The momentum and pace so far is just exhilarating. Therefore we will have to stay focused and diligent so that we can make it last. Here are just a few things that I am super excited about. Our first meeting in September with J. Keith White was awesome. Watching a floral artist master like Keith was a special treat. He showed us how to use cuttings from our yards to make magnificent floral arrangements. Who would have thought we could create something so beautiful and unique with cuttings from your very own garden? We already have a total of 54 members with 8 of them being brand new members. Organic growth is extremely important to an organization. It allows us to reach more people as well as bring in new ideas. We do have a stretch membership goal of obtaining 100 total members by May This will allow us to reach our financial goals so we can make our club last. We are more than halfway there, so please continue to invite your friends, relatives and acquaintances to join the fun and excitement of SAFD. Also, if you are on social media, every Tuesday is SAFD Tuesday where we are asking all members to post something about our club to peek the interest of others and invite them to come see what we are all about. Our annual Tabletop Gala will be March 30, 2017 at Shirley Acres. We have already started to plan this event and would love for you to volunteer to work on one of our committees. Our gala is SAFD s largest fundraiser. The theme for this year is Let the magic began We are working really hard to make this gala not only fun, creative and exciting but magical as well. If you are interested in signing up to be a table designer, there will be a sign up sheet at our October meeting. Lastly, our presenter for our October meeting will be Linda Gay, a horticulturist who has enthusiastically built the plant collection at the 325 acre Mercer Arboretum. She will be sharing her knowledge of bot- any that will take our floral artistry to the next level. Sneak Peak she will tell us which breeds of roses last the longest as well as how to extend the life of your floral arrangements But that is not all. You will have to come to the meeting to hear all of the other things that she will be shar- ing with us. So as you can see, we have a lot of exciting things in the works. If we continue at the pace we are going, SAFD will soon be a household name in the Houston and surrounding areas. We want to be known, not only in the floral community but in every community. If we are able to accomplish this goal, not only will we be able to make it last, but we will take it even a step further and share the love of floral artistry with the masses. 2 P a g e 2 S A F D F l o w e r P r e s s O c t ober 2016 Barbara Bush Library 40th Anniversary Kimberlyn, Eileen and I had a delightful time designing three pieces to help the Barbara Bush library celebrate their 40th anniversary on September 18th. The theme was Freedom to Read. We used red roses which Eileen and Kimberlyn reflexed to make them spectacular, dark blue delphiniums, and white spider mums to create the arrangements. Be sure to check out the beautiful photos in this newsletter.

3 O c t ober 2016 S A F D F l o w e r P r e s s P a g e 3 Community Affairs upcoming workshops Mark your calendar's we will be creating beautiful arrangements to give away on the following dates this year. On Thursday, October 27 from 10AM to noon we will be at Christ the good Shepherd Catholic community making pumpkin inspired arrangements for Freedom Place. Freedom place is a ranch for girls who have been rescued from sex trafficking. The ranch is located in Spring and currently houses 17 girls. Come join me to help make some fresh floral arrangements to brighten their rooms. We will be in the Christmas mood on Saturday, December 10 from 10 AM until noon again at Christ the good Shepherd to design some fresh florals to take to an area nursing home. I will pass a sign-up sheet at our meetings or you can sign up by ing me at pamdube@sbcglobal.net. November Bus Trip SAFD Adult Senior Bus Trip Friday November 11, We will pass around a sign up sheet at the October 25, 2016 meeting at Cypress Creek Community Center. The Bus will leave the Barbara Bush parking lot at 8:30 am to arrive at NRG Center for the Christmas Nutcracker Market. Bus will return before 4:30 pm. Admission is $20.00 at the door. I can purchase the tickets early at Randall's for $18.00 if collected at sign up. There will also be a cost of $2.00 collected on the Bus. This pays for drivers attendance to show and/or lunch. 4 O c t ober 2016 S A F D F l o w e r P r e s s P a g e 4 COMMUNITY EVENT OUTREACH Our next community event outreach workshop will be to create 25 centerpieces for the Pearl Fincher Tea on November 3rd. The theme of this event is the aboriginal art of Australia. We will be combining the signature yellow rose of SAFD and Texas with some kangaroo paw as Texas meets Australia. I will give you details of when and where we will be working at the October meeting or you can contact me at pamdube@sbcglobal.net Sunshine **If you have not already done so, please pick up your membership cards and pay your dues at the next meeting. ** **SAFD is off to a great start this year! If I have not had the opportunity to meet you, let me introduce myself. My name is Kimberlyn Jackson and I am the Sunshine and Communications Chair. As part of my Sunshine duties, I send cards to our members in the event of an illness, surgery or the death of a family member. I also send notes of encouragement to our members who are dealing with a difficult situation. If you know of a member who needs a card, please let me know. Scholarship Points are earned throughout the year for your SAFD involvement. Community Affairs Workshop: Small Arrangements are made by YOU and delivered to nearby nursing homes/hospice, etc. Community Event Outreach Wk Shop: SAFD donates centerpieces to other non- profit organizations for their fundraiser. Hands- On Teaching Workshops are held 1-2 times per year, usually on our General Meeting Day and Time. For these workshops you must pre- pay for materials. Led by a professional, you make and then take home a beautiful floral arrangement. (Need more info? Just be sure to keep good records and copies of receipts for your CPA and your files. I will qualify this with be sure to check with your CPA if you have any questions. These could be subject to interpretation by your CPA and will depend on your filing status as to whether they qualify to be deducted.
