1 St. Germain Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club Celebrating Snowmobiling Since 1969! Volume Number 5 December 2016 President s Message Ozzie Ausloos By the time this is published the first two holidays of the season (Deer Hunting & Thanksgiving) will be over. I hope your holidays were, safe and loving, with your families. Both of these holidays are family orientated especially in Wisconsin. Most hunting camps in Wisconsin are family orientated and we all know that is what Thanksgiving is about, being with family. Where am I going with this you ask? Well as you know the last two seasons the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club has picked up hundreds of new members. As a member of the Bo-Boen s you become a member of the AWSC the Wisconsin Association of Snowmobile Clubs and with that you receive the Wisconsin Snowmobile News magazine. In this last magazine the editor Lindsey Fontaine and AWSC Vice President Lori Heiden both wrote a piece regarding the value of belonging to a club. At the last membership meeting we had several members that came to the meeting for the first time. They discovered that the members that come to our meetings are like family. We don t necessarily have turkey for our meal but you don t go away hungry just like Thanksgiving and, you get that warm feeling that you just spent some time with great people with similar interests. We have weekly rides with the Apple Dumpling Gang and the Boo-BBB s that new people are more than welcome to participate in. We also have several events coming up that you can join in to help raise funds, all of these events are run with our family of members. A long story short, we want to meet you and your family at some of these events. Joining a club is more than just paying dues, if you give more of yourself by attending some of these events you will receive a whole lot more in return. Pray for cold & snow and may you and your family have a Merry Christmas. Ozzie Seasons Eatings It s that time of year again. A time to open our hearts to those less fortunate than us. Once again, at our annual Christmas party at Whitetail Inn, we will be collecting non-perishable food and personal care items for the Vilas Food Pantry. Items that are needed most are cereals, granola bars, canned meat, boxed dinners, peanut butter and toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. Of course, money is always appreciated. The food pantry works with local grocers to get vouchers for meat and fresh fruit and vegetables. Thank you in advance for your generosity! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from your Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club Officers & Board of Directors Club Officers & Directors President Bob Ozzie Ausloos Work: (920) lakelandausloos@gmail.com President-Elect Tom Nampel Home: (715) nampel@newnorth.net Secretary Kay Schultz Home: (715) gks.found@gmail.com Treasurer Ed Siergiej Cell: (715) ed@siergiej.us Trail Boss Jim Wendt Cell: (715) starman@newnorth.net Director Dianne Dieter Home: (715) dianeswede@yahoo.com Director Don Bauman Cell: (715) donmariestgermain@yahoo.com Director Roger Klein Home: (715) rwklein1@gmail.com Director Gary Groff Home: (715) gary.h.groff@gmail.com Director Paul Bohnen Work: (715) paulsrentall@verizon.net Director Dave Walker Work: (715) dave@arrowheadgroomers.com Past-President Tom Christensen Work: (715) stgsport@frontier.com
2 Trail Boss Jim Wendt As we eagerly await the arrival of colder temps I can't help but feel a bit disappointed at the slow pace toward winter. As of this writing, the lakes are hovering around 50 degrees which means there is a long way to go before we make ice! The trail system is ready and I have no landowner issues to report. I hope you all have your trail passes in hand ready to ride. We will have a groomer in the St. Germain Holiday parade after Thanksgiving so look for us and wave your support for the best club in the state! Hope to have a better report next month. HAPPY TRAILS, Jim This little Brown Sign Could Save Your Life! Vilas and Oneida County Snowmobile Clubs have placed brown, 3 digit number signs throughout the County at key intersections. In the event of an emergency, the 911 operator will ask for this number. Their emergency response system can identify these numbers and give important information to rescue personnel. So pay attention to these intersection number signs. They can save lives! Pictured here are members Steve Soltwedel, Ozzie Ausloos, Paul Bohnen and Jim Wendt. Our Sign Guys, Steve Soltwedel and Ozzie Ausloos. Over the years the weather took it s toll on our informational signs. Steve Soltwedel took an inventory of our signs and began a replacement program with all new signs. The new signs are made of all metal with reflective face lettering. This was quite an undertaking for Steve to get all of the lettering accurate. Thanks Steve for a job well done. New signs, new look! Be sure the lake is marked before you ride across it!!! New Informational Kiosk Pictured are a few of our members erecting a new informational kiosk. This sign is located at Intersection 914 just off the highline coming into St Germain. The map on this sign is the back side of our trail map and the wording is asking everyone to please patronize our local businesses. Over the course of the year our map advertisers step up to help our club with buying an ad and giving door prizes etc. The Bo Boen board of directors do appreciate this generosity and want to do our part to help these business owners by promoting their business. This sign was donated by BP Cabinetry of Eagle River, Bernie & Judy Pacanowski. Bernie paid for the material and did the construction as well. Paul s Rent-All donated a powered posthole digger which saved a lot of labor. Thank you Bernie and Paul, please look for this sign this coming season.

