3 Weekly Message Plenary Indulgence for the Year of St. Joseph Bishop Baker has decreed a Year of St. Joseph for the Diocese of Birmingham until May 1, 2019: the memorial of St. Joseph the Worker. As with the recent Year of Mercy and Marian Year, a plenary indulgence is offered by the Catholic Church during this time. A plenary indulgence is the forgiveness of all temporal punishment due to sin. Sacramental absolution forgives the spiritual punishment due to sin, but the temporal punishment or attachment to sin may remain. Through acts of penance and prayer, the grace offered by God may remove the temporal punishment. Otherwise, the temporal punishment is removed in Purgatory. Bishop Baker has agreed to name Our Lady of the Lake as an approved shrine for pilgrimage during the Year of St. Joseph. There are 7 steps necessary for gaining the indulgence. They are listed in the letter from Bishop Baker re-published in the bulletin (pg. 7) and posted in the foyers of the Church. The church will be open additional hours during the Year of St. Joseph. Those hours are 9:30 am until 1:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. Opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be expanded to include the three holy hours of adoration observed each month in the church.
