Film: Trick or Treaty On Tuesday, October 25 at 7 :30 pm join us in watching the National Film Board film "Trick or Treaty" which was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival in This film is being shown in the lead up to Treaties Recognition Week, the first week of November. 2 The Week In Review This week s sermon was based on excerpts from the book of 1 Samuel, chapters 1 & 2. The first theme that Pastor Loretta spoke on was that God calls each one of us into ministry. The second theme was that of singing songs of praise (as Hannah did when she found out that she was finally had a baby). She shared the importance that learning hymns has had in her own life, spoke of the healing that can come to all of us through singing, and encouraged us to sing our thanksgiving and praise. Refugee Concert & Silent Auction We expect that everyone at Grace has some way that they can be involved in the Refugee Concert & Silent Auction, and we want to be able to get the word out to everyone about what ways you can be involved and why you will want to be involved. So, we are planning a special Refugee Concert & Silent Auction edition of the newsletter. There will be information about the refugee family and how it comes about that they are coming to Hamilton, and details about the concert & silent auction event. Look for this to arrive in your mailbox in a couple of weeks. Treaties Recognition Week With the passing of the Treaties Recognition Week Act on May 30 this year, Ontario has designated the first full week of November as Treaties Recognition Week (November 7-13). The Province is seeking to highlight the importance of treaties and to raise awareness of the treaty relationships which exist between indigenous and non-indigenous people in Ontario. In observance of the inaugural week, a joint Anglican/ Lutheran working group is hosting a Blanket Exercise on Wednesday November 9 at 7pm at St. Mark s Anglican Church Brantford and an afternoon of presentations, discussion and worship on Sunday November 13 beginning at 2pm at the Woodland Cultural Centre Brantford and concluding at Her Majesty s Royal Chapel of the Mohawk. There is no charge for any of the activities; donations are always welcome! Spaces are limited. Please register with Anne or Kathy at office@stmarks.on.ca or You can start thinking now about whether you are interested in going; the poster with details is on Pg. 6. Thanksgiving Flower Fund To all who donated to the fund... your donations were sufficient to pay for flowers at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thank you for your generous giving! Aid to Haiti CLWR issues emergency appeals to respond to disasters. Their membership with ACT Alliance makes it possible for Canadians to support relief efforts through CLWR for almost any large-scale emergency in the world. Partners in disaster areas provide information updates and implement response measures with the funds and resources provided by ACT Alliance members. If you care about the damage done in Haiti by Hurricane Matthew, and you want to help, you can do so through CLWR. The easiest way to do this is to put your donation in an envelope here at Grace (use a pew envelope - mark it Haiti.) You will get a tax receipt from Grace Church. Or, you can go to clwr.org to make a secure on-line donation, mail them a cheque ( Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0W5), or give them your credit card info over the phone ( ). For any of those ways of giving, you will receive a tax receipt from CLWR.

3 More on More Ways to Give The work and ministry of Grace Church relies on the continual generosity of parishioners and visitors. While it might seem old fashioned to put cash or a cheque in an envelope and put it in the offering plate on Sunday mornings, we still appreciate this method of giving. You can also give using PAR (Pre-authorized Remittance) so that your offerings come out of your bank account automatically on the 20th of each month. We have been using this method successfully for almost 10 years. In the spring of 2016 we created a brand new website and after consultation with other congregations, created a Canada Helps account. Now you can give on-line whether you are at home, on vacation or even sitting in the pew on Sunday morning! Regardless of how you give, know that your givings ensure that our ministry and outreach continue. All giving qualifies for an income tax receipt. 4 MacNeill Baptist Church Sunday, October 23 rd this year is the eighty seventh anniversary of Westdale/MacNeill Baptist Church, and we are happy to announce that our preacher for that date is a person with strong ties to the Westdale community. The Hon. Rev. Dr. Lois M. Wilson will be that speaker. Dr. Wilson, in partnership with her husband, Roy, was minister at First United Church, Hamilton, and has also served a number of congregations in Canada. She has also served as the President of the World Council of Churches, on the Board of Amnesty International, and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. She has traveled extensively throughout the world meeting with Church leaders and their congregants in a number of countries where the prophetic voice of our faith was being forced into silence. Dr. Wilson has also served as a Senator in Canada s house of sober second thought. She is the author of seven books, including her memoir, Turning the World Upside Down[1989], and most recently her delightful collection of anecdotes of the Christians she has throughout her life s journey, entitled I Want to be in That umber: Cool Saints I have Known [2014]. Incidentally, she is one of the coolest! Following the service a simple lunch will be served.
