275 Riverglen Dr. S.E., Calgary, AB, T2C 3T5 Telephone: (403) F a x : (403) DECEMBER NEWSLETTER Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10-12 The Advent season begins on December 3 and as we enter into Advent, we can be encouraged to slow down. We can all breathe more deeply. We can all begin to trust that this will be a blessed time. Then, when we let ourselves be who we are, and hear the Scriptures, we can begin to quietly pray, Come, Lord, Jesus. We might expand that prayer, in quiet moments of our days ahead, Come into my life. I trust you don t mind if it is still messy. I believe you love me, because I need your love. I don t fear you can t find the way to my heart. Come and fill me with peace and the love only you can give. Some of us will want to open our hands on our laps or hold up our arms in the privacy of our rooms and say out loud, Come, Lord, Jesus, come into this house, into my family, into our struggles. Come and heal us, and give us joy again. Come and unite us and let us experience, each in our own way, a bit of the joy you are offering me now. May God bless you and your families through the season of Advent. Mark Macgillivray Principal Lisa O Donnell Assistant Principal
ADVENT SEASON IDEAS Personal & Communal Practices: Create a prayer space with an Advent wreath and arrange symbols of those people or needs you wish to remember in prayer each day. Use photos, words, and symbols that will remind you and focus your prayer. Give someone in your life the gift of your forgiveness this Advent season. Light a candle in the darkness and make time and space for silence and contemplation either at the start of your day or at the end of your day. Fast from overexposure to sources of influence like media, television, and the internet that barrage you with ads and tempt you to lose focus on the true reason for the season. Unplug those messages that insist that Christmas is all about consumption, spending, and over indulging. Simplify. Focus. Send a note of gratitude to someone who has made a difference in your life but may not be aware of it. Use your gift-giving efforts to support just causes and better the lives of others, sending a dual message of love and justice to the recipient. Consider donating to local or global Catholic agencies that minister to the poor. Give the gift of nutrition or tuition to a child in need. Look for gifts that will keep on giving long after the holiday season ends. CRAFT RAFFLE Craft Raffle Starts Soon! Thank you for all your generous donations - our display and windows are full! Ticket sales start on Thursday evening during interviews and are available until Dec 15th. Tickets are 25 cents each or 5 for $1. CHRISTMAS CONCERT The Christmas concert will take place on Thursday, December 7 th. There will be two performances. The afternoon performance will begin at 1:10 p. m. and the evening performance will begin at 7:00 p. m. Due to limited seating, parents are encouraged to attend only one of the performances. For both shows, the children are asked to wear their concert cloths, which means no jeans, please. For the evening performance, the students are required to be at the school by 6:40.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES Thank you to all parents who took time to attend the Parent-Teacher Conferences. We hope that you had meaningful conversations that will help with your children s success. A huge thank to the parents who provided the bountiful feast for the teachers that night. Your generosity is very much appreciated. FOOD BANK COLLECTION Give What You Can - Food Bank We will be collecting food bank items, Thursday, November 30 th. The TOP 10 needed items include: Canned Meat Canned Fish Pasta Pasta Sauce Stew Chunky Soup Peanut Butter Rice Cereal Grocery Certificates or Bus Passes Upcoming Collection Dates: Thursday, Dec.7 th afternoon and evening concerts There will be an area set up in the school for items to be dropped off any day between November 30 th and December 8 th as well. Thank you for your generous support at this time and throughout the year! CHRISTMAS ANGELS Christmas is a time of giving. Holy Angels will again become Christmas Angels, spreading joy to the less fortunate in our community through the St. Vincent de Paul Society, as we have done for many years. This year we are helping to fulfill the needs of the Tree Doves at St. Bernadette. Generally, the older children s doves are chosen last. We are asking for donations of Gift Cards for teenage children or cash donations that we will use to purchase Gift Cards. Suggestions for Gift Cards could be for the Mall, Walmart, Movies, Superstore, Best Buy, Future Shop, etc. We will gratefully accept any and all amounts of Gift Cards. Generally each teen is given a card for $25, but we can combine the cards with smaller amounts or supplement with cards we purchase using the cash that has been donated. Gift Cards and monetary donations are due by Friday, December 8 th. Thank you for your participation and generosity
COUNCIL UPDATE Hello Everyone! It looks like the Christmas season is sneaking up on us in a hurry and this will be a busy month! Thank you to the teachers for putting on the fabulous Craft Raffle. Have fun getting your tickets and deciding which items to put in for! Also, a reminder to bring in any Boston Pizza receipts as our school gets a donation from each full-price meal. I would also like to give a big thank you to everyone that has or is planning to volunteer with any of our fundraising initiatives this year. Have a wonderful and safe Christmas Holiday and we look forward to seeing your smiling faces in January. Daryll Anderson Chair, Holy Angels Council BOSTON PIZZA FUNDRAISER Holy Angels School continues to participate in the Tomanik Restaurant Group (which owns 9 Boston Pizza locations) fundraising program. HOW IT WORKS: Staff and parents/students of Holy Angels School can dine at any of their 9 Boston Pizza locations. If you keep your receipts and hand them into the school, Boston Pizza will cut a cheque to Holy Angels School for 10% of the REGULAR priced items. Just the receipt portion that describes what was ordered (not your payment receipt). WHERE YOU CAN DINE: BP in Riverbend, Chinook Mall, Fairview (Deerfoot Mdws. near Costco), Southport Rd (just off Macleod Tr.); 130th Ave SE (just off Deerfoot Trail), Dalhousie (NW), Okotoks, Banff, Chestermere. QUESTIONS: If you have any questions, please contact the school at for assistance. SCHOOL PATROL NEWS Please remember to practice safety over convenience! Are you parking too close? Our patrollers are on duty to keep your children safe when crossing the roads. Please do not drop your children off or pull into the pylon zone. It makes it difficult for patrollers and pedestrians to see around you. Always park at least 5 meters from the crosswalk. Help keep our children safe by obeying all traffic rules surrounding the crosswalk and school zone! Our patrollers continue to do an excellent job.
LOST AND FOUND BOX Our Lost and Found table, located by the gym, has a number of articles of clothing belonging to students in our school. Please pick up a Visitor Tag at the office to find any of the items that your child may have left behind. It is a child and parent s responsibility to claim items that are turned in to our lost and found. Any item that has the name of the child clearly and prominently marked will be given back to its owner. The remaining items are periodically cleaned and will be donated to charity at 3:00 pm on Thursday, December 21 st. HELP KEEP OUR SCHOOL CLEAN! Our caretakers, Mr. Phong and Mr. Nio, do a wonderful job of keeping our school clean. Please help them out by removing your boots/shoes at the front door during poor weather. All students should have a pair of indoor shoes at this point of the year. Thank you for your consideration. BE PROACTIVE FOR THE WEATHER With winter upon us, the weather will be getting colder and more unpredictable. Please ensure that your child is wearing winter jackets, mitts, hats, scarves and boots on those cold weather days. As per district protocol, students will be going outside for recess on days when the temperature is warmer than -20 C. We will use our discretion and always put our children s safety first. Please take the time to mark your child s name on all their outdoor clothing items including mittens and hats. It helps us to return the items to your child when they are placed in the lost and found. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to all of the kind and caring donations we have received for our Christmas Raffle and Food Bank. We would also like to thank our school council for planning our special lunches, organizing and working through fundraisers and for helping out around the school wherever needed. Thank you to the parents who have come out and helped us in the classroom or on field trips as well. We truly appreciate all the time and effort you put in to giving our students new opportunities and in helping to make our school a better place!
