3 H O L Y R E D E E M E R P A R I S H N E W S The Word This Week In the Cycle of Sunday Readings, the oldest are those of Year A in Lent these Gospels have accompanied the Church for many centuries. We must realise why: Lent was originally the time of immediate preparation of candidates for Baptism at Easter (something which has been reintroduced to the Church by RCIA): those already baptised used it as a time to prepare for the renewal of Baptismal promises. This is why so much of the Scripture in Lent is about Baptism, New Life and Salvation. What is the new life of Baptism? What are we set free from? What is sin? We begin Lent by hearing about sin and temptation; the Gospel will tell us of Jesus own temptations, something he shares with us, though he did not sin. The other Scripture readings prepare us for the Gospel, in which Jesus, the new Adam, triumphs over temptation. Diocese of Salford Office for Liturgy Prayer & Reflection Service The Seven Last Words of Christ All of Christ s teachings were powerful words of life. His seven last sayings as He died for us are worthy of intense consideration. Had you stood in the crowd that day watching Jesus die, you would have heard Him utter seven astounding statements. Remarkable words, not only due to His duress, but because of the deep meaning they conveyed. And in these seven last statements of Christ we find a lasting example of how we must also think and live! They should change our lives. Please join us for this beautiful prayerful and music filled service on March 9, 2017 at 7pm Holy Redeemer Parish 1887 Bancroft Drive All sessions are from 7pm to 9pm and will be offered concurrently at two locations. Marie, ON This celebration is an opportunity for priests, deacons, members of the Diocesan Order of Service, Religious women and men and lay faithful to experience, along with the bishop, the bond of communion and solidarity within this spiritual family called the Church of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie. All are invited to participate in this special diocesan celebration. N.B. MASS CANCELLED AT H.R. CHURCH ON THIS DAY Week 1: March 5 Women keep the land in their hearts in Paraguay Supporting women is a priority for Development and Peace Caritas Canada. For this year s Share Lent campaign, we invite you to listen to the voices of women who are working to build the world of tomorrow Women at the heart of change. You will find testimonials from the four corners of the globe inside our Mini-magazine, found in this bulletin. Our first testimonial is from Marta and Silvia, two women from Paraguay who are members of an Indigenous women s farming association supported by Development and Peace Caritas Canada. I wish that there was land for everyone, that women were free [and] that they had the freedom to organize and defend their rights, Silvia tells us. Women have always been at the heart of our organization! Did you know that in 1979, Development and Peace led a campaign to support the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, in Argentina, whose children and grandchildren disappeared under the military dictatorship? 5 Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church Following our Kitchen clean-up, numerous containers have been found to be left behind. Please look at the trolley as you exit the church to claim what belongs to you. Whatever useful items remain will be returned to the kitchen and placed in cupboards for future use. Thank you!

6 H O L Y R E D E E M E R P A R I S H N E W S Throughout the liturgical year, the Catholic Church makes certain changes to the Mass to reflect the liturgical season. Next to the change in the color of the priest's vestments, the absence of the Alleluia during Lent is probably the most obvious. Why don't Roman Catholics sing the Alleluia during Lent? The Meaning of the Alleluia The Alleluia comes to us from Hebrew, and it means "praise Yahweh." Traditionally, it has been seen as the chief term of praise of the choirs of angels, as they worship around the throne of God in Heaven. It is, therefore, a term of great joy, and our use of the Alleluia during Mass is a way of participating in the angels' worship. It is also a reminder that the Kingdom of Heaven is already established on earth, in the form of the Church, and that our participation in Mass is a participation in Heaven. Our Lenten Exile During Lent, however, our focus is on the Kingdom coming, not on the Kingdom having come. The readings in the Masses for Lent and in the Liturgy of the Hours focus heavily on the spiritual journey of Old Testament Israel toward the coming of Christ, and the salvation of mankind in His death and resurrection. We, too, are on a spiritual journey, toward the Second Coming and our future life in Heaven. In order to emphasize that journey, the Church, during Lent, removes the Alleluia from the Mass. We no longer sing with the choirs of angels; instead, we acknowledge our sins and practice repentance so that one day we may again have the privilege of worshiping God as the angels do. The Return of the Alleluia at Easter That day comes triumphally on Easter Sunday or, rather, at the Easter Vigil, on Holy Saturday night, when the priest chants a triple Alleluia before he reads the Gospel, and everyone present responds with a triple Alleluia. The Lord is risen; the Kingdom has come; our joy is complete; and, in concert with the angels and saints, we greet the risen Lord with shouts of "Alleluia!" Scott P. Richert Join the Call for Conscience February 6 March 31, 2017 The Government of Canada passed legislation in June 2016, legalizing euthanasia/assisted suicide. Despite wording in the legislation intended to protect doctors and facilities, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is forcing health care workers to participate in ending the lives of their patients. No other country does this. Provinces across Canada do not do this. Yet, Ontario refuses to protect doctors who object to assisted suicide/euthanasia. Please visit to learn more, join the Call for Conscience and write directly to your elected Member of Provincial Parliament asking them to protect conscience rights. IS GOD CALLING YOU TO BE A PRIEST? COME & SEE! Have you ever felt that God was calling you to something more? Have you ever considered the possibility of the priesthood? Spend a weekend in prayer, discussion and reflection with priests, faculty and seminarians at St. Peter s Seminary in London, Ontario, on March 24-26, This weekend is open to all single men 17 years of age and older. For more information or to register, please contact your parish priest or Fr. Pat Woods, Vocations Director, at or pwoods@diocesecentre.com 6 Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church

7 Lenten Retreat at Villa Loyola Theme: ARE YOU KIDDING? Remembering and reclaiming the gifts of the child Jesus said I m telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you re not even going to get a look at the Kingdom, let alone get in.
