2 Page Two Dear Parishioners, In the Gospel today we hear about Jesus going to the synagogue on the Sabbath according to his custom. Last Sunday I preached about a man at the low point who asked God what to do and God told him to keep holy the Sabbath. The man went to confession and started going to Mass regularly. This was from the true story of Frank & Genie Summers in Go You Are Sent. If Jesus kept holy the Sabbath, how much more should we. Why is it so important that we go to Mass on Sunday in order to keep the Lord s Day holy: 1. We show God that we love Him and are willing to give Him back one of the 168 hours of the week, which is less than 1% of our time. 2. We give Him thanks for all He has done for us, especially his death on the cross. 3. We are formed by the scripture readings, the homily and the prayers in the truth. 4. If we are in the state of Grace, we receive the incredible gift of Jesus himself in the Holy Eucharist. 5. We show God that we want to belong to His family. These are just a few reasons why it is a mortal sin to miss Mass. So I encourage you to remain faithful to Sunday worship and then even during the week if you can. I ve been going to daily Mass since 1981 and it has been the greatest blessing in my life. Holy hours in our Adoration Chapel is another great way of being with Jesus. We have need of people at these hours: Mondays and Thursdays at 10:00am, Tuesdays at 12:00noon, and Fridays at 1100am & 2:00pm. If you are able to take that time slot, please contact Judy Semar at Last Sunday I preached on the 10 Commandments For Marriage that someone put together. Here they are: Thou Shalt: 1. Not take thy partner for granted 2. Not expect perfection of each other 3. Be patient, loving, understanding, kind and true 4. Tend the garden of love daily 5. 3 Page Three This Sunday we will have the Holy Hour once again at 2:00pm to pray for the protection of marriage between man and woman, for the pro-life cause and for religious liberty. All are invited to attend. This is National Catholic Schools Week. The theme this year is Catholic Schools Raise the Standards. I encourage you all to send your children to our Catholic school. Dr. Robert Richard and the whole staff are doing a great job of forming our children in the faith and educating them about all of God s creation. It s been a great joy to have our Catholic school as part of our parish mission and ministry. I love you all. FRONT GATE SECURITY We recently installed a lock on the front gate which requires that someone in the of ice allow you access. The process is quite simple, a button on the gate is pressed, a bell sounds in the front of ice and once you ve identi ied yourself access is granted. So far so good, but please be patient as we learn all the nuances of the system. 6 Page Six HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS Please join us for our monthly Holy Hour for Vocations and for the Spiritual Renewal of all priests on Monday, February 4, from 6:00-7:00pm at St Patrick Catholic Church, 406 E Pinhook Road. For those who want extra time in prayer, recitation of the Rosary will begin at 5:30pm. The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation is a 24 -week study course that makes reading the Bible not only easy, but exciting. In this study, you will learn the major people, places, events and themes of the Biblegetting the big picture of salvation history. Perhaps for the irst time in your life, you will understand the overview of the Bible story. Only if people are interested will this study be offered. The cost for the study materials/binder would be $44.95 per person. The two hour weekly class (which would begin in the fall) would include a video presentation by Jeff Cavins and small group discussions on assigned Bible readings. "FOOD FOR THE JOURNEY" The Central Region of the Diocese of Lafayette presents "Food for the Journey" -- a monthly lunchtime speaker series designed to help Catholics live out their faith in their daily lives. Come Follow Me Retreat The Diocese of Lafayette is again joining with the Dioceses of Baton rouge and Lake Charles to offer a discernment retreat for men on February 1-3, 2013 this year at the St Charles Center in Lake Charles. It is open to all interested men in high school, college or professional life, ages who are considering the call to the priesthood. The weekend will feature talks given by seminarians and priests from each of the three dioceses. Ample time will be given for participants to pray and to consider the particular vocation God has given them. There is no cost to attend this retreat. Deadline to register is Monday, January 28.
