3 Pastor s Message Today s Feast originated in the Church of the East, hence the Greek word Epiphany which means a divine manifestation or a revelation. It is a Feast of universal scope, reminding us that Jesus came as a Savior for all people, of every land and nation. The story of the Magi, found in Matthew s Gospel has been embellished through the centuries. Matthew s simple wise men from the east have been elevated to royalty as three kings in the Christian imagination. The story has found its way into song, stained glass windows, Christmas pageants and literature. What child doesn t want to play the role of one of the kings in the Christmas pageant? Part of the age-old appeal of this splendid Feast is that it is our story too. We are hidden in the middle of it. We are, all of us, seekers and travelers, on a restless journey for meaning and truth. The story of the Magi has universal and timeless appeal. We journey through life always in search of more and in search of God. Today s Feast assures us that our search is not in vain. This story is one with a happy ending and it gives us hope and courage in our own journeys. Matthew is careful to point out that these scientists (Magi) who came from the east followed the light provided by science and it led them a long way, even to Jerusalem. However, they needed something more to complete their journey. They needed the help of the Scriptures to lead them to Bethlehem. There is a strange irony, too, in the fact that those who had the Scriptures (the chief priests and the scribes) and knew where the Messiah was to be born did not go to Bethlehem. Only the Magi went. We live in an age when science is the dominant mode of knowledge and discovery. Our lives have been immeasurably enriched by the findings of science. Each day we witness new breakthroughs in the quest for knowledge. Still, even the best scientists will tell us something more is needed if we are to address the ultimate questions of life. Faith enters in to complement science and give us a deeper truth. We do not have to choose between science and faith. When we combine good science and genuine faith we come closer to the ultimate truth that is God. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Leaving Christmas Without Leaving It.
