Today s Readings First Reading The apostles perform many signs and wonders among the people. Many are added to their numbers. 3 Pastor s Message Easter is not just a day. It is a Liturgical season of fifty days that will bring us to the Feast of Pentecost on May 15th. The truth of Easter and its implications for the world is so great it requires repeated reflection. This is what the Church will do in the coming weeks. The second Sunday of Easter has been given different names. It was called Low Sunday in the old calendar; it is not clear why this name was given. Another tradition referred to this Sunday as White Sunday since it was the end of the week during which the newly baptized wore white robes. In recent years, due to the direction of St. John Paul II, this Sunday is known as Divine Mercy Sunday. This is especially significant this year as we celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Many churches, including Our Lady of the Lake will have a special afternoon service including the recitation of the Rosary and the Chaplet prayers for Divine Mercy at 3:00 p.m. One of the fruits of Easter is a great outpouring of Divine Mercy in the hearts of believers. The Gospel selection for this Sunday is repeated annually. It is from John s Gospel (20:19-31). It presents two appearances of the risen Christ to the disciples on the first evening of Easter and again eight days later. This Gospel is written for everyone who has ever doubted the truth of Easter. Thomas who was in deepest doubt at first and who stands in for all of us, came to deepest faith with the grace of the risen Lord. Christ was patient with him and waited for his act of faith. In the end Thomas pronounces the strongest expression of faith in all of John s Gospel: My Lord and my God. We can all relate to Thomas. He is a symbol for our time when faith does not come so easily to many. We can take comfort too in the closing words of today s Gospel addressed to us: Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Word of Sincere Thanks: To all our Liturgical ministers, choir members, lectors, special ministers of Holy Communion, ushers, Altar servers, cantors and song leaders who made Holy Week so special in our Parish. Thanks too to our sacristans and church decorators and to all that lent a helping hand. A Grief Observed: The Catholic community has lost some giants of the faith in recent days. We grieve for the passing of Bishop William Houck, retired Bishop of Jackson; Mother Angelica, foundress of three religious communities and a world-wide religious broadcasting station now seen in 140 countries; Ron Stasko of our parish faithful believer, devoted husband and father, member of our choir and the Knights of Columbus. An Easter witness to be sure. May they all share the fullness of Resurrection life.
