3 Pastor s Message Disciples and Would-Be Disciples? The Gospel Reading today from Like (9:51-62) has Jesus beginning a long journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. The Galilean ministry is finished and He resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem. Something in that word resolutely conveys the sense of fierce resolve, of no turning back. The die is cast. There is a sense of urgency about it all. The road Jesus takes to Jerusalem is sign-posted with encounters, events and stopping places, without any logical or geographical progression. This serves to universalize the way of discipleship, which has nothing to do with following Jesus in our own time and place. To help us along the way, Luke describes three encounters with would-be-disciples who impose conditions or limits on their following Jesus. The first takes the initiative in approaching Jesus. He is brash and enthusiastic and confident. He needs to be tested for staying power. If you want to follow me, says Jesus, be prepared to be a powerless, dispossessed follower of a rejected Son of Man. (You mean I can t take my I.R.A. account and my S.U.V. with me?) In the second encounter, it is Jesus who takes the initiative in calling the person to follow him. We probably have a good deal of sympathy for this one who seems to make a very reasonable request of Jesus: Let me go and bury my father first. Yet, the call of Jesus was urgent and could not be delayed or put off until later. Why can t God be more reasonable?, we wonder. The third would-be-disciple wants to follow Jesus but on condition that he is allowed to First say farewell to those at home. This seems a sensible request, especially in the light of the First Reading (I Kings 19:19-21) where Elijah gave Elisha permission to go and say goodbye. But the following of Jesus has to be unswerving; not even this detour is allowed. It is strange that in all three encounters, we hear the requests, we listen to Jesus response, but we learn nothing of the outcome of the meetings. It is as though Jesus is saying to each of us: What has been the response in your situation?
