Psalm 33 Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. 2 Timothy 1:8-10 God has saved us and calls us to a holy life. Matthew 17:1-9 The transfigured glory of Jesus reveals that life and immortality will rob death of its power. Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. - Mt 17:1-3 Fuel Maintenance: $ SCRIPTURAL ROSARY Join us each Wednesday at 8AM to pray the Most Holy Rosary. This week we will pray the Joyful Mysteries for Protection & Dignity of all Human Life. 2nd Sunday of Lent This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. When they heard this divine declaration, Peter, James, and John fell on the ground, trembling in fear. The gleaming vision of Jesus miraculously transfigured before them, and the appearance of the two prophets who had been dead for ages, didn t knock them over. Rather, the clear voice of God that followed this apparition struck fear into their hearts. The first part of the heavenly announcement certainly confirmed what they had just seen-the unveiled glory of Jesus divinity. But these words included another element, a command from on high: Listen to him. Perhaps part of the fear that shook these men was the solemn realization that Christ s divinity demands more than our respect. It demands our response. Knowing that Jesus is God is only part one. We are also called to follow him, by heeding his teachings and imitating his example. Lent is a special time to examine just how well we are listening to Christ. It is a season to uncover the areas where we are deaf to his word, or at least where we are pretending not to hear it. To this end, we have the Lenten exercises of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. First and foremost, in prayer we literally pause to listen. We do our best to quiet ourselves and ask God to speak to us in the depths of our hearts. By fasting, we learn to silence the demands of those physical cravings that too often take first priority in our lives. And through the practice of giving alms, we train ourselves to hear the voice of the least of these, in whom Christ himself is present. This Lent, may we respond wholeheartedly to God s command to listen to his Son. Sponsor of the Week Kartabar Restaurant & Lounge
4 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT March 16, 2014 Dear Parishioners, Last Saturday, I joined 60 other people in the Cathedral Hall at St. Peter & Paul's Cathedral in Providence for an event called the "March for the Surviving Youth". Over half of the people present were youth. We began with an opening prayer, before then processing with a big Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the Planned Parenthood in Providence. A young girl played a drum as we marched, the beats representing very powerfully the heartbeats of the unborn children in the womb. Once we reached Planned Parenthood, I led the group in praying the Rosary, interceding for all the pregnant mothers, the fathers, the unborn babies, the workers in the abortion place (especially the abortionist), and really for everyone who went into the Planned Parenthood building, whether it was for the murder of their children through abortion or to get a contraceptive device that would then either be used as an abortificient or prevent new life from being conceived. Many people are deceived about what Planned Parenthood really does. For example, in the 2012 Presidential election, Obama falsely claimed that PP does Mammograms. They do not. Rather, they do abortions, with more than 50% of those abortions being done on teenagers and college-aged women. Interestingly, the Susan B. Komen Foundation still receives funding from Planned Parenthood. Please remember this fact when trying to figure out which breast cancer foundation to donate to. Unfortunately, Planned Parenthood also receives over a million dollars of OUR taxpaying money through the government. The current occupier of the White House is so connected to Planned Parenthood, that he even gave a speech wishing God's blessing upon them. I tell you all of this so that you increase your prayers for the sanctity of life in the womb, especially during this Lenten time. Our country continues to eliminate its youngest members from our ranks. We need to pray and fast for the mothers and fathers to choose life for their children. There is so much support out there so that they may make the right decision for life. We need to also pray and fast for the conversion of heart for all those who work in, or support in anyway, Planned Parenthood and the other death camps out there. We must also pray and fast for all the mothers and fathers that have had abortions, that they come to know and experience the healing mercy and forgiveness of Jesus in the Sacrament of Confession. Finally, we also need to put our prayers and fasting into action for the unborn and their parents. On Ash Wednesday, we began in our diocese another "40 Days for Life" campaign. During this time, we can dedicate at least one hour a week praying for these intentions, either in front of an abortion place (I usually go to the Women's Medical Center on Broad St. in Cranston each Saturday after the 8am Mass), or in front of Jesus in the Tabernacle of the Church. My brothers and sisters, let us not be afraid to be a voice for the voiceless. God bless! Fr.
