3 Pastor s Message We continue to celebrate the gift of Easter in this blessed Easter season. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that the Resurrection was both a historical and transcendent event, a work of the Trinity offering salvation to all. (C.C.C. 639) Peter in his preaching at Pentecost in the First Reading today (Acts 2:22-33) reminds the people that they had long waited for a Messiah who would be identified by signs and wonders that could only come from God. These signs and wonders, Peter tells them, have been realized in Jesus. He is the one they have waited for. The First Letter of Peter (1:17-21) which is the Second Reading today, urges its readers to Conduct yourselves with reverence. Believers should respond with awe and gratitude, living worthy lives, since they were ransomed with The precious blood of Christ. Is my life marked by a sense of reverence and am I truly grateful for the gift of my faith? The Gospel story about the two disciples on the road to Emmaus is one of the great pieces of writing in Luke s Gospel. It is the crowning story of all the appearance stories of the risen Lord. The precise village of Emmaus has never been definitively identified. There is more than one village claiming the name of Emmaus. Some writers have pointed out that Emmaus maybe a state of mind as well as a place. Emmaus is where you go as you leave the cemetery after burying a parent or a dear friend; after you receive a grim report in the doctor s office; after you lose your job unexpectedly. You go into yourself and your heart is heavy and the future seems clouded. Then a stranger or a friend takes time to talk to you and you come alive again. Hope is born anew and there is a future. It is Christ who comes so often in the guise of the stranger or the friend. In Luke s Emmaus story the two disciples came to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread. This is one of the earliest names for the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First Holy Communion: Today we rejoice with twelve young people of our Parish who will receive Holy Communion for the first time. With their Catechists and their families they have spent many months preparing for this day. We pray that these children, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, will rejoice and be glad as they come to recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Prayer of the Faithful: In the Prayer of the Faithful, the people respond in some sense to the Word of God which they have received in faith and, exercising the office of their baptismal priesthood, offer prayers to God for the salvation of all.