Students can obtain a DNR Customer ID# from St. Germain Sport Marine during business hours or by calling between 7 am to 10 pm. You can also visit a Wisconsin DNR Service Center during their regular scheduled hours. For additional DNR Service Center hours and locations go to and click on the Contact US tab located at the top. Fellow board member, Dianne Dieter and I need your help. We are looking for any Bo-Boen memorabilia that you may have stuffed away somewhere in a drawer or box. This includes pictures, maps, newspaper articles, posters, or any other club related stuff. In our spare time (what is that?), we are going to try to put together a club scrapbook. It s been almost 50 years since the Bo-Boen s officially became a club. We have found a couple of old maps amazing how things have progressed since Along with that, we have a picture of the founding members many of whom still live in St. Germain. So if you can help us in any way, please call me at or Dianne at Apple Dumpling Gang The Apple Dumpling Gang had it s 35th Annual Kick- Off Dinner November 5th, at Golden Pines Restaurant. We had 52 people there enjoying a great time and a great meal. We are planning our first ride on Wednesday, December 14th snow permitting. 6 Membership Corner Jeff & Beth Urbans Cell: Membership Website: CLUB Membership WI Trail Pass/Reg. Link: WI DNR TRAIL PASS INFO December is almost here and the snow is expected to start falling and the temperature continue to drop here in St. Germain. I am sure you are all getting those sleds ready for the upcoming season and are excited to hit the trails, please remember these few tips when you take that first ride! Safety Tips More than 200,000 registered snowmobiles hit Wisconsin s 25,000 miles of groomed trails each winter. Zero alcohol keeps you safe on the trail. Display the sticker on your helmet, snowmobile, trailer or vehicle. Slow down. Speed is a contributing factor in nearly all fatal snowmobiling accidents. Drive at moderate speeds, and drive defensively, especially after sunset. Carry a first aide kit and dress appropriately, your first aid kit should include a flashlight, knife, compass, map and waterproof matches. Always wear a helmet with goggles or a face shield to prevent injuries from twigs and flying debris. Wear layers of water repellent clothing and make sure you have no loose ends that might catch in the machine or tangle in equipment. Avoid traveling across bodies of water when uncertain of ice thickness or water currents. Rapidly changing weather and moving water in streams and lake inlets also affect the thickness and strength of ice on lakes and ponds. Snow cover can act as a blanket and prevents thick ice from forming. Stay on marked trails or where allowed, on the right shoulder of the road. Be alert for fences, tree stumps and stretched wire that may be concealed by snow. Never travel alone. Most snowmobile accidents result in personal injury. The most dangerous situations occur when a person is injured and alone. If you must travel alone, tell someone your destination, planned route and when you will return. MOST IMPORTANTLY: STAY SAFE AND PLAY NICE!!! Bo-Boen Memberships New Current Non-Renewed Total Donations $10,310 Welcome our new members Mike Diest Maple Park, IL Tyler Reynolds Tolono, IL Tim Baudino Marseilles, IL Jim & Amy Verseman Linn Creek, MO Michael & Ellen Horne Germantown, WI Dean Koch Grafton, WI John & Angela DeVault Bloomington, IL Thomas & Stacey Hensen St. Germain, WI David & Patricia Both Marseilles, IL Chris & Kim Droes St. Germain, WI Brad & Jenny Zwicker Port Washington, WI Brian & Dana Bent Eden Prairie, MN John & Coral Kaczynski New Berlin, WI Matt & Jeni Hopp Johnsburg, IL Gerald & Sharon Morris Naperville, IL Russell & Tracy Sage McHenry, IL Cory & Megan Schmidt Pecatonica, IL How to meet new people Meeting people can be hard to do for some people. It is a multiple step process, and step 1 is to join a group or organization. If you are reading this newsletter you have already completed step 1 by joining the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club. What a great choice you made, we have a great bunch of members coming from all walks of life with one common thread snowmobiling. We all can t agree on the brand of snowmobile to ride but that adds to the fun. The 2 nd step in meeting people is to get involved. Coming to meetings is a good way to get involved but another and more important way is to volunteer at some of our fundraisers. We just happen to have 2 fund raisers coming up and we are looking for volunteers. On February 3rd & 4th we will be manning the Food Tent at the Radar Run and we will also handle parking and crowd control. We will be needing upwards of 20 people each day. The shifts are normally 3-4 hours and what a great way to meet people. If you re interested please contact: Food Tent Parking Steve Soltwedel Ozzie Ausloos Diane Dieter Don Baumann We are also serving food at the Groomer Show on February 1st & 2nd. If you are interested please contact Jim Wendt As a side note the food service is heated at the Radar Run and inside at the Groomer Show. The 3 rd step in meeting people is to take a leadership role in the organization you re a member of. We are always looking for people to bring new ideas and skills to our club. Kindly call any of our board of directors if you are interested in taking on a leadership role.
