Today s Readings First Reading Naaman, cleansed from his leprosy, returns to Elisha and pledges his belief in and allegiance to the LORD. 3 Pastor s Message What happens when powerful and successful people come up against mortality and limits? Naaman, in the First Reading (2 Kings 5:14-17) was such a person. As a general in the army of his king, he commanded respect and wielded considerable power. He had everything going for him. Then something happened. Naaman was stricken with leprosy. It could be a fatal disease unless he found a healing. Someone told him about the famous prophet, Elisha who was known to have healing power because he was so close to God. Naaman was encouraged by his king to travel from Syria to Israel to meet Elisha and ask for a healing. Distance was not a problem. Powerful people are not restricted by the limitations of ordinary people. When Naaman arrived in Israel and went to meet Elisha he was told to do a simple thing. He was told to go and bathe seven times in the river Jordan. At first he was insulted and angry by such a simple request. After he got rid of his pride he did as he had been asked and was miraculously healed (Through the intercession of Elisha). Naaman is truly grateful for his healing, confesses his faith in the God of Israel and offers Elisha a gift which the prophet refuses. As Naaman returns home to Syria with his retinue of attendants, he has one final request. He took two mule loads of dirt back to Syria so he could build an altar to God, the God of Israel. In a subtle way the story of Naaman makes the point that Yahweh, the God of Israel is the God of all. The Gospel Reading from Luke s Gospel (Lk 17:11-19) stresses that gratitude is the proper attitude to God s blessings. We are to be always grateful for life s blessings. Luke is also reminding us of the universality of God s saving concerns. All are to receive the messianic blessings of healing and wholeness, even the Samaritans who were often despised and hated. The Samaritan was not only healed physically: he was also saved. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stewardship Sunday: This weekend at all the Masses we will be making a commitment to be good stewards of God s gifts by pledging to share our time and talent with our Church through our varied ministries educational, liturgical, out-reach and social concerns. If you are already serving in one of these ministries we ask you to recommit for another year. If you are new to our Church or were not in a position in the past to commit to a Church ministry, we encourage you by all means to sign up now and share your time and talents. The Parish cannot be like a filling station where we come to fill-up every week: it must be a vibrant community of faithful parishioners where all are willing to share and serve so as to build up the Church. What are some of the ways that we could comfort the sorrowful in our midst? Helping a widow or widower to learn skills that they now need. A widow might need to learn more about household finances (especially if her husband always took care of that area), or she might need to learn some basic mechanical skills. A widower might need to learn how to cook, or do the laundry, or to properly clean a kitchen. We could work on fulfilling the Honey Do list for a new widow what an act of charity, to finish out those projects that her husband was never able to finish! Listening to someone who is hurting from abuse (often, we don t need to talk at all, but only to listen), and helping them to find a good counselor or therapist. Helping a woman or man who is hurting from abortion to find help or who just needs a person to listen and pray. Sharing with a person who is sorrowful over the past about the Love and Mercy that is available to them in the Sacrament of Confession.
