of his father, the Count of Aquino, in Rocca Secca near Naples, Italy. A precocious child, he amazed his teachers at the Monastery of Monte Cassino, where he received his early education, with one persistent question: What is God? It was a question he would reflect upon all his life. When attending the University of Naples, he was attracted to the intellectual apostolate of the Dominican Friars and joined the order. Outraged at his rejection of their own plans for him to become a prestigious abbot, and looking down on Dominicans as beggars, his aristocratic family kidnapped him on his way to Paris and imprisoned him at Rocca Secca. It took almost two years and the intercession of the Pope and the Emperor before his family finally gave up and allowed him to rejoin the Dominicans. St. Albert the Great, who taught him Aristotelian philosophy at Paris and Cologne, soon spotted his genius and became his mentor. When Thomas was nicknamed the Dumb Ox by his classmates, most likely because of his bulky frame and quiet manner, Albert prophesied: You call him a dumb ox, but I tell you this dumb ox will bellow so loudly that his bellowing will fill the world. Indeed, this master teacher attracted thousands of people to his public lectures, compiled more than 20 volumes of work, was consulted by popes and a king (Louis IX), and showed that one could use pure reason, not faith, to defend theological tenets such as the existence of God. His greatest work, the Summa Theologica (Summary of Theology), which he began in 1265, is, according to he Oxford Dictionary of Saints, a comprehensive treatise on all the Christian mysteries. Despite his reputation as a thinker, Thomas remained a humble, devout priest who resisted attempts to make him a bishop, fasted frequently, and spent whole nights in prayer. He told his intimate friend, St. Bonaventure, that it was while he leaned his head against the tabernacle and turned his mind in sorrow to the image of the crucified Christ, that he derived all his learning. Once, when Thomas was lost in prayer while living in the Dominican priory in Naples, a sacristan concealed himself to watch. He saw Thomas lifted into the air and heard Christ speak to him from the crucifix on the chapel wall, Thomas, you have written well of me. What reward will you have? Lord, nothing but yourself, he heard Thomas reply. Soon after, while saying Mass on December 6, 1273 in that same chapel, Thomas had a profound revelation. He told his longtime secretary that compared to this experience, All that I have written seems like straw to me. After that, he never wrote again, leaving his Summa Theologica unfinished. On the day of Thomas passing, March 7, 1274, Albert the Great, then in Cologne, suddenly broke into tears among the community and exclaimed, Brother Thomas Aquinas, my son in Christ, the light of the Church, is dead! God has revealed it to me. As a parish faith community, we celebrate our patron s Feast Day on the Saturday evening closest to January 28, the day when the universal church honors this great man of faith. Hear the prayers we offer for our sick brothers and sisters. May all who suffer pain, illness or disease realize that they are chosen to be saints, and know that they are joined to Christ in his suffering for the salvation of the world, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Trust in God s Mercy Gracious Father, I thank you for the mercy you have shown in forgiving my sins and for the peace that comes from being reconciled with you and your church. O God, you are faithful, and you never abandon those who hope in you. I know that my redemption from sin and death has been purchased at the cost of your Son s blood. In return for this priceless gift, I resolve today to renew my trust in your word of pardon. In times of doubt, when painful memories of past sin threaten to destroy the peace you have given, let the power of your Holy Spirit east out all self condemnation and give me greater confidence in your word of pardon. Teach me to encourage others so they, too, may seek your tender compassion and come to know your peace, which nothing can take away. I pray this in the name of Jesus, your Son, in whom you have restored me to life. We will now be burning Sanctuary Lamp candle in memory or in honor of someone. 8 Not a Children s Game In this faulty perspective, the plea Lord have mercy in the liturgy might be seen as similar to the cry for mercy in a game children place called the same name: Mercy. In this tournament of strength, two kids interlock hands and squeeze with all their might until the weaker one s wrist is twisted in pain and he begs his opponent to stop by crying out, Mercy! Biblical mercy is not like that. Rather, the relationship of mercy is better exemplified by the parable of the Prodigal Son. In this story, the wayward son, suffering in his misery, begins to see the sinfulness of his actions. He humbly repents and returns home to his father. According to John Paul II, the father in the story see so clearly the good which has been achieved [in his son] thanks to a mysterious radiation of truth and love, that he seems to forget all the evil which does not merely pardon his son his change of heart, his sorrow for his sins, and his noble desire to get his life back on track. And the father rejoice in seeing this good in his son and eagerly welcomes him back. This reminds me of a time when I was watching two of my children playing in a different room, unaware of my presence. The older sister was four and the younger brother was two at the time. The little brother was playing with his favorite toy in his lap when, suddenly, the older one walked up to him and snatched the toy out of his hands, triumphantly ready to walk away with it. My little boy predictably had a look of horror on his face and was about to wail. I was ready to march into the room and issue discipline for this injustice when I noticed the older sister do something incredible: She put the toy back in his hands and gave him a big hug, saying, I m so sorry! Here you are. I couldn't believe my eyes! A second earlier, my blood pressure was rising with the cries of my toddler who had his toy stolen from him. But now I saw that my daughter felt badly about what she had done and wanted to set things right. She clearly didn't like the fact that she hurt her brother s feelings. She asked for forgiveness. So instead of wanting to punish her wrongdoing (She too his toy). Even more, I saw her heart (she loves her brother, felt badly about hurting him, and sincerely apologized-all on her own initiative!). I think this is similar to how our Heavenly Father views us when we sin and sincerely repent. He sees not just the legal fact of our sins. He also sees out contrite heart. As the Psalmist once said, A broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise (Ps 51:17). Indeed, a sincerely sorrowful heart is irresistible to God. This is the proper context for understanding mercy. Mercy is not to be seen as a higher power like a monarch randomly pardoning criminals in his kingdom. It is about God s love for us, even in the face of our sins.
