3 Pastor s Message Shall we be content to dwell on nostalgia, remembering the good old days and pining for their demise or shall we be a people of hope, trusting that God renews our world each day. The future beckons us to believe that God s creation is still unfolding. God is not finished with us yet. He has good things in store for us. The prophet Isaiah is a reliable guide on our Lenten journey. We thrill to his words in the first reading today (Is. 43:16-21) : Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; see, I am doing something new. The wonderful words of God are not exhausted. The past is always prologue. St. Paul too had to look to the future rather than dwell on the life of privilege and security he had enjoyed as a citizen of Rome and devout observer of the Mosaic Law. He came to look on everything in the past as a loss Compared to the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus as his Lord. Paul is not speaking of book knowledge about Jesus but rather of having faith in him in the sense of joyful trust. He has fallen in love with God, and forgetting what lies behind, he strains forward to what lies ahead, namely, eternal life. In the Gospel scene (John 8:1-11) Jesus finds himself between a rock and a hard place. The scribes and the pharisees try to put him in a difficult place. If he sides with the legalists, he may gain their respect but lose that of his disciples who see him as merciful. If he suggests that forgiveness should be extended to the hapless woman, it will seem that he disregards the law. We would love to know what Jesus wrote on the ground. It was enough to trigger a remembrance of sin on the part of the accusers. They walked away in silence. They, who had always so many words and quoted the law so readily and were ready to condemn, walked away. An ugly scene of potential violence is transformed into a scene of mercy and truth. It is easy to throw stones. We judge all too easily. It is not so easy to look within ourselves and ask for forgiveness and then show mercy to others. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Communal Parish Wide Celebration of Penance will take place on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. (The daily Mass will be transferred to Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m.). Fr. Jose will be here to help us celebrate the Sacrament of Confession. A specific reconciliation service written for the Year of Mercy will be used. Feast of St. Joseph Saturday, March 19th a special Mass will be offered at 9:00 a.m. All are invited to celebrate this special Feast day. Community Holy Week Service Donations Needed Our Lady of the Lake will be responsible for providing 250 sandwiches for the Community Holy Week Services to be held at Pell City United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 23rd. If you are able to donate a large loaf of regular bread you may bring it to the Church kitchen on Tuesday, March 22nd. Volunteers are also needed to prepare the sandwiches on Wednesday morning, March 23rd. We must deliver the sandwiches to the church by 10:30 am on the 23rd.
