All are encouraged to receive from the chalice or with bread alone, and to refrain from intinction (dipping the wafer in the chalice). 3 AUTUMN NEWS OCTOBER 7, 2012 THANKSGIVING SUNDAY Speakers Lunch Group "In Search of William Halton The next meeting of the St. Luke s Speakers Lunch Group is at 11.30am on Thursday October 11 in the Parish Hall. The speaker is author John MacDonald who with his PowerPoint presentation will be speaking about the life and times of the man behind the region's name. Everyone is invited to this Bring Your Own Lunch event Please call Bill at or keithanita@sympatico.ca if you intend to attend. PWRDF CHRISTMAS CARDS have been ordered and will be for sale at coffee hour, beginning next Sunday. CHURCH CALENDARS for 2013 Will be for sale at coffee hour or at the office during regular office hours. Cost is $5.00 Lost and Found - The Adult Library is missing two books titled "The Radical Disciple" and "The Year of Living Biblically" by A. G. Jacob. Please check your shelves and desks at home. 4 CHRISTMAS MARKET UPDATE * Saturday, November 24th * CHRISTMAS MARKET COUNTDOWN 7 WEEKS! Please mark your calendars now for our planning meeting on Monday, October 15th at 7:30pm in the basement of the church if you are in charge of a table or area or wish to help out. Parlour Treasures Thank you for sharing your valued treasures of crystal, china, linens, silver, jewellery, etc. They are all needed to attract our many buyers who rank us #1. Sunday Nov. 11 is the drop off day in the Parlour immediately after the 10 am service. If you are not able to bring your items then, please call Elaina Wittig at to make alternate arrangements. Thank you for putting aside some of your summer produce for our deli table so we can sell your delicious jams, pickles, and preserves. We need your knitted items for children & adults including sweaters, mittens, scarves & hats. Hand sewn items & crafts are also needed. Our Children s Table (ages 4 to 8) needs donations of reasonably priced small trinket such as small toys, small books, etc. Our dry soup makers need glass quart Mason jars & Christmas fabric pieces. Contact Heather White at Think about manning a table during coffee hour to sell raffle tickets or take some with you to sell to your neighbours, co-workers, friends. Help will also be needed the week before & day of the market so if you can help please contact the Market Coordinators. Sign up sheet in hall during coffee hour. 5 PLEASE NOTE: RE PARKING IN FRONT OF PARISH HALL there has been a change.. The signs now read: Vehicle loading zone 20 minute limit, 6am to 6pm, Sundays & Holidays exempt. This means there is still a 20 minute limit Monday to Saturday 6am to 6pm. You may park there after 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and any time on Sundays & Holidays - keeping in mind that there is a 3 hour limit for street parking in Burlington. This is not a St. Luke s spot so anyone may park there. On Sundays, please leave these spots for those who have difficulty walking and need to park closer to the church. Thank you for your consideration. St. Luke s is off to El Hogar again! We are organizing our next service trip to El Hogar in Honduras. Our information meeting will take place on Thursday, October 11 th at 7:30 pm in the Board Room. We will discuss El Hogar s mission and goals, team members obligations and expectations both financial & personal, as well as the work involved as we prepare for the trip and while we are in Honduras. We will also talk about the rewards of service there and how this can be a life-changing experience. Please bring any questions you may have about this wonderful project. 7 OCTOBER 7, 2012 THANKSGIVING SUNDAY BOOK SALE There s nothing like a good book to read so stock up for the fall & winter or think about buying one as a gift. Mark your calendars for Saturday October 27 th as we are having our first Book Sale. Come have a coffee, browse the selection & enjoy. If you have books that you would like to donate, please contact Paulette Finch at (PLEASE, do not bring them to the office there is no place to store them. Thank you ) NEWS FROM MARY SHERWOOD Mary Sherwood writes that the children are all enjoying their summer by playing sports, relaxing and relishing the lack of homework and exams! September would have found them preparing for school registration in October. Mary asks how we would like to be responsible for the back to school needs of thirty nine children! Mary as always thanks us for our efforts and asks that we keep the children in our prayers. Loonie Toonie Sunday St. Luke s parishioners raised $1, for our First Nations student, Kirk Beaver, who is enrolled at the University of Toronto. The amount is three times last year s donations! Congratulations on another successful Loonie Toonie Sunday. PHOENIX FELLOWSHIP DROP IN CENTRE meets Wednesday morning, after the 10am service. 8 The Great Fall Hymn Sing Music at St. Luke's presents the Great Fall Hymn Sing in the church on Sunday November 4th at 3.00pm. This year's hymn sing features the choirs of West Plains & Wellington Square United Churches plus St. Matthew's and St. Luke's Anglican Churches. The title of this year's hymn sing is "Royal Hymns & Anthems" featuring music performed at various royal functions. Tickets for the event can be pre ordered by at or by phone at Ticket prices are $8.00 Seniors & Students, $10.00 for general admission. Children ages 12 & under have free admission. SATELLITE FOOD BANK To serve the community better, St. Christopher s Church and Partnership West Food Bank are teaming up to establish a satellite food bank on Guelph Line. Initially the food bank will be open on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings (when the OPEN DOORS clothing store is open). To learn more about the project and to lend your support, please come to a public meeting on Thursday October 11, 7:30pm at St. Christopher s Church, 662 Guelph Line. If you would be interested in volunteering at the food bank for one four hour shift per month, please call St. Christopher s at PARISH DIRECTORIES If you had your picture taken, you are entitled to a free directory. They will be available for pick-up this morning at coffee hour. If you did not have your picture taken and would like to purchase a directory, they will be available at a cost of $15.00 each.
