3 Pastor s Message It is said of Bartimaeus in today s Gospel reading from Mark that He threw aside his cloak, jumped up and came to Jesus. This is an exuberant Gospel so luminous and illuminating. Bartimaeus emerges as a forthright and attractive character. He is presented as a model of faith in Jesus. The irony is that the disciples in Mark s Gospel heard all, yet heard nothing; they saw all (in the company of Jesus) and yet they were blind. It is Bartimaeus, the blind man, who really sees and becomes a disciple as he follows Jesus on the way. It was Bartimaeus too who proclaimed Jesus as Messiah and Son of David. And didn t they know that when the Messiah came he would open the eyes of the blind? Bartimaeus seized the graceful moment when he encountered Jesus and was asked what he wanted him to do for him. Without hesitation he answered: Master, I want to see. Immediately he received his sight. We are all like Bartimaeus on the road of life. We move from darkness to light; from blindness to sight; from fascination to faith. Discipleship is a way of seeing. Lord, that I may see must be our constant prayer. That I may see when sorrow comes, when age presses in, when life is uncertain, when I can t make sense of life. That I may see when I m confused and I can t stand one more campaign ad on television. The reading from Jeremiah (31:7-9) has Israel coming home from exile out of bondage to take up it s vocation again, amid shouts of gladness and tears of joy. Now they see with fresh eyes. They departed in tears; some were blindfolded according to Babylonian tradition. But now there is the joy of homecoming. Teilhard De Chardin, priest and scientist said: Seeing is everything. Lord, that I might see. Annie Dillard, the novelist and creator of Lovely Words wrote: I see something, or something sees me and some enormous power brushes me with its clean wing and I resound like a beaten bell. Yes, we come to see that God is gracious and real and forgiving and sustaining us and that we have nothing to fear. We have those moments of insight. Numinous and epiphany like. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pope Francis in a Homily in Washington, D.C.: Harsh and divisive language does not befit us. Dialogue is our method out of fidelity to the God who never wearies of visiting the marketplace, even at the eleventh hour, to propose His offer of love. How lovely these words!
