3 Pastor s Message This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. In some Dioceses in the United States this Feast is celebrated on the Thursday following the Sixth Sunday of Easter. So important is this Feast of the Ascension of the Lord that St. Luke tells the story twice; at the beginning of the Acts of the Apostles (our first reading today) and at the end of the Gospel (our Gospel Reading today). The Ascension is a kind of a hinge, a moment of connection between Earth and Heaven that marks both an end and a beginning. The appearances of the Risen Lord, those delightful stories that are part of the Easter season, come to an end. There begins a new life for the Disciples as they await the gift of the Holy Spirit, who will form them, empower them, and move them in a new direction. In the Gospel account Luke refers to the Ascension of the Lord with a minimum of words: He led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands and blessed them. As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to Heaven. For Luke the event seems to take place on Easter Sunday, while in the Acts of the Apostles he indicates the event took place forty days after Easter. In reality, the evangelist, St. Luke, is conveying two different interpretations of the same event. In the Gospel account he sees the Ascension as a fitting finale of the story of Jesus as he returns to the Father. In the Acts of the Apostles account of the Ascension (Acts 1:1-11), Luke narrates the same event as the beginning of the story of the mission of the Church, initiated by the Risen Lord and empowered by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Feast of the Ascension is a feast of hope. Jesus has been exalted to the right hand of God as Lord of history and the source of our own hope and confidence. As the Preface of the Mass for this day so nicely puts it: He ascended -that we, his members, might be confident of following where he, our head and founder, has gone before. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mother s Day: A special day to remember, lest we forget the love that begot us and nurtured us and sacrificed for us; yes, a mother s love. For mothers who have gone before us into glory, we make a special remembrance today. For mothers who still grace our lives with their caring presence and seem to never tire of giving (and worrying), we offer a special word of thanks. Happy Mother s Day to all the mothers in our Church. A Grief Observed: Our Parish has said a sad farewell to two of our most esteemed and respected members recently. Frank Dickinson and Marie Battaglia have gone home to the Lord. Their lives were filled with faith and goodness. They loved their faith and they loved our Church. We are all the poorer for their passing. May they shine forever in the Heaven of God s Holy Ones. Our prayers are with their grieving families. May they rest in peace and rise in glory! Healing Service & Candlelight Procession May 13 th Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament All are invited to join us on Friday, May 13 th, the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, for a 7pm Healing Service & Candlelight Procession at the Lourdes Grotto. A replica of the original miraculous Grotto in Lourdes, France was dedicated here at the Shrine in Hanceville in A stone from the original Grotto has been mounted in the Shrine Grotto for the veneration of the faithful. The Grotto is handicap accessible and wheelchairs are available, if needed. A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who make a pilgrimage to the Lourdes Grotto here by fulfilling the usual norms and conditions.
